How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing on arrival
Check each facility's closing time

The farm market and bakery close earlier; the hot spring and restaurant are easier to use later in the day.

For lunch
Head to Irori Restaurant

There are separate lunch and dinner services. If you are also bathing, plan backward from the restaurant's service hours.

For things to take home
Ohayo Market and the shop

If you want freshly harvested vegetables and locally processed foods, arrive before the selection thins later in the day.

To rest your body
Hot spring and sauna

Allowing some time before the return drive, rather than squeezing in a brief stop during a long journey, makes the most of this station.

Traveling with a dog
Consider the dog run and RV park area

The dog run is free and open 9:00–17:00. Dogs must have received a combination vaccine covering at least five diseases within the past year.

For an extra nature stop
Go to Kannose Gorge

Drive farther into the hills for the river and forest. Check weather and road conditions and leave room to change plans.

Keiko's route

A calm visit starts with the facilities that close earliest

Keiko Takano's guide begins with parking, toilets and a look at opening hours. At Forest Kimita, the farm market, bakery, shop, restaurant and hot spring all keep different hours. Shop first and rest later to enjoy Kimita without rushing.

1

Morning to lunchtime

Visit Ohayo Market and Mori no Bakery first. The selection of farm products and bread changes as the day goes on.

2

Lunchtime to late afternoon

Eat at Irori and look for souvenirs in the shop. Choose whether to dine before bathing or unwind briefly afterward.

3

Late afternoon onward

Rest in the hot spring and sauna. In the evening, check last orders and last admission before setting off.

4

For a half-day visit

Add Kannose Gorge or a summer event to turn a rest stop into a trip through Kimita's natural scenery.

Highlights

Forest Kimita is a roadside station centered on Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi, renewed in 2024. Browse vegetables and local products at Ohayo Market in the morning, then eat at Irori or Mori no Bakery. After a stiffening drive, choose the hot spring and sauna; with a dog, consider the dog run; on an RV trip, the RV park. This is a place to plan a calm sequence of eating, shopping and resting around each facility's different hours, rather than rushing through a large souvenir hall.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The heart of the station is a hot spring inn you can drop into

How you use Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi shapes the visit more than a quick look around the shops. Day-use bathing, sauna, dining, the shop, lodging and the RV park share the site, allowing anything from a short break while driving to an overnight stay in the countryside.

02

Plan eating and shopping by time of day

From morning into afternoon, visit Ohayo Market and Mori no Bakery; at lunch or in the evening, head to Irori Restaurant; before leaving, consider the shop and hot spring. Closing times differ, so buying bread and farm products first and leaving bathing and a meal until later makes the visit easier.

03

Close to Kuchiwa Interchange, yet deep in the countryside

About five minutes by car from Kuchiwa Interchange on the Onomichi–Matsue Expressway, the station is close to the highway but surrounded by Kimita's rivers and woods. Add Kannose Gorge or the summer Sunflower Festival for a short trip into northern Miyoshi's natural scenery.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Returning from a drive around Miyoshi or Shobara

Finish an Onomichi–Matsue Expressway drive with a hot spring

The station's proximity to Kuchiwa Interchange makes it easy to visit before or after returning to the expressway. For a meal, choose Irori; for a longer rest, add the hot spring and sauna before driving on.

From Kuchiwa Interchange or the Miyoshi Interchange area, take Prefectural Route 39. Once parked, use the hot spring building as your main reference point.

Day-use bathing has a last admission time and dining has last orders, so allow enough time if arriving in the evening.

Shopping, a light lunch break, or bringing food home

From morning to lunch, visit the farm market and bakery first

Ohayo Market opens at around 8:30 and Mori no Bakery at around 9:00. Browse vegetables, processed foods and bread before going for a bath or meal to avoid missing the shopping hours.

Ohayo Market → Mori no Bakery → shop or Irori Restaurant.

The choice of farm products and bread may shrink late in the afternoon.

Driving with a dog, traveling by campervan, or avoiding a late-night drive

With a dog or an RV, plan around the RV park area

The hot spring, RV park and dog run make a longer stay possible. If traveling with a dog, plan where it will stay while you bathe; for an RV stay, decide check-in timing and electricity needs in advance.

Parking → dog run / RV park → hot spring and shop.

Check weather and heat for the dog run, and reservation availability and conditions for the RV park.

A short walk on a fine day and an adult trip among rivers and woods

For nature, extend the visit to Kannose Gorge for half a day

A meal and bath at the station can fill the visit, but with more time, Kannose Gorge offers a stronger sense of Kimita's natural setting. The gorge, waterfalls and trails feel different in changing weather, so leave the schedule loose.

Forest Kimita → Kannose Gorge Prefectural Natural Park.

On mountain roads, watch for surfaces after rain or in winter. If walking, consider footwear and sunset time.

A family drive in late July or a local event day

In summer, combine the river and Sunflower Festival

At Kimita's summer event, the Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi venue is one center for food stalls and activities such as catching ayu, a river fish. It is busier than usual, but the hot spring and restaurant can round out the day.

Use the Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi venue as a base, then visit the Hitsuta and Ishihara venues.

Allow for parking and dining waits on event days rather than trying to cover everything in a short visit.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

The hot spring and dining are mainly a break for adults

This is not a station for a long walk around. Keep the stop short while checking the day's information on nursing, diaper changing and whether infants may bathe.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Keep dog-run visits and outdoor movement short

This station is not centered on playground equipment. Bread, the farm market or an event day can help keep young children engaged.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The hot spring, bread and summer events combine well

Seasonal events such as ayu catching can appeal to this age, but plan for crowds and a break from the heat.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Easy to add Kannose Gorge or the museum

Combine the station with a gorge walk or local event for learning and outdoor activity beyond the station grounds.

Toilets

Check the distance from your parking space to the hot spring building and toilets.

Food

If a child needs a light bite, visit the bakery early.

Outdoors

Better for a brief change of scene or nature walk than a playground visit.

Rainy day

Stay on the station grounds in rain; skipping a gorge walk may be more comfortable.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Choose parking after locating the hot spring building and toilets

Destinations are spread across the grounds. Parking near your main stop, whether bathing or farm shopping, can reduce walking.

  2. 2
    Shop first, bathe later

Use the farm market and bakery earlier, then finish with a hot spring break.

  3. 3
Take it easy on a gorge day

Kannose Gorge is attractive, but footing and weather can make the outing more demanding. A day spent resting at the station is worthwhile too.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

After the 2024 renewal, think of this as a hot spring complex

Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi now sits at the center of a visit designed for longer stays. The hot spring, sauna, dining, lodging, RV park and dog run together make a varied rest stop.

Visit the bakery and farm market early; leave the hot spring for later

Visitor accounts often describe browsing Ohayo Market and the bakery early. If arriving late in the afternoon, planning around bathing and dining may work better than relying on a particular purchase.

Check the distance between the toilet building and hot spring building when parking

Road-trip accounts say the 24-hour toilets are on the opposite side from the hot spring building. For overnight or early-morning breaks, or with children, locate the toilets and your destination before parking.

The dog run can make a visit with a dog easier

Official and RV park information shows how to reach the dog run. Plan where your dog will wait while you bathe, and keep outdoor time short on hot days.

Let the weather decide whether to add a nature stop

Kannose Gorge has a gorge, waterfalls and trails, but footing after rain and road surfaces in winter need care. Decide whether to stay for bathing and dining or continue to the gorge according to conditions.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • About five minutes by car from Kuchiwa Interchange and 25 minutes from Miyoshi Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway, making this a convenient break before or after highway driving.
  • Facility hours differ. Visit Ohayo Market and Mori no Bakery earlier; bathing and dining are easier to fit later.
  • Closure information differs among sources. The current official site lists Tuesdays as the regular closed day, so check it for your visit date.
  • Parking is free. The Kimita Onsen Mori no Izumi official site lists 54 free parking spaces and its RV park page lists 10 RV spaces; tourism information lists 150 parking spaces, while roadside-station information lists 115 standard and three large-vehicle spaces. Published figures differ, so allow extra time on busy days.
  • There are 24-hour toilets. Check the locations of the hot spring building, farm market and toilet building when parking, especially with children or for an overnight break.
  • The RV park and dog run make the station useful for road trips with dogs. Check official notices for booking and use conditions.
  • For a Kannose Gorge trip, consider footing after rain, winter road surfaces and sunset time, leaving the option of a hot spring break at the station instead.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

For a full meal

Irori Restaurant

The main choice for a meal using local ingredients alongside a hot spring visit. Separate lunch and dinner services allow dining before or after bathing.

Once last orders have passed, options narrow quickly; arrive early for dinner.

For something light

Mori no Bakery

Buy bread for a light meal in the car or rest area. Even a short stop without bathing offers a taste of Kimita.

The bakery generally closes at 15:00. If arriving later, consider the shop or Irori instead.

To take food home

Ohayo Market / shop

Look for freshly harvested vegetables, locally processed foods and souvenirs. Even if you came for a meal, visiting the farm market first adds something to take home.

Farm products vary by season and time of day; choose from what is available.

After the hot spring

Shop / rest lounge

Drink some water after bathing, then browse the shop before leaving. A little time seated before driving helps on a long trip.

Some areas, including guest-only spaces, have separate access rules; day visitors should follow signs on site.

Eating on an event day

Venue food / ayu catching

At local events such as the River and Sunflower Festival, venue food joins the regular facilities as a highlight. For children, allow separate time for eating and activities such as catching ayu river fish.

Event-only offerings vary with weather and organizer notices; check the official event page.
