How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, take a break
24-hour information corner and large parking area

This Route 9 stop works for travel from either Masuda or Tsuwano. Late at night or early in the morning, plan on a toilet and information break rather than shops being open.

For a meal
Ramen, udon, and rice bowls at the food court

From November 21, 2025, weekday food court hours are shortened to 15:00. A late lunch is easy to miss except on weekends and public holidays, so check the time.

For shopping
Local produce shop and vegetables

Look for vegetables and wild mountain vegetables grown in Tsuwano, plus specialties from the town and nearby areas. This is also handy for shopping after time by the river or on the way home.

Step outside
Takatsu River riverside park

Summer brings river play and ayu fishing, while winter brings birdwatching. Check the weather and water level near the river; a short walk is a good place to start.

If you have time
Ground golf and showers

Play a little ground golf on site; showers are another option after river play or around a camping trip. Follow the day's guidance for registration and hours of use.

Toma's break notes

This is a stop where I would look at the riverside before setting off again.

From Toma Hayase's perspective, Silkway Nichihara is useful for more than a single specialty: it is easy to plan the time from parking to departure. Visit the toilets, food court, produce shop, and convenience store, then head behind the station to the Takatsu River if time allows. Knowing that the food court closes early on weekdays and that weather changes how you can use the riverside makes a Route 9 break more relaxed.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Silkway Nichihara sits between National Route 9 and the Takatsu River in the Nichihara area of Tsuwano Town. This roadside station has a local produce shop, food court, Yamazaki Shop, and a 24-hour information corner, plus a riverside park, lawn, ground golf course, and showers behind the building. You can do more than stop for a toilet break: combine lunch, shopping for local vegetables and specialties, and a riverside walk. It is a convenient place to pause while traveling between Masuda and Tsuwano's historic town center.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Extend a Route 9 break to the riverside

Silkway Nichihara may look like a roadside stop to pass through, but behind it is a park beside the Takatsu River. It is useful even when you only need a toilet, drink, or lunch. Spend ten minutes by the river and you get a sense of the water and mountains around Tsuwano's Nichihara area.

02

Everyday choices for food and shopping

The food court offers ramen, udon, soba, rice bowls, and curry, making it easier for a family with different tastes to eat together. The local produce shop has vegetables and specialties, and there is also a Yamazaki Shop. It works for practical supplies as well as a sightseeing stop.

03

River play, ground golf, and the observatory area

Ground golf on the station grounds can turn a brief stop into a longer visit. Head onward to Nichihara Observatory or Makuraseyama Campground and a daytime break can lead into an evening under the stars. This is also a starting point for enjoying nature in the Takatsu River basin beyond Tsuwano's historic town center.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Route 9 drives and a meal before walking through Tsuwano's historic town center

Lunch break en route from Masuda to Tsuwano

If you have driven from Masuda, stop at the parking area and toilets first, then choose ramen or udon at the food court around lunchtime. Browse the local produce shop after eating before heading to central Tsuwano, so you can start walking soon after arrival.

Parking → toilets → food court → local produce shop → toward Tsuwano.

The food court is generally open until 15:00 on weekdays. If lunch will be late, check its current hours first.

Families with children, people with dogs, and a break from long-distance driving

A quick riverside change of pace

Even without a long shopping or meal stop, stepping into the park behind the station changes the feel of the break. If you go down toward the water, watch your footing and the water level. Starting with the lawn or a walk along the river keeps the visit simple.

Toilets → buy a drink → riverside park and lawn → depart.

Summer river conditions vary with weather, water level, and current. Keep small children back from the water's edge, and have spare clothes and towels in the car.

Before camping, before heading into the mountains, or for supplies on the way home

Shop and pick up convenience-store supplies first

Browse local vegetables and specialties at the produce shop, then pick up any missing drinks or daily necessities at Yamazaki Shop. Before heading to a nearby campground or Nichihara Observatory, it helps to shop separately for food and practical supplies.

Local produce shop → Yamazaki Shop → organize the car → toward Makuraseyama.

The local produce shop and Yamazaki Shop are generally open 9:00–18:00. If stopping before evening stargazing, finish shopping early.

Three-generation groups, older companions, or some activity after lunch

Stay longer for ground golf

The Tsuwano Town ground golf course on the station grounds adds outdoor activity to a food and shopping stop. Registration information is near the local produce shop register; check registration, fees, and possible weather closures before playing. Ground golf is a Japanese club-and-ball game played on a course, usually without a conventional golf hole.

Check registration → ground golf → food court or local produce shop.

Listed closing times are 18:00 from April through September and 17:00 from October through March. The course closes December 31 and January 1 and may also close in severe weather.

Stargazing, camping, and a longer experience of Tsuwano's natural surroundings

Continue toward Nichihara Observatory and Makuraseyama in the evening

Eat and shop at the roadside station during the day, then head to Nichihara Observatory or Makuraseyama Campground in the evening. This takes you from a riverside break into the mountains at night. For stargazing, check the observatory's opening days and the weather beforehand.

Roadside station → Makuraseyama Campground or Nichihara Observatory → return journey.

The observatory is listed as closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and observation depends on clear skies. Check your route and finish shopping in daylight before driving at night.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for toilets, diaper changes, and brief shopping.

A diaper-changing space and multipurpose toilet are listed. Planning feeding and rest may be easier than a long visit by the river or to the ground golf course.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

The lawn and riverside walk can suit this age, but take care at the water's edge.

The riverside park is appealing, but the current and water level change the risks. A little time moving around the lawn before or after a meal is a gentler start.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Easy to combine the riverside, noodles, and a short spell outdoors.

Noodles and children's curry are among the meal choices, and the river offers a change of scene. In summer, decide where spare clothes, towels, and wet shoes will go before getting back into the car.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

The Takatsu River, ground golf, and observatory offer plenty to explore.

River water quality, ayu sweetfish, birds, and the stars all offer nature topics for this age. If continuing to Nichihara Observatory or Makuraseyama, plan around the weather and opening days.

Diaper changes

Shimane Tourism Navi lists a diaper-changing space, multipurpose toilet, and ostomate facilities.

Playing by the water

The riverside park is appealing, but adapt your plans to the weather, water level, and current. The lawn is a safer focus for small children.

Meals

Ramen, udon, soba, rice bowls, and curry make it easier to find something familiar for children.

Spare clothes

For a riverside visit, keeping towels, spare shoes, and a bag for wet things in the car makes onward travel easier. Showers are listed as open 9:00–19:00 at ¥100 for ten minutes.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Ground golf course

An on-site facility with three courses and 24 holes. It hosts regular tournaments and local use, and may close because of weather or maintenance.

Riverside park and lawn

Summer river play, canoeing and ayu fishing, and winter birdwatching offer different ways to enjoy the Takatsu River through the seasons. Decide whether to go near the water based on conditions that day.

Food court

A place to eat at the ramen shop or Kofuku Menya “Maru.” On event days and weekend lunchtimes, allow for the meal rush and order waits.

Local produce shop

A place to choose local specialties, souvenirs, and vegetables. Following the reduced hours, plan around approximately 9:00–18:00.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Check the time before a late weekday lunch

The official site lists shortened food court hours from November 21, 2025, with weekdays generally 11:00–15:00. For meal planning, use those hours instead of the 8:00–20:00 hours still shown in some older tourism listings.

Reviews often describe it as an easy meal stop

Travel-site reviews tend to mention the choice of ramen and udon, the produce shop, and the convenience store. If your group has different tastes, it works well as a practical lunch stop rather than a trip built around one signature dish.

Even a short Takatsu River walk makes an impression

Official and tourism information describes the riverside park behind the station, river play, ayu fishing, and winter birdwatching. Even without entering the water, stepping into the riverside air gives this Route 9 stop a distinct feel.

Prepare for river play in summer and watch for birds in winter

In summer, towels, spare shoes, and a bag for wet items help when returning to the car. In winter, quietly watch the birds that come to the water. Because the seasonal experiences depend on conditions, adjust your visit to the weather and water level.

Check registration and seasonal hours for ground golf

The official listing gives 8:30–18:00 from April through September and 8:30–17:00 from October through March. Registration is near the produce shop register. It is a way to move around after lunch, though severe weather or maintenance may close the course.

Showers are useful after river play or camping

Separate warm-water showers for men and women are located beyond the main building's toilets. Listed hours are 9:00–19:00, at ¥100 for ten minutes. Keep them in mind before getting back in the car after river play or camping.

Makuraseyama and Nichihara Observatory make evening destinations

Makuraseyama Campground is listed among facilities related to the roadside station, and Nichihara Observatory is nearby. Eating and shopping at the station by day before going camping or observing the night sky makes good use of the Nichihara area.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The information corner is open 24 hours, but plan food and shopping around roughly 9:00–18:00. Be especially careful about finding a meal after 15:00 on weekdays.
  • The official visitor guide lists parking for 171 cars, 18 large vehicles, and four motorcycles. On event days, watch for activity around the ground golf course and food court when parking.
  • For the riverside park in summer, keep towels, spare shoes, and a bag for wet items in the car. If the water level or current concerns you, use the lawn and walking paths instead.
  • A cooler bag helps when buying vegetables or processed foods from the produce shop for the drive home. Avoid leaving them in a hot car.
  • If heading onward to Nichihara Observatory or Makuraseyama Campground, finish shopping and using the toilets in daylight and allow extra time for mountain-road driving at night.
  • Ground golf and showers add practical options, but registration, hours, and weather can affect use. Check the facility information before a visit built around them.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Chashu ramen (ramen topped with sliced roast pork)

  • Local produce shop
Local vegetables and wild mountain vegetables
A main draw if you want vegetables and wild mountain vegetables from Tsuwano Town. The selection changes with the season.
  • Souvenirs

Take-home flavors of the Takatsu River basin. Ayu uruka is a salted fermented delicacy made from ayu sweetfish. You can pick up local flavors even if you have already eaten.
  • Convenience store
    Supplies from Yamazaki Shop
Daily necessities, frozen foods, and more. A practical place to fill gaps before or after river play or camping.
