Toma's stopover note

At Daiei, deciding what to buy naturally leads to a walk nearby.

Start at the farm market instead of passing by with only the first-registration title in mind. Choosing a Daiei watermelon, sand-dune nagaimo, Nebarikko yam, flowers or vegetables brings Hokuei's fields closer. If hungry, try beef-bone ramen; for something sweet, watermelon soft-serve. A short walk afterward to Conan Street or Yura Daiba turns the break into a small outing.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Daiei was among the roadside stations registered in the first round in 1993. Its morning farm market remains the main draw. Registered growers bring vegetables, fruit and flowers to Odaiba Ichiba. Daiei watermelons draw shoppers from June to around the Obon holiday in August; sand-dune nagaimo and Nebarikko yams are reasons to stop in autumn and winter. At midday, try beef-bone broth ramen or dishes made with Tottori ingredients at Domannaka Shokudo. For a lighter stop, choose watermelon soft-serve or obanyaki, a filled griddled cake. Toma Seto suggests shopping first, then adding the neighboring Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory, Conan Street and Odaiba Park.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

See Hokuei's harvest first at the morning market

At Odaiba Ichiba, the focus is vegetables, fruit and flowers brought in by local farmers each morning. On weekends and in peak seasons, people may gather before opening, so browse the stalls before eating if the market is your main purpose. Plan for the weight of a Daiei watermelon in season and how to pack long nagaimo yams in your car in autumn and winter: shopping can shape the whole stop.

02

Choose beef-bone ramen for a meal or watermelon soft-serve for a snack

Domannaka Shokudo serves beef-bone broth ramen and dishes featuring local Tottori ingredients. Go there for a full lunch, or stop at Takeout Daiba for watermelon soft-serve or obanyaki, a filled griddled cake, when you only want something sweet between drives. Even a short stop can include a local flavor.

03

A walk is waiting just beyond lunch

The Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory is very close to the station. Conan Street, which leads toward Yura Station, and Odaiba Park, containing the Yura Daiba battery remains, are also within comfortable walking distance. You can turn a shopping stop into a 30-minute walk, an indoor museum visit on a rainy day, or outdoor play for children.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Shopping drives from June through summer

A morning stop centered on Daiei watermelon and farm produce

Visit Odaiba Ichiba soon after it opens and choose your watermelon, vegetables, flowers and processed foods first. If buying heavy or perishable items, bring a cooler bag and allow room in the car.

Park → Odaiba Ichiba → Takeout Daiba → arrange shipping or packing if needed → depart.

Seasonal stock changes with deliveries and weather. Mornings generally offer more choice than afternoons.

Families, friends and first-time visitors to central Tottori

Make lunch and a Conan walk a half-day outing

Choose beef-bone broth ramen or Tottori-ingredient dishes at Domannaka Shokudo for lunch, then visit the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory, Conan Street and Beika Shopping Street. The station alone can be a short stop; adding the nearby sights can fill half a day.

Michi-no-Eki Daiei → Domannaka Shokudo → Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory → Conan Street or Beika Shopping Street.

The museum may close, limit admission during busy periods or change nearby parking arrangements. Check its official guidance once your visit date is set.

Travel days with preschool or elementary-school children

A Route 9 break for children to move outdoors

On a long drive, keep shopping brief and head to Odaiba Park. The open space at the Yura Daiba remains and the children’s play area offer a break before the next stretch in the car. A short outdoor pause may work better than a long history lesson.

Park → restrooms → snack → Odaiba Park → return to the car.

The park is near the sea. Keep the visit short as needed for summer sun, winter wind or wet ground after rain.

Adults traveling to eat and shop

A drive comparing central Tottori's foods

After Daiei's longstanding farm market, registered in the first round of roadside stations, and beef-bone ramen, drive to Michi-no-Eki Hojo to compare newer presentations of Nebarikko yam, rakkyo pickled shallots, grapes and limited-time sweets. The two Hokuei stations play different roles: traditional direct sales at Daiei and a newer combined facility at Hojo.

Michi-no-Eki Daiei → short walk on Conan Street → Michi-no-Eki Hojo.

Events and seasonal menus at Hojo change quickly. Check its official notices before a food-focused visit.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

Focus on restrooms and a brief shopping stop; a longer walk depends on the adults' energy.

A short visit using the station parking, market and snacks is practical. If adding the museum or park, plan around feeding, diaper changes and weather without overextending the day.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Odaiba Park offers a chance to get outside.

Children who tire of shopping can switch to the play area or multipurpose field. Keep outdoor time brief in strong summer sun or winter wind.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Watermelon soft-serve, the park and Conan Street provide easy goals.

If meals involve waiting or the car journey is long, one sweet treat and one outdoor play stop can help. Choose a manageable stretch for the character-themed walk.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

The museum, Conan Street and Yura Daiba remains can make a half-day trip.

Combine manga, a town walk, the historic site and farm shopping. Favor the museum on rainy days, or Odaiba Park and Conan Street in fair weather.

Meals

Use Domannaka Shokudo for lunch and Takeout Daiba for a shorter stop.

Outdoor play

Odaiba Park's children’s area and multipurpose field offer a short chance to let off energy.

Rainy days

The Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory makes plans less dependent on the weather.

Walking distance

The full Conan Street route is about 1.4 km; choose just part of it to suit children’s ages.

Spaces used for events

Seasonal Daiei watermelon display

The national roadside-station association says Daiei watermelon is sold in a special area from June to around late July. Weather and deliveries affect what is available, so make the farm market your first stop on a summer shopping trip.

Seasonal events at Michi-no-Eki Hojo

Hojo has announced 2026 events using Hokuei produce, including a Watermelon Festival, Rakkyo Festival and first-anniversary celebration. If adding a food stop after Daiei, check each event's start and end dates.

Museum closures and busy-period arrangements

The Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory's usual hours are 9:30–17:30, with last admission at 17:00. Admission limits and parking changes were announced for summer 2026; check the museum's official guidance if it is the main purpose of your Conan walk.

Events at Yura Daiba remains and Odaiba Park

The Yura Daiba remains are a historic site also used for local events and school outings. Events can change the feel of a park visit, so watch crowding and parking conditions and switch to a short break if needed.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Avoid Thursdays if the restaurant is your main reason to visit

Hokuei Town lists Domannaka Shokudo as open 11:00–17:00 and closed Thursdays. Check its operating day when beef-bone ramen is the goal.

The museum is a useful rainy-day alternative

When outdoor Conan Street or the park is less appealing, the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory offers an indoor option. Check official notices for admission restrictions or parking changes on your visit date.

Odaiba Park works for both a short play break and a historic-site visit

Yura Daiba remains have historic value, while the park also hosts local events and outings. With small children, use the broad outdoor space for a break instead of trying to cover every historical explanation.

Comparing Daiei with newer Hojo reveals more of Hokuei's food

Daiei's strengths are traditional farm sales and a Route 9 rest stop; Hojo has a wooden station building and newer food offerings. Visiting both broadens the range of local specialties to explore.

Shop in the morning

Vegetables, fruit and flowers at Odaiba Ichiba

If the farm market is your goal, browse it before the restaurant. Earlier visits tend to leave more choice on weekends and in peak seasons.

New Year closures, seasonal hours and daily delivery volumes vary.

Shop by season

Daiei watermelon, sand-dune nagaimo and Nebarikko yams

Choose one seasonal specialty to take home from Hokuei. For watermelon, consider cooling and car space; for nagaimo, think about how you will cook it after returning home.

Have lunch

Beef-bone broth ramen at Domannaka Shokudo

The restaurant is generally open 11:00–17:00 for beef-bone broth ramen and dishes using Tottori ingredients. Lunch before a Conan walk leaves time to explore.

Closed Thursdays; soup or ingredients may sell out, and hours may change temporarily.

A quick sweet stop

Watermelon soft-serve and obanyaki

Even if a full lunch feels too much, watermelon soft-serve gives you a quick local taste. It also works well as a break with children.

Takeout Daiba closes on irregular days.

Explore more food

Nebarikko yam, rakkyo shallots and seasonal sweets at Michi-no-Eki Hojo

After Daiei's traditional farm market, compare Hojo's newer products and events to see more of Hokuei's food culture.
