How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Check the toilets and meal times before exploring

The station, restaurant, cafe, fish shop, night market, aquarium, and hot spring all keep different hours. With children, locate the toilets and a cool indoor place first.

For lunch
Seafood or inobuta pork at Sokai

Choose from sashimi, a luxury seafood bowl, boiled whitebait, sanma sushi, or an inobuta grilled-meat bowl: flavors from the sea and the hills. Leave room for changes to dishes that depend on the catch.

If time is short
Enjoy the sea view over cafe food and shopping

Susami Cafe is listed as opening at 9:00. Even a quick stop for bread, pudding, or a light meal with a view of Esuzaki feels like a southern Wakayama break.

On a rainy day
Visit the Crab and Shrimp Aquarium

This indoor attraction shares the station site. It has a last-admission time, so visit it first if you arrive late in the day.

From late afternoon
Try Susami Night Market or Nozomi no Yu

The night market is listed for Thursday through Sunday and public holidays; the hot spring is inside the adjoining hotel. Check current opening days and admission times if you plan an evening visit.

For nearby stops
Esuzaki, Japanese Children's Song Garden, and Koibito Misaki

Nearby stops are enough for a short detour with sea views. For half a day, extend the trip to Kushimoto Marine Park or Susami Beach.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Susami is close to National Route 42 and Susami-minami Interchange, yet offers more than a rest stop. Eat locally caught fish, buy fresh seafood, look toward Esuzaki from Susami Cafe, or take children to the Crab and Shrimp Aquarium on a rainy day. With more time, add the neighboring hot spring and RV park, Esuzaki, the Japanese Children's Song Garden, or Koibito Misaki. On the drive from Shirahama to Kushimoto, it brings together a family meal, toilets, activities, and an indoor option if the weather changes.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Two reasons to stop for food: seafood and inobuta pork

At Sokai, choose from a set meal of today's sashimi, the Special Seafood Luxury Bowl, a bowl of boiled whitebait over rice, sanma sushi, inobuta pork udon, or an inobuta grilled-meat rice bowl. If time is short, the cafe has bread and Susamichi pudding; for shopping, look for dried fish, rocky-shore seaweed, and lettuce sauce. The station lets you enjoy both the coastal and the distinctly Susami flavors at a meal or take them home.

02

An aquarium on the same site makes family plans easier

The Susami Municipal Crab and Shrimp Aquarium is a small destination right beside the roadside station. On sunny days, try the observation deck or lawn; in rain or intense heat, head inside the aquarium. It gives families something to do beyond a meal, and a brief visit can be memorable for children who love crabs and shrimp.

03

A convenient base between Shirahama and Kushimoto

Close to Susami-minami Interchange, the station is a place to pause between Shirahama and Kushimoto. Add short visits to Esuzaki, the Japanese Children's Song Garden, or Koibito Misaki, or continue to Kushimoto Marine Park for more time with marine life. In the evening, Susami Night Market, Nozomi no Yu, and the RV park offer ways to leave more room in the itinerary than a quick pass-through.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Families with children; travel days on National Route 42

A family lunch break between Shirahama and Kushimoto

Use the toilets first, eat seafood or inobuta pork at Sokai, then visit the aquarium or cafe. That makes the stop more than a meal. The indoor aquarium is especially useful on a hot or rainy day.

Michi-no-Eki Susami → Sokai / Susami Cafe → Crab and Shrimp Aquarium

Last admission to the aquarium is 16:20. If lunch runs late, consider the aquarium first.

Couples; RV park users; late-afternoon arrivals

Fresh fish and a hot spring for a short southern Wakayama evening

Browse the fish at Karekinada Fresh Fish Shop, grill seafood or inobuta pork at Susami Night Market, then look out to sea from Nozomi no Yu. It gives the evening more of a southern Wakayama feel than going straight to the hotel.

Fresh fish shop → Susami Night Market → Nozomi no Yu / RV park

The fish shop opens only on certain days, and the night market also follows a weekly schedule. Allow for changes caused by bad weather or poor catches.

Preschoolers; primary-school children; rainy drives between Shirahama and Kushimoto

Keep a rainy day simple at the station and aquarium

Instead of adding more outdoor sightseeing, stay close to the restaurant, cafe, shops, and aquarium. Children can enjoy spotting shrimp and crabs, while parents can handle toilets, meals, and shopping within a short distance.

Parking → toilets → aquarium → cafe / shopping

The aquarium is small, so it works best paired with a meal or shopping rather than as a long visit on its own.

Families seeking sea views; short walks; photography

On a fine day, add Esuzaki and the Japanese Children's Song Garden

Look toward Esuzaki from the station's observation deck, then continue to the Japanese Children's Song Garden or Esuzaki if time allows. Even a short walk after eating makes Susami feel like a place you visited, rather than one you drove through.

Michi-no-Eki Susami → Japanese Children's Song Garden → Esuzaki

The coast can be windy. Keep walks short when the summer sun or winter wind is strong.

Primary-school children and older; aquarium fans; half-day trips

Continue to Kushimoto for more marine life

After seeing crustaceans at the Crab and Shrimp Aquarium, head to Kushimoto Marine Park to compare small exhibits with a larger underwater viewing experience. A joint admission ticket has also been advertised, making this a natural pairing for aquarium-loving families.

Crab and Shrimp Aquarium → Kushimoto Marine Park

Travel time increases if you continue toward Kushimoto. Work backward from the afternoon's last admission time.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

The toilets, cafe, and indoor aquarium are close together. This is not a place for a long outdoor play session, so locate nursing and diaper-changing facilities first and keep the stop short.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

See small creatures at the aquarium, then head to the cafe or bakery. The visit need not be long, making it a good change of pace before or after a meal.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Shrimp, crabs, horseshoe crabs, and giant isopods can be exciting even by name. The aquarium is a useful rainy-day destination for this age group.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Combine observing aquarium creatures with Kushimoto Marine Park or Esuzaki. A choice between seafood and inobuta pork for lunch also makes a half-day route easier.

Check the aquarium's last admission first

If you arrive in the late afternoon, visit the aquarium before eating to avoid missing it.

Eat outside the lunch peak

Sokai can draw a lunch crowd, so keep the cafe, bread, or shopping as alternatives.

Consider wind and sun for outdoor walks

Esuzaki and the seafront are pleasant, but midsummer sun and winter wind can change how comfortable they feel.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Close to the interchange for an easy break

The station is listed about 800 m south of Susami-minami Interchange and is convenient for returning to National Route 42. It makes it easy to take a manageable break between Shirahama and Kushimoto, with enough time for a meal if desired.

  2. 2
Use the toilets and cafe nearby

The outdoor toilets are listed as open 24 hours. Using them first, then visiting the cafe or shops, helps avoid keeping companions waiting.

  3. 3
Pick one way to enjoy seafood

Sokai, the fish shop, and the night market offer different experiences. Choosing lunch, something to take away, or dinner as your priority makes the stop simpler.

  4. 4
    Plan around hot-spring admission times

Nozomi no Yu is inside the adjoining hotel and is listed for day visitors. Fees and admission hours may change, so check current information before an evening visit.

Event

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Lawn area

An outdoor venue for events such as hula dance shows with the sea as a backdrop. Fine weather is appealing, but consider the sun and wind when deciding how long to stay.

Susami Night Market

A food option Thursday through Sunday and on public holidays. On days when seafood or inobuta barbecue appeals, the station becomes a dinner destination.

Aquarium

Seasonal exhibitions and hands-on activity announcements may appear. Check current events when planning an indoor stop on a rainy or hot day.

RV park

A stay area with nine pitches, generally requiring reservations. Pair it with the hot spring, night market, and morning cafe as a base for a southern Wakayama drive.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The aquarium makes rainy-day plans easier

Coastal sightseeing in southern Wakayama depends on the weather, but Michi-no-Eki Susami has an indoor aquarium on the same site. Its small, focused collection of shrimp and crabs is different from a large theme park. Add it before or after a meal or shopping for a family change of pace.

Enjoy seafood differently at the restaurant and fish shop

For a meal, try sashimi or the luxury seafood bowl at Sokai; for something to take away, browse the fish shop or shopping area. Fish landed that morning depend on weather and the catch, so enjoy what is available that day rather than counting on one species.

The station changes character from day to evening

By day, there are the restaurant, cafe, aquarium, and observation deck. Later, Susami Night Market, the hot spring, and RV park become the main options. The station can fit a meal, an overnight stay, or an evening stop as well as a break on the way between Shirahama and Kushimoto.

Children can enjoy the aquarium while adults focus on food and the hot spring

When family members want different things, the station and adjoining facilities give them nearby choices. Children can watch sea creatures, adults can browse fresh fish or rest with a sea view, and the visit can end at the hot spring instead of remaining a brief stop.

For an overnight stay or late stop, choose your parking spot thoughtfully

The site has an RV park and 24-hour toilets, while large vehicles may come and go at night and the quietness varies by parking position. For an overnight stay, consider the RV park; for a short break, consider both toilet access and noise when choosing where to stop.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The roadside station is listed as open 9:00–18:00, closing at 17:00 from December through February. Hours differ by business, so check current details for the restaurant, aquarium, or hot spring you plan to visit.
  • The Kinki Regional Development Bureau lists parking for 9 large vehicles and 123 cars. The official facility guide separately lists a first lot with 9 large-vehicle, 44 car, 2 kei-car-only, and 1 EV-only spaces, and a second lot with 69 car spaces. The car totals in these listings differ; check the lot layout on arrival.
  • Sokai is generally listed as open 11:00–17:00, with last orders at 16:30. Winter hours may be shorter and temporary changes occur, so check before a late-afternoon arrival.
  • Karekinada Fresh Fish Shop is generally listed as open Thursday through Sunday and public holidays, 10:00–16:00. It may be closed Monday through Wednesday or when bad weather or poor catches intervene.
  • The Crab and Shrimp Aquarium is listed as open 9:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:20. Its official notices cover temporary closures and seasonal exhibitions.
  • Nozomi no Yu is a hot spring inside the adjoining hotel and is listed for day visitors. A price revision was noted for April 2026, so check the current fee before going.
  • The station is listed about 800 m south of Susami-minami Interchange and about a five-minute walk from JR Esumi Station. It is well placed for a stop between Shirahama and Kushimoto.
  • Midsummer sun and winter wind can change the feel of the coastal lawn and Esuzaki area. Leave room to shorten outdoor walks.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make seafood the main event

Today's sashimi set meal / Special Seafood Luxury Bowl / boiled whitebait rice bowl

For a meal that marks your southern Wakayama drive, go to Sokai. Dishes that change with deliveries are a chance to try the day's fish.

Lunch and long holidays can be busy, and dishes may sell out by evening, so arrive early if possible.

Choose a Susami specialty

Inobuta grilled-meat rice bowl / inobuta pork udon / inobuta steamed bun

These are options for tasting Susami beyond seafood, and useful when children prefer meat to fish. Inobuta is the local wild-boar-and-pig crossbreed.

Availability differs by business and season. Check updated menus if you want a particular item.

Keep it light

Susami Cafe / freshly baked bread / Susamichi pudding

The cafe is handy in the morning or between meals. A seat or terrace with a view of Esuzaki can make even a brief break feel special.

Bread and sweets selections change during the day.

Take something away

Sanma sushi / dried local fish / rocky-shore seaweed / lettuce sauce

For food to eat in the car or at your lodging, browse the shopping area. There are both light, easy-to-carry gifts and local foods for the table at home.

Consider travel time and cooling when buying refrigerated or frozen goods.

Browse fresh fish

Karekinada Fresh Fish Shop / locally caught fish landed that morning

Fish lovers may enjoy the shop as much as the restaurant. Buying a whole fish or asking about cuts gives the visit a market feel.

Opening is generally Thursday through Sunday and public holidays. The shop may close in bad weather or when catches are poor.

Make an evening of it

Susami Night Market / seafood barbecue / inobuta pork

For a late-afternoon arrival, think of this as barbecue time by the sea rather than a conventional restaurant meal. Pair it with the hot spring or RV park to end the day.

Check opening days and last orders before setting out. Strong winds can also affect the outdoor experience.
