Fumino’s notes from plum country

Pause and learn before choosing plums; this is a shopping stop rather than a meal stop.

Fumino Tachibana sees this station as the gateway to a Minabe plum trip. Take a break at the parking area and toilets, learn about Nanko-ume in the exhibits, then choose umeboshi and processed plum products on the third floor. Instead of a long meal here, decide whether to continue to the grove, sea, or onsen; that makes even a short visit richer.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Minabe Ume Promotion Center stands on National Route 424 near the Minabe Interchange of the Hanwa Expressway. In one stop, you can see exhibits on the history of plums and a plum information area, then shop for umeboshi (pickled plums) and other plum products. Use the parking and toilets for a break, visit the free exhibits to learn about Nanko-ume, and browse the third-floor Ume-no-Eki Minabe Kawamura for umeboshi, processed plum products, Binchotan charcoal, and plum soft-serve ice cream. For a half-day drive, add Minabe Plum Grove in early spring, Senri Beach in summer, or Tsuru-no-Yu Onsen before heading home. For navigation, the official address is 和歌山県日高郡みなべ町谷口538-1.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Learn about Minabe plums before buying them

The first floor covers Minabe Town history; the second is a plum information area. See a panorama of the plum groves, the science of umeboshi, plum history, and the Minabe-Tanabe Ume System, a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. It gives souvenir shopping more context than a taste comparison alone.

02

Choose from a plum-filled selection on the third floor

Ume-no-Eki Minabe Kawamura sells umeboshi, processed plum products, Binchotan charcoal, vegetables, fruit, and plum soft-serve ice cream. This is better suited to a short shopping and sweets stop than to a full lunch.

03

Convenient parking and toilets near the interchange

The center is advertised as about a two-minute drive from Minabe Interchange. Parking and toilets are available 24 hours. Exhibits and shopping generally run from 9:00 to 17:00, so use an early-morning or late-night stop for a rest and visit in daytime for plum shopping.

04

Add a plum grove, coast, or onsen

Minabe Plum Grove is a short drive from the station. Toward the sea is Senri Beach, part of the coastal Kumano Kodo route; inland is Tsuru-no-Yu Onsen. Adding one stop to suit the season gives the trip a clear shape.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short stop before or after Minabe Interchange

Learn about plums and choose souvenirs in 30 minutes

Park, use the toilets, briefly explore the first- and second-floor exhibits, then head to the third floor. Plum history and local growing traditions can help you choose between shiso-pickled and honey-flavored umeboshi, plum syrup, and plum sweets.

Parking → toilets → first- and second-floor exhibits → third-floor shop → depart

Entry to the exhibition rooms is generally until 16:30, and the building closes at 17:00. Allow shopping time first if you arrive late.

A plum blossom drive from late January to early March

Stop before or after Minabe Plum Grove

During its open season, a visit to Minabe Plum Grove links the real blossom landscape with the station’s panoramic exhibit and plum history. Walking takes time and parking has a fee, so a shorter toilet and shopping stop at the station leaves more room in the day.

Roadside station → Minabe Plum Grove → souvenirs at the station or nearby

Flowering, opening dates, traffic restrictions, and parking change each year. Check official updates during blossom season.

An indoor stop with children or on a rainy day

Add hands-on activities at Kishu Umeboshi-kan

After an overview of plums at the station, head to Kishu Umeboshi-kan for a factory tour and activities such as making umeboshi or plum juice. Adding it gives you more indoor time than the station alone.

Roadside station → Kishu Umeboshi-kan → coast or return journey

Check activity reservations and dates, and factory operating days. The two places have similar opening hours, so starting in the morning helps.

A clear late afternoon with a little Kumano Kodo and coastal scenery

Add time by the sea at Senri Beach

After buying plum souvenirs, head to Senri Beach to see another side of Minabe. Known as the Kumano Kodo section that follows the shore, it is also a loggerhead turtle nesting site. Treat a summer night turtle observation as a separate, regulated activity.

Roadside station → Senri Beach → break along the coast

Turtle observation requires an application for permission and has a participant limit. Even for a daytime walk, consider heat, wind, high waves, and footing.

A relaxed return trip for adults

Finish with an inland onsen

After learning about and buying plums, visit Tsuru-no-Yu Onsen in the hills. Its yellow-brown, iron-rich water offers a rest after walking in the plum grove or by the sea. Arrange a meal at the onsen or another nearby place rather than relying on the station for lunch.

Roadside station → Tsuru-no-Yu Onsen → return journey

Check official information on day-bathing hours, closure days, and overnight stays. Closures at the onsen and station can coincide around Tuesday.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1
★★★☆☆

Best for a toilet stop and brief shopping, helping reset the car journey rather than a long stay.

Keep it short: toilets, a cool break inside, then souvenirs on the third floor. Check signs on site for nursing and changing facilities.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Plum soft-serve or exhibit videos can offer a brief change of pace; this is not a playground stop.

Keep young children close around the product shelves. If they need more to do, plan an activity at Kishu Umeboshi-kan or a coastal walk.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Plum models and science displays can make this more engaging than shopping alone.

Talk about different umeboshi flavors or plum juice to involve children in choosing souvenirs.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Plum history, terrain, the agricultural heritage system, and conservation at Senri Beach can extend the learning.

Add Minabe Plum Grove, Kishu Umeboshi-kan, or Senri Beach for a stop combining social studies and nature observation.

Minabe Plum Grove: 2026 season

The announced 2026 opening period was January 31 to March 1. Flowering can change the dates, so follow official updates when planning an early-spring trip.

Loggerhead turtle observation at Senri Beach

The announced 2026 observation period was June 29 to August 7. Observation requires an application for permission and has a participant limit. Plan a beach walk and nighttime observation separately.

Kinki roadside station notices

A notice in November 2025 reported a temporary parking closure. Check the official portal for work and other temporary changes.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A plum museum-style station, not a general farm market

Official and tourism information describes history exhibits on the first floor, plum information on the second, and a shop on the third. Travel reviews also suggest the sales area focuses on plums, which may differ from expectations of a general produce market.

A short stop for plum soft-serve and shopping, rather than a dining hall

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau lists no restaurant or snack bar and notes plum soft-serve among shop offerings. Plan a shopping and sweets break rather than an entire lunch here.

Parking and toilets are open 24 hours; visit the shop by day

Official sources generally list 9:00–17:00 for the facility and admission to exhibition rooms until 16:30. Parking, toilets, and the public telephone are available 24 hours. Use early or late stops for a break and daytime for exhibits and shopping.

A stay can be under an hour, or longer if you explore the exhibits

Travel reviews include short visits, and the time needed depends on how thoroughly you see the exhibits and shop. On a day with Minabe Plum Grove or Kishu Umeboshi-kan, keeping the station visit short helps the itinerary.

Minabe Plum Grove adds meaning in blossom season

During the early-spring opening, the grove’s hours, admission and parking fees, and events can change. Seeing the plum background at the station before the grove adds an understanding of the growing region to the blossoms.

Senri Beach is scenic, with conservation rules at night in summer

Senri Beach is a coastal Kumano Kodo section and a loggerhead turtle nesting site. Observation requires an application for permission and has a participant limit, so a casual evening walk and nighttime observation need separate plans.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The facility generally opens 9:00–17:00, with entry to exhibition rooms until 16:30. Shop on the third floor first if you arrive near closing.
  • Usual closure is Tuesday, or the next day if Tuesday is a holiday, plus December 29–31. February is listed as open daily.
  • Closure dates changed in August 2026. Check the latest notice before a summer-holiday visit.
  • Official listings show no restaurant or snack bar. Plan lunch at a nearby restaurant, around Kishu Umeboshi-kan, or at an onsen facility.
  • Published parking figures vary. The regional road authority lists 51 spaces in total, including four for large vehicles. Check official notices for peak-period changes or construction.
  • Minabe Plum Grove parking, fees, traffic restrictions, and events change during its open season. Check grove information first when it is your main destination.
  • Loggerhead turtle observation at Senri Beach requires an application for permission. Plan it separately from a daytime beach walk; do not enter the beach at night without planning.
  • If buying many umeboshi or other plum products, consider the journey home, heat inside the car, and carrying liquids or breakable items.

What would you like to eat?

The main purchases

Nanko-ume umeboshi and processed plum products

Choose by salt level, sweetness, everyday use, or gifts. Seeing the exhibits first makes the growing region easier to understand.

A sweet treat for the drive

Plum soft-serve ice cream

A good option for a short break rather than lunch. Check availability in store.

Take something home for the table

Plum syrup, plum liqueur, plum sweets, vegetables, and fruit

For a long trip home, favor shelf-stable items and consider a cooler for seasonal fresh produce.

A distinctly Minabe local product

Kishu Binchotan charcoal

Another local specialty alongside plums. Choose according to its intended use, such as cooking, deodorizing, or gifting.

When you want lunch

Restaurants outside the station, around Kishu Umeboshi-kan, or at onsen facilities

Official listings show no restaurant or snack bar. If your visit spans lunchtime, make the station a shopping break and eat elsewhere.
