Arima’s rest-stop notes

Slow down to see more of Sasanami.

Arima sees this station as a place to catch your breath in the mountains along National Route 262, rather than a large attraction. Pause at the parking area and restrooms, look for Sasanami tofu or another handmade item, then walk to the nearby post town if time allows. Linking a meal, shopping and a short walk makes the journey toward Hagi more than a drive through.

This is a place to take one piece of Sasanami with you before moving on, not a stop measured by how long you stay.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Asahi (道の駅 あさひ; address: 萩市佐々並2476-1) is a roadside station in the Sasanami mountains along National Route 262 between central Yamaguchi and central Hagi. Browse Sasanami tofu, local vegetables, handmade boxed lunches, mochi rice cakes, miso and yuzu citrus products; on suitable days, have lunch at Yamaguchi Aged Karaage Specialty Shop Sunrise. Sasanami-ichi’s historic streets and the former Kobayashi residence are within walking distance, so a brief restroom stop can grow into a walk along the Hagi Okan historic road.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Reset your journey midway between Yamaguchi and Hagi

While driving the mountain stretch of National Route 262, you can combine parking, a restroom stop, shopping and lunch. This is a small station with space for 20 standard cars and three large vehicles; it works well as a place to regroup before continuing.

02

Remember the stop through Sasanami tofu and local handiwork

Sasanami tofu, local vegetables, handmade boxed lunches, mochi rice cakes, pickles, miso and yuzu miso reflect life in this mountain area. Even without eating at the restaurant, choosing one local item makes the Sasanami stop memorable.

03

Walk a little of the Hagi Okan in nearby Sasanami-ichi

About five minutes away on foot, Sasanami-ichi is a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings that flourished as a post town on the Hagi Okan road. Add the former Kobayashi residence for a short historic walk.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive from the Yamaguchi side toward central Hagi

Refresh before heading into Hagi

National Route 262 runs through mountain country. A restroom stop, drink and small purchase here make the approach to central Hagi easier. If restaurant hours do not fit, choose a boxed lunch, mochi or packaged local food instead.

Park → restrooms → shop → National Route 262 toward central Hagi.

Shop hours are approximately 9:00–16:30. For a late afternoon arrival, do not count on using the shop.

A day when you want to eat and shop in a short stop

Make lunch of Sasanami tofu and karaage

If your timing fits lunch, consider the restaurant’s chicken nanban set meal—fried chicken with a sweet and sour sauce—or a light meal, then browse Sasanami tofu and handmade foods in the shop. At this small station, switching to takeaway when the restaurant is busy can keep your itinerary on track.

Shop → restaurant or takeaway → rest → depart.

The restaurant is closed Mondays. Stock varies by season and time of day.

A day with 30–60 minutes to spare

Add a post town five minutes away on foot

Walk through Sasanami-ichi’s streets to the former Kobayashi residence to experience a midway stop on the Hagi Okan. Red roof tiles and rural scenery turn a driving break into a short stroll.

Station → Sasanami-ichi → former Kobayashi residence → return to station.

The former Kobayashi residence is closed Wednesdays. Keep the walk shorter in heat or rain.

Families with children or an outdoor-focused day

Add outdoor activities for a half day

Hagi Activity Park, about five minutes away by car, has a campsite and Natura Circuit for a half-day detour. The station is a convenient place to pick up food and drinks before going.

Station → Hagi Activity Park → back to National Route 262.

The campsite operates from April through October and is closed Tuesdays. The circuit is closed Tuesdays except when Tuesday is a public holiday.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Useful for a short restroom stop and shopping.

Because the station is small, a brief use of parking, restrooms and the shop may be easier than planning for nursing or a long stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Keep meals and walking in short segments.

If you add a town walk, stick to the former Kobayashi residence or nearby streets rather than covering too much distance, so it is easy to return.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A walk in Sasanami-ichi or a visit to the activity park adds variety.

The station itself suits a break more than a long play session. Choose one outdoor activity for the rest of the visit.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

The Hagi Okan, post town and karting make good topics.

Pairing Sasanami-ichi’s streets with Natura Circuit can turn a driving break into a little learning and play.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Treat it as a small station for a satisfying stop

Visitor comments tend to describe a rest stop with convenience-store functions rather than a large roadside station. It suits a quick restroom visit, a drink and a look at local products.

Adjust lunch to the time and day

The restaurant is open approximately 11:00–15:00 and closed Mondays. If that does not fit, choose a boxed lunch or something small from the shop without disrupting your itinerary.

A nearby walk changes the feel of the station

Sasanami-ichi and the former Kobayashi residence show why this midway point between Yamaguchi and Hagi matters. Allow about 10 minutes for a simple break or 30–60 minutes with a town walk.

Fresh greenery, autumn color and summer events change the visit

Fuchigahira Falls has fresh greenery and autumn foliage; Hagi Activity Park offers outdoor activities from spring through autumn; parking-area events change crowd levels on the day.

Watch your arrival time in the evening

Shop hours changed to 9:00–16:30 in August 2024. If stopping on the way back from central Hagi, plan your shop visit with closing time in mind.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The shop is generally open 9:00–16:30; plan a late afternoon stop mainly around the restroom.
  • The restaurant is generally open 11:00–15:00 and closed Mondays; account for this when planning lunch.
  • At this small station, if it is busy, consider the restaurant first, then boxed lunches, mochi or drinks.
  • For a walk to Sasanami-ichi, check the weather and remember that the former Kobayashi residence is closed Wednesdays.
  • If adding Hagi Activity Park, check the campsite’s April–October season and Tuesday closure; the circuit opens on public-holiday Tuesdays.
  • When an event takes place in the station parking area, a visit for the local event may work better than a quick rest stop.
