How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

See first
Sekigane wasabi and the seasonal produce shelves

Look for Sekigane wasabi year-round, wild greens in spring, watermelon and melon in summer, and pears and chestnuts in autumn; what is worth buying changes with the season.

For a meal
A wasabi rice bowl or medicinal-cuisine lunch at the restaurant

The restaurant opens only around lunchtime. If you are stopping to eat, check it before browsing the shop so you do not miss its hours.

With children
Short stops at the restroom, restaurant, and outdoor water area

This is not a station for a long play session on large equipment. Break the stop into short visits to the diaper-changing station, a meal, and the area around Toge no Meisui spring.

With a dog
Dog run with registration required

Hours are generally 9:00–16:00 and the fee is ¥500 per dog. Check the official requirements, including dog registration tags, before you go.

On a rainy day
Visit the shop and restaurant, then head to the hot spring

Keep outdoor walking short and add Sekigane Yumekan at Sekigane Onsen for an easier family outing.

Toma's detour notes

At this mountain-pass station, decide when to rest before planning play.

Inubasari is not a station where children spend half a day on play equipment. For a family, it helps to plan the order: restroom, lunch, shop, outdoor water area, and the dog run if traveling with a dog. Enjoy medicinal cuisine and wasabi if the restaurant fits your timing; if the weather turns, continue to Sekigane Onsen. This station gives you room for an unhurried break on the mountain road.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Inubasari is a small rest stop near the prefectural border on Inubasari Pass, along National Route 313 from Sekigane-cho in Kurayoshi toward Hiruzen in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. Its highlights are souvenirs made with Sekigane wasabi, vegetables from central Tottori and the Hiruzen area, and the wasabi rice bowl and yin-yang yakuzen lunch at Yakuzenshokudo Inubasari, where yakuzen means cuisine guided by traditional ideas about ingredients. On clear days, take an outdoor break at the dog run or Toge no Meisui spring; on rainy or cold days, make a short circuit of the shop, restaurant, and tourism brochures before continuing to Sekigane Onsen or the former Kurayoshi Railway Line ruins.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Sekigane wasabi gives you a reason to stop

Inubasari is not a large complex, but Sekigane wasabi has a clear presence. From wasabi roots and leaves to wasabi soy sauce, dressing, noodles, and rice bowls, there is an easy theme to follow even on a short stop.

02

The medicinal-cuisine restaurant makes lunch part of the visit

At Yakuzenshokudo Inubasari, choose from the yin-yang medicinal-cuisine lunch, wasabi rice bowl, medicinal-cuisine curry, beef-bone ramen, and wasabi soft serve while reading the displayed descriptions of the ingredients' traditional properties. Children can choose udon or soft serve while adults opt for wasabi or medicinal cuisine, making different tastes easier to accommodate.

03

Plan around your dog, winter roads, and a hot spring

Inubasari Pass is on the mountain road connecting Kurayoshi and Hiruzen. On clear days, add an outdoor break at the dog run or spring; in winter or rain, keep the meal and shopping brief before heading to Sekigane Onsen. Check road live cameras and winter travel information before setting out.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Travel between Kurayoshi and Hiruzen

Only 30 minutes? Start with wasabi souvenirs and the restroom

After parking, use the restroom and browse Sekigane wasabi products and seasonal vegetables in the shop. Even without a meal, one item such as wasabi soy sauce, wasabi noodles, pears, or Hiruzen daikon makes the border-area stop memorable.

Parking → restroom → shop and produce market → departure

There are 29 standard-car spaces. During holidays or lunchtime, a focused shopping stop can be easier than a long stay.

A family drive with a meal

Make the medicinal-cuisine restaurant your lunch stop

The restaurant generally opens from 11:00 into the early afternoon. Consider a wasabi rice bowl, yin-yang medicinal-cuisine lunch, medicinal-cuisine curry, or beef-bone ramen, then have wasabi soft serve or browse the shop. Reading the displayed descriptions of ingredients is part of the experience.

Medicinal-cuisine restaurant → shop → Toge no Meisui spring or rest area

The restaurant closes earlier in winter. For a meal-focused stop, follow the latest official or social-media notice.

A National Route 313 drive with your dog

Check the dog run first when traveling with a dog

Check registration requirements and required documents before using the dog run. If you qualify, let your dog take an outdoor break before visiting the shop. The restaurant says dogs cannot enter, so arrange for companions to take turns or keep the shopping stop short.

Confirm registration → dog run → shop → departure

The dog run is generally open 9:00–16:00 and costs ¥500 per dog. Keep the outdoor stop short in bad weather or if you lack the required documents.

Young children, three generations, or a cold-day break

In rain or winter, continue to Sekigane Onsen

When the lawn and spring area are less inviting, eat and shop at Inubasari, then drive about 10 minutes to Sekigane Yumekan. Its baths and rest room can help children and older companions relax after the mountain road.

Michi-no-Eki Inubasari → Sekigane Yumekan → Sekigane Onsen area

Yumekan's closures generally center on Mondays but may change. In winter, also check National Route 313 road information.

A half-day spring or autumn detour

In walking weather, add the railway ruins or Daisen Pond

The former Kurayoshi Railway Line ruins offer a Sekigane-area walk past the former Taikyuji Station and bamboo grove. Daisen Pond is another option for time by the water. Have lunch and use the restroom at the station, then choose one nature or history stop for a half-day outing.

Roadside station → former Kurayoshi Railway Line ruins or Daisen Pond → Sekigane Onsen

The railway ruins involve walking from the car park. Check open-day or guided-tour dates and conditions underfoot after rain.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for a short indoor break centered on the diaper-changing station.

This is not a place for lengthy outdoor play, so keep the restroom, shop, and return to the car close together. Decide on the restaurant after checking lunchtime crowds.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Works for short segments of food, soft serve, and the spring area.

Hold children's hands near the water and parking area. On rainy days, heading to Sekigane Onsen is easier than extending the outdoor visit.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Wasabi soft serve, seasonal fruit, and a short outdoor break offer a change of pace.

Let children choose one food item rather than coming for large play equipment. If bringing a dog, check dog-run requirements first.

Elementary school children
★★★★☆

Add the railway ruins, Daisen Pond, or Sekigane Onsen for a half-day outing.

At the former Kurayoshi Railway Line ruins, judge walking distance and footing. Pair a spring or autumn walk in good weather with lunch at the station for a historical detour.

Diaper changing

Diaper-changing stations are listed in both the outdoor and indoor multipurpose restrooms.

Outdoor play

Keep visits to the waterside lawn and spring area short, depending on weather and footing.

With a dog

The dog run requires registration and documents including a dog registration tag. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant.

On a rainy day

Briefly visit the shop, restaurant, and tourist information, then shift to the hot spring or railway-ruins information center.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

For wasabi, consider the restaurant and shop separately

Both official product information and visitor-review trends point to Sekigane wasabi as a highlight. Whether you come for a wasabi rice bowl or soft serve, or to buy wasabi soy sauce or noodles, planning the two separately makes a short visit easier to enjoy.

Do not leave lunch too late

The restaurant generally runs 11:00–15:00; in winter it is listed until 14:00 on weekdays and 14:30 on weekends and holidays. If you plan lunch while traveling along National Route 313, go to the restaurant first.

The produce market changes with the season

Spring brings wasabi leaves and wild greens; summer brings corn, melon, and watermelon; autumn brings grapes, pears, chestnuts, and wild mushrooms. Instead of expecting the same shelves year-round, pick one seasonal find.

Plan restaurant time separately when bringing a dog

The dog run is useful, but dogs are not allowed in the restaurant. Decide early whether family members will take turns, focus on the shop, or keep the visit to an outdoor break.

Road information matters in winter and rain

Inubasari Pass lies in the mountains on National Route 313. The official access page links to road live cameras and traffic information, so check conditions before planning a meal or hot-spring stop in snow or heavy rain.

For half a day, add Sekigane Onsen or the railway ruins

For a longer outing, add one of Sekigane Onsen, the former Kurayoshi Railway Line ruins, or Daisen Pond. The ruins suit elementary-school children and older visitors; the hot spring is easier with young children or in rain.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Official station hours are 9:00–18:00 from April to November and 9:00–17:00 from December to March. Check the official closure schedule, especially around New Year.

  • Parking has 41 spaces: 29 standard cars, 10 large vehicles, and 2 accessible spaces. There is no EV charger; the official guide lists nearby charging stations about a 10-minute drive away.
  • In winter or severe weather, check National Route 313 live cameras and road restrictions first. The official guide does not recommend walking to the station because of the steep grade.
  • All 2026 railway-ruins Open Days have reached capacity and registration is closed. Ordinary railway-ruins trekking is listed for group bookings only; check Kurayoshi Tourism Information.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

A signature option at Yakuzenshokudo Inubasari. Check the menu on site for heat level and availability.

Original products made with Sekigane wasabi and good first choices to take home.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A full lunch

Wasabi rice bowl, yin-yang medicinal-cuisine lunch, medicinal-cuisine curry

For a visit centered on the restaurant. Adults can choose wasabi or medicinal cuisine, while children choose curry or noodles.

The restaurant opens at lunchtime. It may close earlier in winter or on weekdays, so switch to a shop-focused stop if you arrive late.

A lighter bite

Beef-bone ramen, chilled udon or soba, wasabi soft serve

For a day when you do not want a full set meal. Take a break before or after the mountain road without a heavy meal.

Take something home

Wasabi soy sauce, wasabi dressing, wasabi noodles

Bring a taste of Sekigane to your table. Choose something for sashimi, tofu, salad, or noodles.

Shop the season

Wasabi leaves, wild greens, strawberries, tomatoes, pears, chestnuts

The produce shelves change with the seasons. Look for wild greens in spring, fruit in summer, and pears or chestnuts in autumn; enjoy whatever is in season when you arrive.

When lunchtime is busy

Shop, tourism brochures, then the hot spring

If the restaurant is hard to fit in at lunchtime, shop first and leave time to continue to Sekigane Onsen, especially with children.
