How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First things first
Parking and restrooms

Approximately 118 standard car and 24 large-vehicle spaces are listed. The grounds are long, so families can park near the shop or park they plan to visit.

Eat lunch
Akasakitei

The cooperative-run restaurant is generally open 11:00–14:00. On Wednesdays or busy days, switch to Kyora, Fish Restaurant Umi, or a shopping-focused stop.

Shop to take home
Fresh fish, Kotoura pears and vegetables

Buy fish at the cooperative shop and produce at Agri Port Kotoura. In hot weather, plan for a cooler bag and the time until you get home.

Let children play
Tako Park

The large playground and open space give children a place to move during a long drive. Watch the sea breeze and sun in summer.

Take a short walk
Kaze no Oka or Nariishi Beach

The Japan–Korea Friendship Museum is a short walk away; Nariishi Beach needs a short drive. Either can fit after lunch.

Toma’s rest-stop notes

Leave room for fish, pears and the playground, as well as seafood.

Toma Hinata sees this long, port-town station as a place to reset a family break. Check parking, restrooms and restaurant hours first; if lunch is busy, try beef-bone ramen or the direct sales shops. Children can play at Tako Park, while adults can extend the stop to Kaze no Oka or Nariishi Beach. Even if one plan falls through, there is still a way to enjoy Kotoura.

Eat

Akasakitei during the 11:00 hour; Kyora if you arrive later. A backup meal plan helps.

Shop

Browse fish separately from pears and vegetables. A cooler bag gives you more options.

Play

Let children move at Tako Park; if time allows, add Kaze no Oka or Nariishi Beach.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Port Akasaki sits on Route 9 and combines a restroom stop with the Akasaki Town Fishery Cooperative fresh fish shop and Akasakitei restaurant, the adjacent JA Agri Port Kotoura farm shop, Tottori beef-bone ramen at Kyora, and the playground nicknamed Tako Park (Octopus Park). A seafood lunch alone can be missed on Wednesdays or after the 14:00 closing time. Leave room to buy fish, choose pears and vegetables, switch to beef-bone ramen, let children play, or make short trips to Kaze no Oka and Nariishi Beach.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A strong shopping stop with separate seafood and farm produce shops

The station has the Akasaki Town Fishery Cooperative fresh fish sales center, and the adjacent JA Tottori Chuo Agri Port Kotoura offers vegetables and fruit. You can shop for both in one stop. From summer into autumn, successive Kotoura pear varieties are another attraction; a cooler bag makes buying fish and fruit easier.

02

Seafood at lunch, with beef-bone ramen if the timing does not work

The cooperative-run Akasakitei is a lunch option, generally open 11:00–14:00. Seating is limited, so on busy days or Wednesdays, consider Kyora beef-bone ramen, the neighboring fish restaurant, or shopping at the direct sales centers to keep your plans flexible.

03

Tako Park for children, Kaze no Oka within walking distance for adults

The large play equipment and open space at Tako Park offer families a chance to move after a long drive on Route 9. The nearby Japan–Korea Friendship Museum at Kaze no Oka is free and introduces local history and Korean culture, making it a short after-lunch walk.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 45–75 minute lunch break

Make a short stop around a seafood lunch

If you can arrive during the 11:00 hour, check the restroom and likely wait for a seat before going to Akasakitei. After lunch, browse the fresh fish shop for fish or processed seafood to take home for a distinctly Akasaki Port stop.

Park → restroom → Akasakitei → fresh fish direct sales center → depart

On Wednesdays, at the start of the year, or after 14:00, do not count on a seafood restaurant meal.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Let children play before shopping

If the children are restless after the drive, start at Tako Park. Then shop for fruit and vegetables at Agri Port Kotoura and take-home items at the fishery cooperative shop; this order can make shopping easier for the whole family.

Park → Tako Park → restroom → Agri Port Kotoura → fresh fish shop

The playground is outdoors; shorten the visit at midday in midsummer or on very windy days.

Late lunch or an evening Route 9 drive

Choose beef-bone ramen when you miss the lunch window

If you miss Akasakitei’s lunch service, make Kyora’s beef-bone ramen your meal. Its scheduled evening service lets you combine food with shopping or a restroom break before continuing the drive.

Park → Kyora → direct sales shops or convenience store → depart

Kyora may change its hours temporarily; check its social media or town information before making a detour.

A half-day detour or adult stroll

Add Kaze no Oka and Nariishi Beach

After seafood or beef-bone ramen at the station, walk to the Japan–Korea Friendship Museum for Akasaki’s history of exchange. If time allows, continue to Nariishi Beach, where waves make the stones sound; it suits a short walk in fair weather.

Station → Japan–Korea Friendship Museum at Kaze no Oka → Nariishi Beach → return

Nariishi Beach is a stony shore. Walking shoes are more suitable than a stroller, and avoid the shore in rough weather.

Accessible-travel information and roadside-station guides list access to rest facilities and restrooms. Treat these separately from shop hours.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Restroom breaks and brief shopping are manageable; a longer stay depends on the weather.

The Chugoku Regional Development Bureau lists a diaper changing table. Do not plan around a nursing room without confirmed permanent availability; keep the visit short, using the convenience store or a break in your car as needed.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Tako Park gives children a chance to move and take a break from the drive.

The playground is appealing but exposed to coastal sun and wind. Plan the order of activities to avoid a long restaurant wait.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The large playground, fish market, pears and vegetables offer several points of interest.

Decide whether to play before or after eating. Watch children’s footing and hands at the fish shop.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Add learning and a walk at Kaze no Oka or Nariishi Beach to Tako Park.

The Japan–Korea Friendship Museum is free and introduces Korean culture and the history of exchange. Listening to the stones at Nariishi Beach makes a good nature experience.

Play equipment is outdoors

At summer midday, in rain, or in strong wind, keep Tako Park brief and move to the shops or a meal.

Avoid the meal rush

Akasakitei opens only for lunch. If children cannot wait, consider Kyora, the convenience store, or nearby restaurants first.

Choose shoes for the beach

Nariishi Beach is a stony shore. Walking children will find it easier than those who need to be carried or use a stroller.

A cooler bag helps

When buying fresh fish, pears or vegetables, consider the journey home and the temperature inside the car.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose where to park first

The grounds stretch sideways, so walking distance depends on whether the restaurant, sales shops or park is your main stop.

  2. 2
    Check each place’s hours separately

The seafood restaurant opens at lunch, the sales shops until late afternoon, and Kyora has an evening service period. You do not have to fit everything into one visit.

  3. 3
Take a short walk to Kaze no Oka after eating

The nearby museum offers local history without a long trip. Check its Wednesday closure.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Tako Park and Akasaki Fureai Square

An outdoor square whose playground equipment was renewed in 2023. Even without an event, it is a useful stop for children during a station visit.

Seasonal produce at Agri Port Kotoura

Kotoura pears are a highlight from summer into autumn. Varieties come into season at different times, so check the shop and JA information when choosing.

Events at Nariishi Beach

Local shore events, including the Nariishi Festival, can be added by a short drive from the station. Check the next scheduled date rather than relying on a past event listing.

Kaze no Oka and the Japan–Korea Friendship Museum

Except for its Wednesday closure, this museum makes it easy to add a cultural stroll after eating at the station. Seasons and group visits can change the experience.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Fish, pears, beef-bone ramen and a playground together define this stop

The Kotoura tourism association and Tottori tourism information present Akasaki Port seafood, farm produce sales, beef-bone ramen and Fureai Square together. Think of it as separate shops and a park to walk between, rather than one large building.

Pear season is a strong reason to visit Agri Port Kotoura

JA Tottori Chuo says pear varieties arrive in succession from summer and autumn through early spring. Buying seafood and fruit on one stop is convenient, but on hot days let the car temperature and time until you get home guide how much you buy.

Nariishi Beach suits a short fair-weather detour

Waves make the stones sound at this natural shore, a short drive from the station. The stony footing is uneven, so it is better for a brief walk by adults or walking children than for strollers or rough weather.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Wednesday closures often coincide at the fishery cooperative shop, Akasakitei and the Japan–Korea Friendship Museum. On Wednesdays, plan around beef-bone ramen, the convenience store and outdoor breaks.
  • Akasakitei serves lunch only, while Kyora generally has separate lunch and evening service. If your meal time is uncertain, choose a fallback in advance.
  • Bring a cooler bag when buying fresh fish, pears or vegetables. In summer, shopping last may work best.
  • Tako Park is outdoors. At summer midday or in rain or strong wind, keep the visit short and switch to the sales shops or a break in the car.
  • Nariishi Beach is stony. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and do not go down to the shore when waves or weather are rough.
  • Nearby options include Kaze no Oka on foot, Nariishi Beach by a short drive, and an adjacent fish restaurant. Trying to fit all of them in may feel rushed.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Lunch
Seafood rice bowl and daily set meals at Akasakitei, the fishery cooperative restaurant
Generally 11:00–14:00. Check for Wednesday and early-year closures.

Official guidance is 9:30–17:00. Bring cooling supplies for food to take home.

JA guidance: 9:00–17:30 from March through October; 9:00–17:00 from November through February.

    Tottori Beef-Bone Ramen Kyora
Generally 11:00–15:00 and 17:30–20:00. A useful option if you miss the seafood lunch.
  • Nearby dining
    Fish Restaurant Umi
A popular restaurant beside the station. Allow for a wait when it is busy.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Eat seafood

Fishery Cooperative Restaurant Akasakitei

For a lunch that reflects Akasaki Port, look for a seafood rice bowl, daily set meal, or locally landed seafood.

Official guidance is 11:00–14:00 and 26 seats. Expect possible waits or sellouts at lunchtime on holidays.

Buy fish

Akasaki Town Fishery Cooperative Direct Sales Center

Shop for fresh fish, processed seafood and souvenirs. Because the cooperative runs it, you can take a taste of Akasaki home even without dining at the restaurant.

Generally closed Wednesdays and at the start of the year. Selection changes with landings and season.

Choose fruit

Agri Port Kotoura

Look for produce from the foothills of Mount Daisen, Kotoura pears, and vegetables. Summer into autumn is a good time to compare pear varieties.

JA lists periods with irregular closures about once a month. Shop early for pears and other fresh produce.

Eat outside the seafood lunch hours

Tottori Beef-Bone Ramen Kyora

An option if you miss seafood lunch or want a warm meal in the evening. Its beef-bone broth is a Tottori style of ramen.

Generally offers separate lunch and evening service. Check social media for temporary changes.

Handle a busy restaurant

Fish Restaurant Umi and the convenience store

The neighboring fish restaurant and convenience store provide alternatives when the family cannot wait for one meal option.

Popular restaurants may have a wait. Check how busy they are after parking.
