Lunch
Make Tajima beef the centerpiece

Meal service is generally until 15:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on weekends and public holidays. Last orders are earlier, so arrive with time to spare if you are coming for lunch.

Shopping
Fresh meat, prepared foods and highland vegetables

Take home Tajima beef cuts, frozen sugoman buns and croquettes, and vegetables and rice grown in Muraoka. Sugoman is a local savory beef bun.

A break
A useful stop on Route 9

On the way to Kinosaki or Kasumi, Yumura Onsen or the Yoka-Hyonosen Interchange, you can combine parking, toilets and a meal in one stop.

A side trip
Continue to waterfalls, an onsen or the highlands

For a short detour, try Muraoka Onsen or Saruo Falls. With half a day, add the Tajima Kogen Botanical Garden or the Museum for Wood Culture.

Sakurako's route note

A stop that makes it easy to rearrange plans around a meal

Muraoka Farm Garden is not a sprawling park-style roadside station for a long stay. Park, use the toilets, decide whether to eat or buy Tajima beef, then head to a waterfall or an onsen. If you are behind schedule, choose the shop and coffee; if you have more time, combine lunch with Saruo Falls; if you are tired, head to Muraoka Onsen. Quick choices make this a satisfying Route 9 stop.

Weekdays

Meal hours are shorter, so shopping and café service may be more reliable than a late lunch.

Weekends and holidays

Allow time around noon if you want a Tajima beef dish. After eating, continue to a waterfall or onsen to round out the day.

Winter

Snow and closures affect the nearby highlands and parks. Take a break here, then decide whether to go up into the mountains or stay along the main road for an onsen.

Highlights

Muraoka Farm Garden sits on Route 9 toward Kinosaki, Kasumi and Yumura. Here you can find Tajima beef meals and fresh cuts, local vegetables and souvenirs from Kami Town together. On weekdays, plan a shorter stop around the shop and restaurant hours; on weekends, make a Tajima beef lunch the main event. With convenient parking and toilets and a nearby tourist information office, it is a useful break before heading to Saruo Falls, Muraoka Onsen or the Uwano Highlands. Tajima beef is the local cattle breed associated with this area.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Eat Tajima beef and take some home

Alongside the restaurant there is a butcher counter, so you can try Tajima beef at lunch and take some home if you like it. Beef from cattle raised in Kami Town can be the focus of your visit.

02

Highland vegetables and traditional souvenirs

Shop for vegetables and rice from Muraoka's climate of warm days and cool nights, Mikata Dainagon large red beans, horse chestnut crackers and beef simmered in sweet soy sauce. These products offer a glimpse of local everyday life.

03

A starting point for mountain-side sightseeing

Go beyond the roadside station to Saruo Falls, Muraoka Onsen, Gotenyama Park and the Uwano Highlands. A Route 9 break can easily become a short walk or an onsen visit, a Japanese hot spring bath.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive west along Route 9 around lunchtime

Choose a Tajima beef lunch before heading to Kinosaki or Kasumi

Eating Tajima beef in Muraoka works well before heading toward the coast. The restaurant has a range of meat dishes, including steak, hamburg steak and katsudon, a breaded cutlet served over rice. After eating, browse the fresh cuts and prepared foods to make lunch and shopping one stop.

Yoka-Hyonosen Interchange area → Route 9 → Muraoka Farm Garden → Kasumi and Kinosaki area

Weekday meal service ends at 15:00. If you arrive late, it is easier to switch to the shop, café or takeaway options.

When children or other passengers are tired on the way to Yumura Onsen

For a short stop, refresh yourself with shopping and a toilet break

Parking, 24-hour toilets, a multipurpose toilet and a nursing room make this a useful rest stop even without a meal. Browse vegetables, rice, beef simmered in sweet soy sauce and croquettes at the produce stand for a small taste of Kami Town to take home.

Park → toilets → shop and produce stand → coffee or prepared foods

The shops generally close at 17:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on weekends and public holidays. Later in the day, plan mainly on the rest facilities.

Families wanting one nature stop after eating, or adults looking for a short walk

After lunch, add a little walking at Saruo Falls

From the car park, it is about a three-minute walk to the lower pool of Saruo Falls; stairs continue to the upper tier. After lunch at the roadside station, a short drive and a walk in the cool forest add a distinctly Muraoka stop to the day.

Muraoka Farm Garden → Saruo Falls

The stairs to the upper tier are steep. After rain or when it freezes in winter, you may prefer to stop at the lower tier.

On the way back from Hachikita, the highlands or Tajima

On a tiring day, finish at Muraoka Onsen

Muraoka Onsen along the main road is a day-use hot spring that fits well after hiking or skiing. Eat or shop at the roadside station first, then relax in the bath before getting back in the car.

Muraoka Farm Garden → Muraoka Onsen

Kami Town Tourism Navi lists 11:00–20:00 and says it is closed on Thursdays from May. If you plan to bathe, check the day's opening information first.

For a day of flowers, forest or architecture, or a family summer holiday

With half a day, head up to the Uwano Highlands

The Tajima Kogen Botanical Garden and Museum for Wood Culture connect Muraoka's food with highland nature. The garden has seasonal flowers and a large katsura tree; the museum is a nature learning facility designed by Tadao Ando. Make the roadside station your lunch and supply stop, then spend the afternoon in the highlands.

Muraoka Farm Garden → Tajima Kogen Botanical Garden / Museum for Wood Culture

Highland facilities are affected by winter hours, closures and snow. The garden is a good choice from spring to autumn; the museum may suit rainy or very hot days better.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 0–1
★★★★☆

A nursing room and multipurpose toilet make this a convenient rest stop

This is not a play area for a long stay; use it for nursing, diaper changes and a short shopping stop.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Good for meals and toilet breaks, with limited space for running around

If lunch may involve a long wait, keep the shop or takeaway as an alternative.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Tajima beef dishes or croquettes pair well with a walk to Saruo Falls after eating

The stairs to the upper tier are steep, so consider the weather and footing and stop at the lower tier if needed.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Add the Museum for Wood Culture or Tajima Kogen Botanical Garden for learning and outdoor time

The museum works well for summer holidays or rainy days; in fair spring or autumn weather, consider the garden or Gotenyama Park.

Nursing and diaper changes

The official facilities guide lists a nursing room and powder room.

Toilets

There is also a multipurpose toilet, useful during a long drive.

Outdoor play

For a longer outing, combine this station with Saruo Falls, Gotenyama Park or Tajima Kogen Botanical Garden.

Meals

For young children, consider the wait and whether a substantial meal suits them; croquettes or sweets offer alternatives.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Do not overload a weekend lunch stop

Many visitors come for lunch, but restaurant hours are fixed. On a busy day, leave room for the produce stand, butcher counter, coffee or croquettes so waiting does not disrupt your itinerary.

Shopping is more interesting if you look beyond meat

The official shop guide lists Yoshiba-chan products, Mikata Dainagon red beans, Muraoka rice and local vegetables alongside Tajima beef products. Many purchases here can become part of everyday meals at home.

On rainy or hot days, keep it short with the station and onsen

The nearby natural sights are appealing but waterfalls and highlands depend on the weather. On rainy days or tiring midsummer afternoons, eating and shopping here before Muraoka Onsen can save your energy.

In winter, narrow down accessible places first

Gotenyama Park is closed to entry during snowy periods, toilets at Saruo Falls have winter restrictions, and the botanical garden and Museum for Wood Culture change hours in winter. In winter, center plans on the station and the onsen along the main road.

Ask tourist information before choosing a detour

The Muraoka Tourism Association has an information service on or near the site, where you can find brochures and information on the Muraoka area. It is especially useful when you need current advice on footing at the falls, cherry blossoms or autumn leaves, and winter road conditions.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A substantial lunch

Tajima beef steak, hamburg steak and katsudon

Tajima beef is the main attraction here. If lunch is the reason for your stop, aim for before noon through the 13:00 hour, leaving time afterward for shopping or a nearby walk.

Menus may change without notice. Check current prices and availability on the menu at the restaurant.

A light break

Kami Blend coffee and sweets

If a full meal feels too much, Kami Blend coffee, introduced in July 2026, is convenient for a café or takeaway stop. Pair it with a sweet made with Mikata Dainagon large red beans for a brief taste of the region.

The sweets-set discount was advertised only through July 17, 2026 and has ended. Check current prices at the shop.

To take home

Tajima beef cuts, beef simmered in sweet soy sauce, sugoman buns and croquettes

If you can keep items cool, look at fresh meat and frozen products. Even without a meal, beef simmered in sweet soy sauce or croquettes can bring a taste of the trip home.

Choose chilled and frozen products with your journey time and a cooler bag in mind.

Farm produce stand

Muraoka vegetables, rice, Mikata Dainagon red beans and horse chestnut crackers

Muraoka's vegetables and rice, grown with marked day-to-night temperature changes, make shopping here about more than beef. A produce stand showing growers' names lets you take home something closer to everyday local cooking.

Stock varies with the season and deliveries. There may be more choice in the morning.

Enjoy it after returning home

Processed products and Muraoka rice available by mail order

The official online shop also lists Tajima beef simmered in sweet soy sauce, minced meat topping, dried beef and Muraoka rice. You can order a flavor you enjoyed here later.

Items may sell out; shipping fees apply, and chilled and frozen goods may be packed separately.
