Toma's detour notes

Pear sweets, clam souvenirs, and the distinctive garden in one stop.

Toma Shinohara sees this station as an entry point to Yurihama's food and walks, beyond a shop beside the Chinese garden. Choose beef bone broth ramen for lunch, pear soft serve on a hot day, or clam products before leaving. Add a walk along Lake Togo or an onsen visit, and a rest stop becomes a real detour.

Highlights

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A Chinese garden is immediately beside this roadside station

Encho-en adjoins a Chinese garden built as a symbol of friendship between Tottori Prefecture and China's Hebei Province. The official site describes it as one of Japan's largest authentic Chinese gardens. You can simply shop at the station, but the gates, bridge, and Lake Togo waterfront make even a short break feel like a visit in its own right.

02

Choose among pear, clams, beef broth, and fried fish

Nijisseiki pear purée soft serve, Lake Togo freshwater clam soup and products, Tottori beef bone broth ramen, and a burger with fried horse mackerel from Sakaiminato cover sweets, snacks, lunch, and souvenirs.

03

Check the garden program on event days

The Chinese acrobatics show is normally held daily and included in garden admission. Official event listings included the roadside station's Moon Viewing Fair (September 1–30, 2026) and Chinese lion dances in the garden (October 3–4, 2026). If your dates match an event, check its current schedule before visiting.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A brief break toward Misasa or Kurayoshi

Stop for 20 minutes for pear soft serve and souvenirs

Use the toilet first after parking, then pick pear soft serve or a freshwater clam product from the shop. Even without entering the Chinese garden, its exterior and the lakeside setting give this stop a sense of place.

Parking → 24-hour toilets → shop and takeaway → departure

Meals are generally available during shop hours. In the late afternoon, prioritize shopping.

A first visit to Yurihama

Add the garden and acrobatics show for a half day

Decide on lunch or a sweet at the station, then visit the Chinese garden. Each acrobatics show lasts about 25 minutes, giving you a useful marker for your garden walk. Browse Chinese goods and sweets at Laolongtou on the way back to combine eating, sightseeing, and shopping.

Roadside station → Chinese garden → Chinese acrobatics show → Laolongtou → shop

Garden admission costs extra. Check last admission and show times before deciding when to eat.

An afternoon drive for adults

Finish at an easy pace with Lake Togo and an onsen

Walk briefly beside Lake Togo after eating, then, if time allows, visit the Chinese-style baths at Ryuhokaku or head toward Hawai or Togo Onsen. The waterfront and hot springs make for a relaxed end to the journey.

Roadside station → Lake Togo shore → Yuasis Togo Ryuhokaku or nearby onsen inns

Wind and weather change how the lakeshore feels. Watch for strong sun in summer and cold or slippery roads in winter.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Take children outside to play

Keep eating, shopping, and toilets brief at the station, then make room for activity in the garden plaza, summer hands-on events, Ryuhokaku's swimwear zone, or Ayameike Park.

Eat at the station → garden or Ryuhokaku → Ayameike Park

Events and the swimwear zone depend on dates, closures, and age suitability; check the official information for your day.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

The nursing room, baby changing station, and stroller loans make it a useful rest stop.

For services on the garden side, follow reception or staff guidance. A shop and toilet stop with a brief lakeside walk may be easier than a long walk.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Rather than spending the whole time inside the station, have a sweet and move on to the garden or plaza.

Keep hold of small children by the water or garden ponds. Plan what to do while waiting for food.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Chinese-style buildings, the acrobatics show, and pear soft serve make clear goals.

The show lasts about 25 minutes, a manageable span for many children. Expect crowds and heat on summer event days.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Walk while talking about the Chinese garden, Lake Togo, freshwater clams, and onsen.

Adding Ayameike Park or Ryuhokaku helps balance sightseeing with play.

Toilets

Official roadside station information lists 24-hour toilets, an accessible toilet, and a baby changing station.

Nursing and strollers

Information from the roadside station and main gate reception covers a nursing room and stroller and wheelchair loans.

Waterfront

The Lake Togo shore and garden ponds are scenic, so walk hand in hand with small children.

Rainy day

Combine the roadside station shop, Laolongtou, the acrobatics show, and Ryuhokaku for more indoor time.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Park and use the toilets first

There are spaces for ordinary and large vehicles, plus 24-hour toilets. Take a break before heading to the shop.

  2. 2
Keep the meal light if you wish

A shijimi oni set or pear soft serve makes for a quick stop. If you plan to walk through the garden, you can choose a lighter meal.

  3. 3
Adjust walking between the garden and shore

If entering the Chinese garden, plan your walk around the show time. Let wind and temperature guide the length of a lakeside stroll.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

There is more here than a quick shopping stop

Official information presents the roadside station and Chinese garden together, and the garden is just a short walk away. Visitors often remember the Chinese-style buildings and bridge. Allowing a little time for the exterior and lakeshore can make the stop more satisfying than visiting the shop alone.

Choose food by sweets, snack, lunch, or souvenir

Pear soft serve, the shijimi oni set, beef bone broth ramen, a fried horse mackerel burger, and pear or clam products each fill a different role. If lunch is crowded, switch to a sweet or something to take away.

Use the acrobatics show to time your visit

Shows are generally at 9:30, 13:30, and 15:00, with each lasting about 25 minutes. Planning around one makes it easier to time lunch, a garden walk, and the onward trip to an onsen.

Give children a place to play beyond the station

A nursing room, stroller loans, and a baby changing station are listed, but the station itself is not designed for hours of play. Add a garden event, Ryuhokaku's swimwear zone, or Ayameike Park to separate mealtime from playtime.

Watch summer events, spring flowers, and winter closures and roads

Summer vacation events were scheduled for July 2026 and garden fireworks for August 2026. In spring, moss phlox, peonies, and flowers at Ayameike Park offer reasons to walk nearby. In winter, check garden closure dates, snow, and road conditions.

Useful before or after an onsen stay

Tottori tourism information gives approximate drives of 15 minutes from Kurayoshi Station and 20 minutes from Misasa Onsen. It is a convenient place to combine souvenirs before checking in to an onsen inn, a snack before heading home, and a walk by Lake Togo.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Roadside station shop hours are approximately 9:00–17:00. Check shop displays and official notices for takeaway service and prices.
  • The Chinese garden has a different entrance arrangement from the roadside station, Laolongtou, and restaurant. If entering the garden, allow for admission fees and last admission at 16:30.
  • Photography is prohibited at the Chinese acrobatics show. If attending at a set time, decide whether to eat before or after.
  • Wind and sun change conditions along Lake Togo. Keep summer walks shorter; in winter, check road conditions and your footing.
  • Events can change conditions in the car park and surrounding roads. On garden fireworks or summer event days, plan for the return trip too.
  • The station's eateries and shop share the main station map pin. Treat nearby onsen, parks, and lakeshore sites as separate destinations to avoid confusion.
Food

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Something sweet on a hot day

Soft serve made with Nijisseiki pear purée

Good for a short break before or after walking through the garden or on the way to an onsen. Enjoy a taste of this pear-growing area without carrying too much into the car.

Prices and sizes may change; follow the shop display.

A light lunch

Beef bone broth ramen and the shijimi oni set

A quick combination of Tottori's casual local fare and Lake Togo flavors. It also works when you want to eat lightly before the garden or onsen.

Food service follows the shop and takeaway counter hours.

A snack for the drive

Fried horse mackerel burger and sweets at Laolongtou

Even if you do not sit down for a meal, there is room in the plan for fried horse mackerel from Sakaiminato or sweets at the Chinese goods shop.

Laolongtou is near the Chinese garden entrance and may keep different hours from the roadside station.

To take home

Nijisseiki pear confections, freshwater clam products, and local vegetables

Before heading to an onsen inn or home, choose shelf-stable gifts separately from ingredients for dinner. Lake Togo freshwater clams are a particularly local talking point.

On an event day

Food from stalls and events

When dates line up with a spring appreciation festival or food festival, explore the stalls and event area as well as the regular shop.

Check the official calendar and tourism association notices for the event year, hours, and rain plans.
