How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Check when the farm shop closes

The local farm shop is generally open 9:30–16:00. If shopping is your goal, stop before late afternoon.

To buy
Pickled plums, citrus and local sushi

Choose separately between Wakayama foods to take away and foods that are easy to eat in the car or by the sea.

To eat
A light meal of farm-shop bento or sushi

Think of this as a place for a quick bite during a short break, rather than a station built around a restaurant.

To step outside
Blue Beach Nachi or Fudarakusanji Temple

The sea and a World Heritage temple are both within walking distance.

Heading to Nachisan
Get your bearings at the information center

Before visiting Daimonzaka, Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and Nachi Falls, decide how far you want to walk and where to park.

Looking for a hot spring
Nishiki-no-Yu is closed

If bathing is part of your itinerary, check a separate bath in Katsuura Onsen or the surrounding area.

Fumino’s shopping route

While the hot spring is closed, make the farm shop, sea and preparations for Kumano the highlights.

Michi-no-Eki Nachi is not a large station for a long stay. Its strengths show when you quickly decide what to buy, where to walk and how to reach Nachisan.

1

Visit the farm shop first

It generally closes at 16:00, so go straight to the shelves if you want pickled plums or local sushi.

2

Add a brief look at the sea

Blue Beach Nachi is behind the station, close enough for a change of scene during a break.

3

Choose your Nachisan route by walking distance

Walking Daimonzaka and driving up will tire your companions in very different ways.

4

Go to the port for tuna

For a substantial meal, continue to Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Nachi brings National Route 42, JR Nachi Station, Blue Beach Nachi and Fudarakusanji Temple close together. It is not a place to linger in a large food court. Browse pickled plums (umeboshi), local vegetables, local sushi, tuna and processed fish at the farm shop; get a sense of distances to Nachisan at the Kumano Nachi World Heritage Information Center; glance at the sea; then set off. This short circuit feels distinctly Nachikatsuura. Nishiki-no-Yu, the on-site hot spring bath, is currently closed, so the station works better as a stop to eat, shop, see the sea and rest before or after visiting Kumano than as a bathing destination. Editor Fumino Yakumo recommends it as a modest stop where you can sample Nachikatsuura flavors and prepare for a pilgrimage in one visit.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The station, sea and gateway to Kumano pilgrimage meet in one place

Directly connected to JR Nachi Station and easy to reach from National Route 42, the roadside station has Blue Beach Nachi behind the railway station building. The World Heritage Information Center and Fudarakusanji Temple are nearby, making this a useful place to choose your next Nachikatsuura stop as well as to rest.

02

Find Nachikatsuura flavors at the farm shop

The farm shop closes around 16:00, making it better for shopping from morning to early afternoon than for a late lunch. Browse pickled plums, local vegetables, citrus, local sushi, tuna and processed fish, then choose something to eat in the car, by the sea or at your accommodation.

03

A useful rest stop even while Nishiki-no-Yu is closed

Nishiki-no-Yu on the second floor is currently closed. A trip planned around the bath may disappoint, but the 24-hour toilets, tourist information, farm shop and seaside change of scene are still available. For now, make preparations and a small taste of the area the focus of your stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A first visit to Nachisan

Prepare before Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and Nachi Falls

Make a short circuit of the toilets, drinks, farm shop and World Heritage Information Center. Decide whether to walk Daimonzaka or drive up to the parking area below the shrine office before leaving; it will make Nachisan easier to navigate.

Michi-no-Eki Nachi → Daimonzaka or Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine → Nachi Falls.

Nachisan has many steps and slopes. With children or older companions, decide on parking and walking distance in advance.

A 30-minute break on National Route 42

See the sea, shop at the farm stand and enjoy a short stop

Because this is a small station, a simple circuit of the toilets, farm shop and a glimpse of the sea works well. Choose some pickled plums, citrus or local sushi and even a short break will feel like a visit to Nachikatsuura.

Park → farm shop → look out over Blue Beach Nachi → depart.

During the summer swimming season, parking and traffic conditions around the beach change.

A short stroll for adults

Walk to Fudarakusanji Temple for a little history

Fudarakusanji Temple is about a three-minute walk from JR Nachi Station. Alongside a stop at the farm shop, learn about Fudaraku tokai, the historic sea voyage undertaken as a Buddhist religious practice, and deepen your sense of arriving at the gateway to Kumano.

Michi-no-Eki Nachi → Fudarakusanji Temple → shop at the farm stand.

Temple visiting hours are generally 8:30–16:00. In the late afternoon, both it and the farm shop may already be closed.

Families, swimming and a break by the water

Make Blue Beach Nachi the focus in summer

Blue Beach Nachi’s 2026 swimming season ran from July 18 to August 23. Because the beach is close to the station, a beach day can start with the toilets and drinks, followed by a farm-shop stop on the way back.

Michi-no-Eki Nachi → Blue Beach Nachi → farm shop or Katsuura Onsen area.

For swimming hours, parking charges and bad-weather arrangements, follow the latest tourism association and town notices.

A day for a proper tuna meal

Continue to Katsuura fishing port for a fuller meal

Michi-no-Eki Nachi is well suited to a small taste and a little shopping. If lunch is your main event, pick up pickled plums or tourist information here, then head to Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market for more of Nachikatsuura’s food.

Michi-no-Eki Nachi → Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market → Kii-Katsuura hot spring district.

Nigiwai Market is generally closed Tuesdays. Check its hours and parking before going.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Up to 1 year
★★★☆☆

Good for the toilets, brief shopping and a break in the car. If going on to the sea or Nachisan, plan around heat and carrying your child.

The station itself is not a place for extended play, so a short visit works best.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A brief stop at the farm shop and shore can work well. Daimonzaka and Nachisan have many steps; plan to carry young children.

On a summer beach day, plan changes of clothes, drinks and shade in advance.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Adding Blue Beach Nachi or Fudarakusanji Temple makes the stop more memorable than a simple break.

Seeing photographs and exhibits at the World Heritage Information Center before Nachisan can help explain the next part of the journey.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

The sea, Fudaraku tokai (a historic Buddhist sea voyage) and Nachi Falls open up topics that connect history and nature in a short time.

For a walk on Daimonzaka, prioritize suitable shoes and drinks. Meals need not be limited to the roadside station.

Do not expect much playground equipment at the station

For children, extend the stop to Blue Beach Nachi, Fudarakusanji Temple or Nachisan.

Plan the beach route before a summer visit

During swimming season, check the tourism association’s guidance on parking, showers, changing rooms and lockers.

Walking demands vary widely at Nachisan

Walking Daimonzaka and driving up involve very different levels of effort.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Use the toilets and tourist information at the station

Before heading to Nachisan, decide how far to walk and where to park.

  2. 2
    Keep the farm-shop visit short

Focus on easy-to-carry items such as pickled plums and citrus to avoid fatigue.

  3. 3
    Check whether Nishiki-no-Yu has reopened

It is currently closed, so consider a separate bath in the Katsuura Onsen area.

Spaces used for events

Blue Beach Nachi

During the summer swimming season, the beach becomes the main attraction nearby. On a beach day, plan for parking and road congestion.

Kumano Nachi World Heritage Information Center

Before visiting Nachisan, Daimonzaka or Fudarakusanji Temple, use the exhibits and brochures to gauge distances.

Local farm shop

Seasonal vegetables, citrus, pickled plums and local sushi make this a worthwhile food stop.

In front of JR Nachi Station

An unusual roadside station accessible by rail as well as by car. The sea, temple and bus connections are all nearby.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Its small size rewards a clear plan

Travelers describe this as a small station in front of JR Nachi Station. Instead of expecting the range of a large station or a restaurant, focus on the farm shop, tourist information, toilets and a quick look at the sea.

Shop from morning to early afternoon

Reviewers often mention pickled plums, produce, local sushi, tuna trimmings and processed fish. Some also warn that the shop closes early, so arrive before late afternoon if you want to shop.

Plan around the hot spring closure

Older information often highlights Nishiki-no-Yu, but the town and tourism sites say it is currently closed. Make a bath in the Katsuura Onsen area a separate option instead of planning to bathe here.

Swimming season changes the nature of this stop

Blue Beach Nachi is next to JR Nachi Station and draws swimmers in summer. A beach day and an ordinary pilgrimage day call for different parking, visit lengths and things to bring.

Get oriented before heading to Nachisan

Nachi Falls and Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine are major destinations, but the walking distance and parking choice shape the visit. Use the information center, then decide between nearby Fudarakusanji Temple on foot and Nachisan by car.

For a bigger meal, continue beyond the station

Have a light bite and shop at the station; for a fuller meal, continue to Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market. On some days this gives you more room to enjoy Nachikatsuura tuna and the port’s food.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Nishiki-no-Yu is currently closed. For a hot spring visit, arrange a separate bath in Katsuura Onsen or the surrounding area.
  • The farm shop is generally open 9:30–16:00. For pickled plums, local sushi and produce, morning to early afternoon works best.
  • The station connects directly to JR Nachi Station, making it an unusual roadside stop that can also be used by rail and bus travelers.
  • Blue Beach Nachi gets busier in the summer swimming season. Check parking charges, swimming hours and bad-weather arrangements.
  • Walking demands vary at Nachisan. Decide whether to walk Daimonzaka or drive up below the shrine office to suit your companions.
  • If a meal is your main goal, continue to Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market for a fuller tuna experience.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

A takeaway to look for at the farm shop

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Morning shopping

Pickled plums, citrus and local vegetables

The farm shop is at its best while the stalls are active. If you stop before a Kumano pilgrimage, choose separately what travels well in the car and what you will eat at your accommodation.

The farm shop generally closes at 16:00. Late arrivals may find a limited selection or a closed shop.

Light lunch

Local sushi and bento

This suits a short break for a taste of the area rather than a long, seated lunch. On a day at the beach or before heading to Nachisan, choose something easy to eat.

A taste of Nachikatsuura

Tuna and processed fish

If fresh tuna is your main goal, you could continue to Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market. At the roadside station, look for processed fish that is easy to take along.

Something sweet and a drink

Citrus and drinks

On a summer visit to Blue Beach Nachi or Daimonzaka, get a drink and a light sweet snack before setting out.

When it is crowded

Shop briefly at the station / eat at Katsuura port

If the small farm shop feels crowded or you want a substantial meal, stop here for the toilets and shopping, then continue to Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market.
