Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Goise Nima is opposite the Nima–Iwami Ginzan interchange on the San-in Expressway, a handy place to prepare for sightseeing in Oda. The restaurant features dishes made with Oda’s large conger eel, nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) and local vegetables. The shop sells San-in fish cakes, rice, junmai sake, crafts and fresh fish from the local one-day fishing trade. With 24-hour toilets and rest and information space, a tourist information desk, children’s toilets, a nursing room, a natural-grass dog run and an RV park, you can eat, shop, rest and ask for travel advice before or after Iwami Ginzan or Kotogahama Beach. The event building also hosts Iwami Kagura, a local theatrical dance tradition, and markets. Editor Keiko Wakamiya sees this as a place to put a little of Oda and some breathing room into the car before reaching the main destination.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Rest and seek travel advice opposite the interchange

The official access guide places the station right beside the Nima–Iwami Ginzan interchange. A tourist information desk, 24-hour rest and information space, and public toilets make it useful before heading toward Iwami Ginzan or Nima.

02

Oda flavors: large conger eel, nodoguro and fresh one-day-catch fish

The restaurant features Oda’s large conger eel, nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) and local vegetables. The shop carries fresh fish from one-day fishing trips, San-in fish cakes, rice, junmai sake and crafts.

03

Rest options for children, dogs and overnight RV travelers

Children’s toilets, a nursing room, natural-grass dog run, RV park and EV charging facilities offer options while companions wait for food or take a break on a long drive.

04

On Iwami Kagura and market days, the station becomes a destination

The covered event building and lively plaza host vendors, markets, festivals and stage programs listed on the official schedule. Allow extra time for parking and food on event days.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Before a World Heritage walk

Get ready for Iwami Ginzan with a toilet stop and lunch

Stop just after the Nima–Iwami Ginzan interchange for toilets, tourist advice, lunch and drinks. At Iwami Ginzan, walking distances and park-and-ride choices matter, so agree on your group’s time and energy here.

Interchange → Goise Nima → Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center → Omori townscape.

Check how cars may enter the Iwami Ginzan townscape area, plus parking and bus times.

A half day with children or after rain

Enjoy Nima’s sand theme at the museum and Kotogahama

After a snack or shopping at the station, see one of the world’s largest one-year hourglasses and try glass crafts at Nima Sand Museum. If the weather clears, try the singing sand at Kotogahama. The indoor and seaside stops are easy to swap when weather is uncertain.

Goise Nima → Nima Sand Museum → Kotogahama → return to the station to shop.

At Kotogahama, check wind, waves, whether the sand will sound and summer swimming facilities on site.

A weekend detour

Enjoy Iwami Kagura and stalls on an event day

When the official schedule lists stage shows, markets and vendors, make the station a destination. The covered event building and lively plaza add local culture between shopping and a meal.

Check the official schedule → park → stage and stalls → restaurant or cafe → shop.

Parking and food can be busy on event days. Leave room to switch from the restaurant to the cafe or shops.

A drive with a dog

Let the dog unwind before heading to the coast

Let your dog reset at the natural-grass dog run while you use the toilets and shop. It makes for a calmer car before continuing to Kotogahama or Yunotsu.

Park → dog run → cafe or shop → Kotogahama or Yunotsu area.

Check dog-run rules, heat and wet ground after rain; keep the stop short when needed.

An adult road trip

Finish the afternoon slowly at Yunotsu Onsen

Pick up Oda souvenirs and a snack at the station, then head to Yunotsu Onsen for a soak. It also makes a restful ending after walking around Iwami Ginzan.

Goise Nima → Iwami Ginzan or Kotogahama → Yunotsu Onsen.

Bathing facilities have different hours and closing days. Check the last admission time before setting off in the evening.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

A nursing room, diaper-changing facilities and 24-hour toilets suit a short break before or after Iwami Ginzan.

Avoid the meal rush; one adult can handle information and shopping first.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Children’s toilets and cafe snacks help. The large conger eel monument and plaza offer a quick change of scene.

The dog run is for dogs. Use the plaza or nearby Kotogahama for children’s outdoor play.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Pair the station with Nima Sand Museum, Kotogahama or an Iwami Kagura event for a fuller outing.

Choose hourglass and glass-craft activities in rain, and Kotogahama in clear weather.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Connect Iwami Ginzan history, the hourglass, singing sand and one-day-catch fish for a local learning trip.

Iwami Ginzan involves more walking; prepare drinks and use the toilets at the station first.

Nursing and diaper changes

Shimane Tourism Navi and the official facilities guide list a nursing room, diaper changing and children’s toilets.

Waiting for a meal

If the restaurant is busy, briefly try the cafe, shop or monument area.

Rainy day

Combine the station shop with Nima Sand Museum, leaving Kotogahama until the weather improves.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
After the interchange, rest at the station first

Directly opposite the Nima–Iwami Ginzan interchange, it is a convenient stop after a mountain drive. Use the toilets, rest and information area, and tourist desk first.

  2. 2
Avoid Tuesdays and the lunch rush for a meal

The restaurant is listed as closed Tuesdays. Check the current official notice if lunch is your aim; on busy days, switch to cafe or shop snacks.

  3. 3
Choose a manageable walking distance at Iwami Ginzan

Consider parking at the World Heritage Center, local buses, the townscape walk and the distance to Ryugenji Mabu mine tunnel rather than trying to walk everything.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Covered event building

A venue for local culture on stage, including regular Iwami Kagura performances.

Large conger eel monument

An easy-to-spot photo landmark and meeting point for children or companions.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The interchange location helps before or after Iwami Ginzan

Official directions place the station just beside the Nima–Iwami Ginzan interchange. Travel reviews also describe driving over from Iwami Ginzan. It works well for gathering toilets, food, drinks and tourist information before entering the World Heritage area.

Come for seafood, but check Tuesday closure and hours

The official facilities guide features large conger eel, nodoguro and local vegetables. Tourism listings differ on the restaurant’s closing time, so check the official site or social media for lunch and keep a snack option for a late meal.

Buy one-day-catch fish when you find it

The official guide lists fresh fish from Oda’s uncommon one-day fishing method, in which boats return with their catch the same day. Selection depends on landings and time of day; plan chilled storage and your trip home.

Combine family facilities with a nearby indoor stop

Children’s toilets, a nursing room and diaper changing are available, and Nima Sand Museum is nearby. Younger children can reset at the station; older children can explore the hourglass, singing sand and Iwami Ginzan history.

The dog run and RV park broaden the ways to stop

The natural-grass dog run separates small dogs from medium and large dogs. The RV park requires a reservation and lists electricity and rubbish disposal. They make the station useful for dog owners and overnight vehicle travelers.

Have another food option on event days

The official schedule lists bagel vendors, a fish-cake shop, markets and festivals. At busy weekend lunches, consider an in-store stall or plaza vendor as well as the restaurant.

Prepare for winter mountain roads before reaching the station

Official directions warn of snow and ice when crossing the Chugoku Mountains from the Sanyo side and advise winter tires or chains. Check conditions en route as well as at Iwami Ginzan or Sanbe.

Kotogahama shines on a clear beach day

The Oda City tourism site describes its singing sand, selection among Japan’s 100 soundscapes and 100 beaches, and summer swimming facilities. After rain or in strong wind, visit Nima Sand Museum first and assess the beach later.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Large conger eel / nodoguro / local vegetables

A regional meal before or after Iwami Ginzan or Nima sightseeing. Check restaurant hours and sellouts if seafood is your priority.

From October 1 the restaurant reopened as “Iwami no Daidokoro”; the official site lists it as 11:00–16:00, last order 15:00, with no regular closing day. The conger eel tempura bowl is limited to 30 per day, so expect it may sell out later in the day.

Light bite

Cafe drinks / soft serve / popcorn

A short driving break without sitting down in the restaurant, useful with children or before Iwami Ginzan.

Cafe hours may change with weather and circumstances; do not count on a late stop.

Fresh fish

Fresh one-day-catch fish

Bring Oda’s seafood home. The catch varies, so consider your itinerary and a cool bag when choosing fish.

Bring a cool bag for a long drive, and expect a smaller selection later in the day.

Souvenirs

San-in fish cakes / rice / junmai sake / crafts

Choose practical gifts, items to share and keepsakes separately. The station is easy to revisit after Iwami Ginzan or Yunotsu.

Drivers should take care with alcohol; pack fragile crafts with your luggage in mind.

Event day

Food stalls / fish-cake shop tempura / market / antiques fair

On scheduled vendor days, outdoor snacks add to the regular shop and offer another option at a busy lunch hour.

Vendors appear only on specified dates; check the official schedule and social media for rain cancellations or sellouts.
