Yuro’s Toyota-cho notes

Eat and shop first, then sink into the bath.

Yuro Fujishiro sees Hotaru Kaido Nishinoichi as a place to relax before leaving inland Shimonoseki. The parking lot is broad and level, and the restrooms are easy to use. Start at the produce market to see Toyota pears and vegetables, decide whether to eat at Mansaku or Seseragi, and visit Hotaru no Yu if time permits. Knowing you can return here after a nearby outing gives your day some breathing room.

On a day exploring Toyota-cho, saving the hot spring for last can make the drive home feel much easier.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hotaru Kaido Nishinoichi is a roadside station with a hot spring on Prefectural Route 34 in Toyota-cho, Shimonoseki. Park in its spacious, level lot, browse Toyota-cho vegetables and fruit at Furusato Vegetable Market, then have kawara soba—noodles served on a heated roof tile—or a meal made with local ingredients at Restaurant Mansaku. If time allows, unwind at Nishinoichi Onsen’s Hotaru no Yu and Hotaru Sauna before driving on. The Toyota Firefly Village Museum is a short walk away, Minori no Oka about 10 minutes by car; early-summer firefly boat trips and pear and apple picking from summer into autumn offer a different, inland side of Shimonoseki from its strait and coast.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A deeper break with a hot spring and sauna

Nishinoichi Onsen’s Hotaru no Yu is listed as open 10:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:00. Its simple alkaline hot spring water has a pH of 9.3; there is an open-air bath, an approximately 50-tatami-mat post-bath lounge, and Hotaru Sauna. A tatami mat is a traditional Japanese floor mat used here as an area measure. This stop offers more than a meal and shopping.

02

Find Toyota-cho pears, vegetables, and honey in the market

Furusato Vegetable Market sells vegetables and fruit mainly from Toyota-cho. Look for Toyota pears from late summer through autumn, and, when in season, chestnuts and fruit from nearby areas. Even a brief stop can leave you with a taste of the region to take home.

03

Choose kawara soba, pear soft serve, or handmade bread

Head to Restaurant Mansaku for lunch, Cafe Seseragi for sweets, or Gesshodo for bread to take away. Pear soft serve and handmade bread give you options when the restaurant is busy or children need a quick bite.

04

Learn about fireflies on foot, then explore inland by car

The Toyota Firefly Village Museum is within walking distance of the station. By car, you can add June firefly boat trips, Toyota Lakeside Park, Minori no Oka, or Ichinomata Sakura Park. The station makes a base for experiencing Shimonoseki’s inland countryside as well as its coast.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Adults on a drive or the latter part of a long journey

Recharge with lunch and a hot spring before heading home

Once parked in the level lot, browse Furusato Vegetable Market and Gesshodo, then eat at Restaurant Mansaku. A soak at Hotaru no Yu after lunch can ease the fatigue of driving. The post-bath lounge also makes it easy to meet up with your companions.

Parking → produce and bread → Mansaku → Hotaru no Yu → post-bath lounge → depart

Last admission to the bath is 20:00. Restaurant, cafe, and bakery hours differ. Closures vary, generally centering on the fourth Tuesday.

Families with toddlers to elementary-school children; rainy or very hot days

Take a short family walk through the firefly town

Start at the Toyota Firefly Village Museum, a short walk from the station, to learn why Toyota-cho is known for fireflies. Spend about 30 minutes with younger children in the exhibits, then return for pear soft serve or bread. You can enjoy a daytime visit without timing your trip for a June evening.

Roadside station → firefly museum → Cafe Seseragi → produce market

The museum is generally closed on Mondays. Check annual notices for June evening openings and firefly boat trips.

A Toyota-cho drive planned around the season

Seek fireflies in early summer and fruit later in the year

In June, firefly boat trips or a walk along the Koya River can be the focus. From late August into autumn, Toyota pears and apple picking take over. Before or after those outings, the station brings meals, restrooms, shopping, and the hot spring together. Leave time to eat, shop, and rest so a seasonal activity does not dictate the whole itinerary.

Eat and check information at the station → firefly boat trip or fruit picking → Hotaru no Yu

Firefly appearances and pear, apple, and strawberry seasons and availability change. Check official and tourism association updates just before visiting.

Days when you want to see beyond coastal Shimonoseki

Explore inland Shimonoseki in half a day

Choose one of Toyota Lakeside Park, Minori no Oka, or Ichinomata Sakura Park, then combine it with a meal and bath at the station for a half-day outing. Decide whether you want lakeside scenery, a farming experience, or a submerged woodland rather than squeezing in all three.

Station → one nearby attraction → return for a bath or shopping

Conditions at inland attractions vary with season, weather, opening days, and reservations. In rain, focus on the station and museum.

A longer drive around Shimonoseki

Pause before or after Tsunoshima or Karato

The station’s official site also describes access toward Tsunoshima and Karato. Even on a coast-bound day, a stop for the hot spring and produce market in Toyota-cho changes the pace of the journey. Shop and eat lightly in the morning, or save the bath for late afternoon.

Central Shimonoseki or Ozuki IC → Hotaru Kaido Nishinoichi → Tsunoshima or Karato

Tsunoshima and Karato are some distance away. If you linger at the station, keep the next destination manageable.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short indoor break and a look around the market.

The level parking lot, restrooms, cafe, and post-bath lounge make breaks easier. Base any bath visit on your family’s health and schedule.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Pear soft serve, bread, and a brief museum visit fit well.

Add about 30 minutes at the firefly museum, then return to the car, instead of planning a long stay at the station alone.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Firefly exhibits, fair-style events, and sweets offer several things to enjoy.

Summer events and June firefly season can be busy; shift your parking and meal times if possible.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Fireflies, the museum, fruit picking, and the hot spring can all hold their interest.

Switch the focus with the season: fireflies in early summer, pears and apples from summer to autumn, or the museum on rainy days.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A practical stop for repeat hot spring visitors

Hotaru no Yu has a bath, sauna, post-bath lounge, amenities, and published prices. It works well as a bathing stop after a meal or before the drive home.

At busy lunchtime, keep the cafe and bakery in mind

Mansaku, Seseragi, and Gesshodo offer separate choices for lunch, sweets, and food to take away, useful when it is busy or a child needs a quick bite.

Toyota-cho vegetables and fruit anchor the shopping

Furusato Vegetable Market focuses on Toyota-cho produce. In pear season, shopping here pairs naturally with nearby pear picking.

Useful parking and restroom details

The listed facilities include 143 standard parking spaces, five large-vehicle spaces, six spaces for disabled visitors, and two wheelchair-accessible restrooms, helping you plan a longer drive or a visit with older companions.

The nearby firefly museum helps on rainy family days

The Toyota Firefly Village Museum is within walking distance and covers natural history outside firefly season too. It makes an easy daytime family stop, without depending on June evening viewing.

Fireflies and fruit picking change the seasonal itinerary

Nearby outings include firefly boat trips, pear, strawberry and apple picking, and Minori no Oka. Check annual event details when planning around a particular season.

Summer vacation events can extend a family visit

Official notices listed the Nishinoichi Summer Fair and Summer Character Hunt in July 2026. Look for current events in the official updates when planning a future visit.

Before your visit

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

The main lunch choice

Kawara soba and set meals with local ingredients at Restaurant Mansaku

For a substantial Yamaguchi-style meal. Allow extra time at the lunch peak or when groups are visiting.

A sweet stop

Toyota pear soft serve / pear cider float / seasonal ice cream

A quick way to sample this station’s flavors, and an easy change of pace with children.

Light food to take away

Gesshodo handmade bread / savory bread / Shimonoseki-style prepared foods

For before or after the bath, or to take on the next drive. The menu changes seasonally, so choose at the counter.

Buy at the produce market

Toyota-cho vegetables and fruit / Toyota pears / chestnuts / honey

Bring home something in season. Selection depends on harvest and deliveries, so an earlier visit may offer more choice.

Adjust when it is busy

Browse produce and bread first; eat at a different time

At midday on holidays, keep the cafe or bakery as another option if the restaurant is busy.
