Toma Saegusa's detour notes

See the sea, eat fish and add one Hakuto souvenir.

Toma Saegusa sees this stop as more than just a meal or a shrine visit. Looking over Hakuto Coast first makes it easier to choose between seafood at Ginrintei, a sweet treat at Sunaba Coffee and a rabbit-themed souvenir from the shop. This National Route 9 break adds a little Tottori food and storytelling to the drive.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shinwa no Sato Shiro Usagi is a seaside roadside station on National Route 9 between central Tottori City and the Kurayoshi and Yonago direction. Hakuto Coast, Hakuto Shrine and Hakuto Hill can be visited together. Even a look over the Sea of Japan from the second-floor terrace, seafood at Ginrintei, coffee soft-serve at Sunaba Coffee and a rabbit-themed souvenir from the shop make a memorable stop. The parking area and restaurants can get busy during summer swimming season and at lunchtime, so shifting the order of your meal, walk and shopping can make the visit easier.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The coast, shrine and food are connected on foot

Hakuto Coast is in front of the building and Hakuto Shrine behind it. The second-floor terrace connects to a pedestrian bridge, making it easy to go from your car to the sea, shrine and shops. Even when sightseeing time is short, a 30-minute break can become a distinctly Hakuto detour.

02

Plan a meal around seafood or coffee soft-serve

Ginrintei on the second floor is a seafood restaurant overlooking Hakuto Coast, with live fish. For a lighter stop, head to Sunaba Coffee on the first floor for coffee soft-serve or a drink. Keeping your lunch timing flexible helps when it is crowded.

03

Shop for Hakuto and Tottori souvenirs in one place

The shop brings together rabbit-themed sweets and goods with Tottori specialties. It is a useful stop on National Route 9 when you have no time to shop at Tottori Station or the airport on your way home.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

While traveling from central Tottori City toward Kurayoshi or Yonago

Take home a taste of Hakuto in 30 minutes

After parking, use the toilets, look at the sea from the second-floor terrace, then visit the shop. Even on a short stop, a rabbit-themed souvenir and a sweet treat from Sunaba Coffee make it more than a routine break.

Parking → toilets → second-floor terrace → shop → Sunaba Coffee

Parking can fill on summer weekends. Allow extra time around midday, when beach use peaks.

A weekend drive with a first visit to Hakuto Shrine

Lunch and a shrine visit in 90 minutes

Visit Hakuto Shrine first, have seafood at Ginrintei, then choose souvenirs at the shop. The meal overlooking the sea is the focus, so check the last admission time and crowding before you plan to eat.

Hakuto Shrine → Ginrintei → second-floor terrace → shop

Ginrintei is closed on Thursdays and has different weekday and weekend or holiday hours. For busy periods such as Obon, the summer holiday season, follow its official notices.

A clear day, couples or an adult detour

Walk more of Hakuto along the coast

Cross the pedestrian bridge to Hakuto Coast and continue toward views of Oki-no-shima, Hakuto Hill and Cape Keta. On windy days or when waves are high, stay around the terrace and shrine rather than going down to the sand.

Second-floor terrace → pedestrian bridge → Hakuto Coast → Hakuto Hill → roadside station

Sun, wind and sand can change how the coast feels. Carry drinks in summer and wind protection in winter.

Families with preschool and elementary school children

Keep a family visit short and enjoy the sea view

Use the nursing room or multipurpose toilets. If you go to the coast, keep the beach walk short rather than planning a long play session on the sand. If the restaurant wait looks long, switching to Sunaba Coffee or the shop can help prevent children getting tired.

Toilets and nursing room → terrace → shop or dessert → short coast walk if weather permits

The parking area and coast are busy during swimming season. Keep children close by the waterline, on the pedestrian bridge and along National Route 9.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

A nursing room and multipurpose toilets make a short break easier.

Check wind, sand and sun if you take a baby to the coast. Nurse or change diapers first; the terrace alone can be enough for a short outing.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

The sea and rabbit statues may appeal, but children need close supervision near National Route 9 and the waterline.

Keep beach visits short. If the wait for food is long, switch to the shop or a sweet treat.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Rabbit statues at the shrine, the coast and soft-serve make an easy set of activities.

Walking from Hakuto Shrine to the coast can feel like a small adventure. In summer, plan for water and a change of clothes.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Walk while looking for links to the White Rabbit of Inaba myth, Oki-no-shima and coastal landforms.

Add Hakuto Hill or the Cape Keta direction to see both the myth and landscape. When waves are high, the terrace and shrine are an easier choice.

Nursing room

The station's facility guide lists a nursing room. Check on-site signs for its hours.

Multipurpose toilet

Ostomate facilities and a larger changing surface are listed.

Coastal walk

Wind, waves, sand and sunshine change conditions. A long walk in the summer midday heat may be tiring.

Restaurant wait

If Ginrintei is busy, switch to Sunaba Coffee, the shop or a walk on the terrace.

Event

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Spaces used for events

Hakuto Coast swimming season

In 2026, the swimming season ran from July 11 to August 16, with lifeguard supervision from 9:00–16:00, according to the Tottori City tourism site. Outside the season, lifeguards, showers and changing rooms are not operating. Check the Tottori City tourism site for next summer's dates. The station's parking and surrounding paths are also more crowded during swimming season.

Hakuto Festival

Tottori City says the Hakuto Festival is held each year in early August. On days with fireworks or other events, allow for different levels of crowding in the parking area, on National Route 9 and at restaurants.

Rabbit stationmaster commemorative events

Official notices sometimes announce commemorative events for En, the second rabbit stationmaster. Limited items and event dates vary, so check official updates for the day of your visit.

Ginrintei's busy-season hours

For Obon 2026, the official notice listed August 8–16 as 11:00–17:00, with last orders at 16:00, and August 17 as a substitute closure. Busy-season hours are announced separately for each period in official notices.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

See the sea first to get a feel for the station

The official facility guide describes views over Hakuto Coast from the second-floor terrace and access to the coast by pedestrian bridge. Visitor reviews and travel accounts also often combine food and shopping with the coast, shrine and view. See the scenery first, then decide how long to stay.

Shift a seafood lunch slightly away from the peak

Ginrintei is a second-floor restaurant overlooking Hakuto Coast. Official notices warn that admission may end early in busy periods. If seafood is your main reason for visiting, do not spend too long at the shrine first; planning for opening time or an early lunch makes the day easier.

Sunaba Coffee also offers an alternative to waiting for a meal

The official specialties page introduces soft-serve made with Jersey milk and Sunaba coffee. Travel accounts also describe seeing the sea and Oki-no-shima from window seats. Even without a restaurant meal, it is a useful Tottori-style sweet break.

Weather strongly shapes a shrine and coast visit

Hakuto Coast has white sand, Oki-no-shima, beach roses and sunsets; the view changes with season and weather. On windy days or in winter, a shorter visit to Hakuto Shrine, the second-floor terrace and Sunaba Coffee can be more comfortable than a long beach walk.

Hakuto souvenirs are handy before the drive home

The shop offers Hakuto-themed souvenirs and Tottori specialties, so you can shop along National Route 9 after visiting the Tottori Sand Dunes or central Tottori City. Food, shopping, worship and the sea give companions with different interests reasons to stop.
