Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

When you arrive
Use the toilets and shop to decide how long to stay

For a short stop, try the shop and outdoor shop; for lunch, head to the restaurant. The station is close to Nishiawakura IC, leaving room in your schedule for the next destination.

If you are hungry
Visit the restaurant during the 11 o’clock hour

The restaurant is open until about 15:00, with last orders around 14:30. Do not leave a planned lunch too late.

If you are shopping to take things home
Compare Okayama and Tottori souvenirs with local vegetables

The range of souvenirs reflects the border location. Fresh produce and handmade foods vary with the time of day.

With children
Stretch your legs on the wooden walkway

This is not a stop built around large playground equipment, but stepping out beside the river before or after a meal offers a welcome break from the car.

If you want to add a hot spring
Go to Koganeizumi or Motoyu

Both are within roughly a five-minute drive of the station. After food and shopping, a day-use hot spring can round out a half-day outing.

For a seasonal outing
Moss phlox in spring; Wakasugi Natural Forest in autumn

Before heading into the mountains, check the weather, snow, and parking conditions, and get drinks and use the toilets at the station.

Highlights

Awakurando is a roadside station beside National Route 373 and the Nishiawakura IC on the Tottori Expressway, useful both as a destination and a stop along the way. The shop offers souvenirs from the Okayama and Tottori areas, vegetables direct from producers, and handmade processed foods; the restaurant serves dishes using Daisen jidori chicken and regional ingredients. After eating, you can ease the strain of driving with a walk along the wooden riverside walkway beside the Yoshino River or a pause on the pinwheel deck. It is a place to regain time and energy before heading into Tottori, visiting a hot spring, or setting out for spring moss phlox or the Wakasugi Natural Forest.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Get your bearings just off the interchange

The station is close to Nishiawakura IC, making it convenient before crossing into Tottori or returning to northern Okayama. Parking, toilets, shops, and dining are easy to locate, whether you plan a long stop or a quick one. It is a useful place for drivers to pause and reset.

02

Shop near the Okayama–Tottori border

Alongside well-known Okayama sweets, the shop stocks souvenirs from the Sanin side, locally handmade processed foods, and vegetables direct from producers. On a drive crossing prefectural borders, the range makes it easier to choose gifts from either side. Even without a meal, there is plenty to browse and take home.

03

Make the riverside wooden walkway part of your break

Nishiawakura Village’s visitor information highlights the wooden walkway overlooking the clear Yoshino River. A short walk after eating and a photo on the pinwheel deck can make the stop feel like a visit to this mountain village. That little time outdoors is especially welcome with young children or during a long drive.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Drives using National Route 373 or the Tottori Expressway

Lunch before heading to Tottori

Just beside Nishiawakura IC, the station is convenient for lunch and a toilet break before driving toward Tottori City. Look for Daisen jidori chicken dishes and menus using regional ingredients, then choose souvenirs in the shop. A pause here can make the border-crossing drive more comfortable.

Nishiawakura IC → Awakurando → toward Tottori.

The restaurant mainly serves lunch. If you arrive late, leave room to switch to snacks or the shop.

Days when you want to ease driving fatigue; a leisurely adults-only trip

Make a half-day break with a hot spring

After eating and shopping at the station, continue to Yutopia Koganeizumi or Awakura Onsen Motoyu for a half-day break instead of simply passing through. Both are a short drive away, so you can decide according to how tired your companions feel. Onsen are Japanese hot-spring baths.

Awakurando → Yutopia Koganeizumi / Awakura Onsen Motoyu.

The hot springs have closing days and last-admission times; check their official information before going.

Flower drives from late April to early May

Use the station as a base for a spring moss-phlox drive

On a visit to Ogaya Moss Phlox Park, use Awakurando as a starting point for toilets, drinks, and a light meal. Peak flowering changes from year to year, and temperatures change as you head into the mountains. Resting at the station first makes the route easier to plan with children.

Awakurando → Ogaya Moss Phlox Park → BASE101%.

Follow current seasonal information for the park’s opening period and parking arrangements, and allow extra time on busy days.

Days when you want little outdoor walking, including trips with children or older companions

On a rainy day, focus on shopping and a hot spring

Rather than walking the wooden walkway for long in the rain, choose Okayama and Tottori souvenirs in the shop, eat at the restaurant or outdoor shop, and move on to a hot spring. When mountain weather is uncertain, a visit to Awakurando and an onsen can be satisfying without pushing on to Wakasugi Natural Forest or the moss phlox.

Awakurando → Yutopia Koganeizumi / Awakura Onsen Motoyu.

Keep the outing short while checking the footing on the walkway and in the car park, plus the hot spring’s closing day and last-admission time.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Eat a full meal

Daisen jidori chicken cutlet set meal / dishes with regional ingredients

A good lunch before heading toward Tottori. At the meeting point of Sanyo and Sanin, it is easy to choose a meal that makes the border drive memorable. Daisen jidori is chicken from the Daisen area.

Restaurant hours are approximately 11:00–15:00. Allow for the lunch rush or sold-out dishes, and switch to a snack if arriving late.

Have something light

Milk stand / hot snacks / outdoor shop

Useful when there is little time for a meal or a child wants just a small bite. The lighter option helps during a long drive.

The outdoor shop is generally open 10:00–17:00, but follow the day’s posted operating information.

Shop to take things home

Well-known Okayama sweets / Sanin souvenirs / handmade processed foods / vegetables direct from producers

Seeing souvenirs from the Tottori side as well as Okayama is characteristic of this border station. Pick up vegetables for home alongside travel gifts.

Fresh and handmade products vary with delivery times and the season; choices may be fewer in the evening.

Explore nearby food

Game-meat lunch at BASE101% / strawberry sweets

After a light stop at the station, drive about three minutes to BASE101% for another taste of Nishiawakura’s forest foods and strawberries.

BASE101% has closing days, including Tuesdays. Check the season and reservations for strawberry picking.

Look for seasonal products

Vegetables direct from producers / strawberry products / seasonal limited menus

In spring, combine strawberries and a moss-phlox drive; in autumn, pair a mountain walk with browsing seasonal products in the shop. Arrive earlier if you have a particular item in mind.

Seasonal products depend on deliveries, weather, and events. Follow the official Instagram account and information posted at the shop.
