Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Ryujin is the Woody Plaza Mokuzokukan roadside station on National Route 371 in Ryujin Village, Tanabe City, at the start of the Koya-Ryujin Skyline toward Mount Koya. The dragon-inspired wooden building, with its many large timber columns, is an attraction in itself. Inside are Ryujin timber crafts, bamboo work, log-grown dried shiitake mushrooms, pickled plums, barley miso, and other farm and processed products. The Kinki Regional Development Bureau recommends the restaurant’s wild boar rice bowl and amago trout udon. The shop normally opens 9:00–16:00 and the restaurant 10:00–15:00. The clear Hidaka River is nearby, and Ryujin Onsen is about two minutes away by car. Toilets, parking, and a public telephone are available 24 hours, making this a practical stop for toilets, lunch, and shopping before or after the mountain road between Mount Koya and Ryujin Onsen.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Woody Plaza Mokuzokukan: a building worth the stop

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau names the dragon-inspired wooden building as its first highlight. Evoking the dragon in Ryujin Village’s name, it uses many large timber columns. The woodcraft exhibition room displays Ryujin timber tables, chairs, and shelves, as well as bamboo crafts. Even on a ten-minute break, the scent of wood and the towering columns convey the character of this forestry village.

02

Plan your arrival around lunch

The shop opens 9:00–16:00 and the restaurant 10:00–15:00; the Ryujin Tourism Association lists the restaurant’s last order at 14:30. The Kinki Regional Development Bureau recommends the wild boar rice bowl and amago trout udon, noodles topped with freshwater trout. A drive on the Koya-Ryujin Skyline takes about an hour on either side, so work backward from the last-order time if you plan to eat here.

03

About two minutes by car to Ryujin Onsen: pause before or after your bath

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau puts Ryujin Onsen about two minutes away by car. Known as one of Japan’s “three beauty hot springs,” it is close enough to pair with shopping and a toilet stop before a bath, or souvenir shopping afterward.

04

Toilets, parking, and a public telephone, 24 hours a day

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau explicitly lists the toilets, parking, and public telephone as available 24 hours a day. Weather can change travel times on the mountain road, and roadside stations are spaced apart. These facilities provide a useful rest stop through Ryujin Village even when the shop and restaurant are closed.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive on the Koya-Ryujin Skyline

A break midway between Mount Koya and Ryujin Onsen

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau gives about 60 minutes from Nanki-Tanabe Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway toward Mount Koya, and about 60 minutes from Mount Koya via the Koya-Ryujin Skyline toward Ryujin. Coming from either direction, this stop breaks up an hour-long mountain drive. Use it for toilets, drinks, and souvenirs before continuing.

Nanki-Tanabe Interchange area ↔ Michi-no-Eki Ryujin ↔ Koya-Ryujin Skyline and Mount Koya area.

Wednesday is the usual closed day. Weather and road conditions can change mountain-road travel times.

A day heading to Ryujin Onsen

Shop and use the toilets before the hot springs

Ryujin Onsen is listed as about two minutes away by car. Looking at the Mokuzokukan’s woodcraft, dried shiitake, pickled plums, and barley miso before your bath leaves more time afterward for driving or onward travel. The shop closes at 16:00, so the order of stops matters if you plan an evening bath.

Michi-no-Eki Ryujin → Ryujin Onsen → overnight stay or return trip.

Check the hot spring facility separately for its hours, closed days, and last admission.

A short stop for food and shopping

Take home a woodcraft item from a forestry village

The Ryujin Tourism Association lists local woodcraft, bamboo work, farm products, souvenirs, and processed foods. From wooden tables, chairs, and shelves to smaller items, the range shows how Ryujin timber is used. It is a good stop when you want a souvenir other than food.

Parking → woodcraft exhibition room → souvenir corner → 24-hour toilets.

Stock and selection change with the season. Plan how to transport any large woodcraft item.

A break with preschool or elementary-school children

With children, pair this stop with the Hidaka River or hot springs

The building mainly contains a shop, restaurant, woodcraft display, and tourist information; it has no large play area. Use the toilets and eat first, then head toward the nearby Hidaka River or Ryujin Onsen if the weather is good. On a rainy day, focus on the building, crafts, food, and shopping indoors. This makes the family schedule easier to manage.

Michi-no-Eki Ryujin → along the Hidaka River / toward Ryujin Onsen.

Take care entering and leaving the parking area beside the national road. Decide whether to approach the river based on that day’s water level and weather.

A day for checking mountain-road and seasonal information

Ask tourist information about current conditions in Ryujin Village

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau says a tourist concierge provides local sightseeing and specialty-product information. Mountain and forest-road closures, as well as seasonal event information, can change in Ryujin Village. If your next destination is undecided, ask here before continuing.

Michi-no-Eki Ryujin (tourist information) → your chosen destination.

Tourist information is available during business hours. On Wednesdays and outside opening hours, check official sites or tourism association notices.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Parking capacity differs between listings

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau and Wakayama’s official tourism site list 45 standard-car spaces. The national Michi-no-Eki association lists three large-vehicle spaces and 25 standard-car spaces, including one accessible space. The shared parking figure here is 45 cars, but the published counts differ. If arriving in a large vehicle or during a busy period, allow for limited space.

Hours may change in busy periods

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau says the shop and restaurant may extend hours in busy periods and that the station may open on an otherwise closed day. The national Michi-no-Eki association gives Golden Week, Obon, and autumn foliage season as examples of extended hours. Check current hours when visiting during the Koya-Ryujin Skyline’s foliage season.

The building and old tree are attractions in their own right

Wakayama’s official tourism site highlights the dragon-inspired building and its Ryujin timber, as well as a log-built suspension bridge it describes as the only one of its kind in Kinki, a hemlock estimated to be more than 350 years old, the café and dining corner, and the woodcraft exhibition room. Allow time to look around the building as well as the shop.

Ryujin Onsen pairs naturally with this stop

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau puts Ryujin Onsen about two minutes away by car and describes its clear sodium bicarbonate water as one of Japan’s “three beauty hot springs.” Planning this stop before or after the onsen makes the day easier to organize.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Wild boar rice bowl / amago trout udon

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau recommends both dishes. The wild boar rice bowl and freshwater-trout udon are distinctly local mountain fare.

The selection of farm and processed products changes with season and deliveries.

Local character

A way to take home something from Ryujin Village other than food. See the uses of the timber in the woodcraft exhibition room before choosing.

For large products such as tables or shelves, plan how to take them home.

Outside opening hours

24-hour toilets, parking, and public telephone

When the shop and restaurant are closed, use the stop for its rest facilities.

At night, visibility and road surfaces on the mountain route can change. Keep the stop brief.
