Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Park and set out on foot around Miyazu

Shopping is only one way to use this station. Stop briefly in the ground level lot, or use the multistory lot and walk to the town center or pier. A sightseeing boat can take you toward Amanohashidate. Having parking, toilets and an information desk in one place makes it easier to get your bearings on a first visit to Miyazu.

02

Seafood and farm produce in one place

Miyazu Magokoro Market stocks vegetables, rice, processed seafood, local sake and souvenirs with an emphasis on Miyazu and the wider Tango area. Inside, Minato Shokudo Shiosai offers dishes made with locally landed fish and market vegetables, plus sweets such as Amanohashidate cheesecake. People who want to eat and those buying food to take home can do both on the same site.

03

A gateway to Miyazu beyond Amanohashidate

Before heading for Amanohashidate, add the Former Mikami Residence, Miyazu Catholic Church, Shimazaki Park or Miyazu Pier to see more of Miyazu itself. On a fine day, children can walk beside the bay; on a rainy day, visit a historic building. The station connects a rest stop with the town's food and streets.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Families and couples heading toward Amanohashidate from Miyazu-Amanohashidate Interchange

Turn an Amanohashidate rest stop into a Miyazu food stop

Close to the interchange, the station lets you use the toilets and parking before continuing to Amanohashidate. If time allows, browse souvenirs at Magokoro Market and try seafood or sweets at Osakana Kitchen. It gives you a chance to experience Miyazu on the way.

Miyazu-Amanohashidate Interchange → roadside station → Amanohashidate area

Allow extra time for food and parking at lunchtime and during the tourist season.

Busy holiday periods and family days when you want to avoid traffic

Park the car and take a boat toward Amanohashidate

Miyazu Pier is near the station. On operating days, park and cruise lets you travel toward Amanohashidate by boat. Plan parking, a toilet stop and boat times together for an easier trip with children.

Parking near the roadside station → Miyazu Pier → Amanohashidate Pier

Sailing dates, times and parking terms change by year and period. Check official information before setting out.

Visitors focused on shopping for local gifts rather than a meal

Decide what to take home first

Miyazu Magokoro Market sells more than vegetables and rice: look for processed seafood, local sake, Amanohashidate cheesecake and packaged Miyazu curry yakisoba noodles. Browsing first can help you decide between a full lunch and a lighter stop for sweets and shopping. Yakisoba is Japanese stir-fried noodles; this version uses Miyazu curry seasoning.

Park → Magokoro Market → Osakana Kitchen

Fresh market stock varies with season and time of day. Come early if you have a particular item in mind.

A driving break with preschool or elementary school children

Give children a short walk by the sea

This station is not centered on large playground equipment. After a toilet stop, families can walk to Shimazaki Park or along the bay. With a stroller, judge the wind, sun and walking distance before going farther.

Adults, grandparents and visitors seeking a quiet short outing

Switch to the Former Mikami Residence on a rainy day

When a bayfront walk is less inviting, head to the Former Mikami Residence within walking distance. Its merchant house history recalls Miyazu's castle town and Kitamaebune, the coastal trading ships. Return to the station afterward and the local sake and processed seafood at the market may have more context.

Roadside station → Former Mikami Residence → Magokoro Market

The Former Mikami Residence closes Wednesdays and over the New Year period; the dining facility also closes Wednesdays.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

The 24 hour toilets and information desk are useful. Keep this a short rest stop and plan feeding, diaper changes and protection from heat rather than a play outing.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A short walk in Shimazaki Park or beside the bay works better than running around inside the station. Watch for nearby roads and water.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A boat, the bay, market sweets and the park make a varied outing. On park and cruise days, the journey itself can be part of the fun.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Children can range farther to Miyazu Pier, the Former Mikami Residence and Amanohashidate. A short route connects the seaside town with its history.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Shimazaki Park multipurpose square and lawn

Used for events such as the winter Miyazu Manpuku Festival alongside the roadside station area. Check crowding in the park as well as at the station on event days.

Miyazu Pier

A transfer point from car to boat for park and cruise and routes toward Ine. Operating periods vary by year; check the latest sailing notices.

In front of the roadside station and around Hamamachi

Near the route of the Miyazu Festival procession and bayfront events. Parking and pedestrian flows can differ from an ordinary day.

Some summers bring beach illuminations and short fireworks displays, adding an evening option. The station works as a daytime base for food and parking.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Shop early if you have a particular market item in mind

Miyazu Magokoro Market sells produce brought in by farmers and processors from the Tango area. Its official page says popular items can sell out in the afternoon. Arrive earlier for a specific purchase, or browse the remaining seasonal goods after a walk.

Allow flexibility around Wednesday closures and lunchtime crowds

Osakana Kitchen Miyazu is generally closed Wednesdays and attracts visitors for seafood dishes and sweets. If lunch plans change, consider sweets, the market or nearby Totomart.

Give children a brief waterfront break beyond the station

This is not a station centered on large playground equipment. Combine a stop with Shimazaki Park or a bayfront walk for a change of pace on a long drive, while watching the water and roads.

Turn to the town's history on rainy days

Within walking distance, the Former Mikami Residence offers a short cultural outing. Its history of Kitamaebune coastal trade and Miyazu's castle town adds context to the local food and shopping.

Use daytime and evenings differently in summer

In summer, spend daytime at the market, over a meal and resting beside the bay. On scheduled days, beach illumination or short fireworks near Amanohashidate can make an evening outing. To avoid the heat, plan the station stop by day and the waterfront later.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • About five minutes by car from Miyazu-Amanohashidate Interchange on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway, or about ten minutes on foot from Miyazu Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway. The location works for exploring the town by car or rail.
  • The ground level lot is free around the clock. The multistory lot has about 400 standard car spaces and is free for up to five hours, then charges apply.
  • Toilets, parking and the public telephone are available 24 hours. Food and shopping facilities close at night, so an overnight stop is mainly for a break.
  • Park and cruise dates and sailing times vary. The boat from Miyazu Pier to Amanohashidate Pier is listed as taking about ten minutes.
  • For a meal, note that Minato Shokudo Shiosai closes Wednesdays and is open 10:00–17:00 (lunch 11:00–14:30). For evening service in busy periods, check official announcements.
  • Magokoro Market is generally closed January 1–2. Year end and New Year hours or closures vary by shop.
  • The bayfront can be hot and reflective in summer. With children, bring water and hats and plan a short walk.

It is normally closed Tuesdays; individual shops may keep different hours.

A quick taste of local produce

Seasonal vegetables from Magokoro Market / eggs / rice / processed foods

A circuit of the market can be rewarding even on a brief stop.

A cooler bag is useful for fresh food.
