How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Summer dining
Ayu Garden

Seasonal from late June through the end of September. Your visit can take much longer if you add salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, catching ayu, or a barbecue.

For sweets
Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc soft serve

Nagomi Cafe's signature sweet. Black soybean soft serve and nama-dora Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc, a fresh dorayaki pancake dessert, are also reasons to stop without having a meal.

Take something home
Vegetable market and Wachi souvenirs

Choose from local farmers' vegetables, Wachi black soybeans, chestnuts, and Nagomi's own processed ayu products, keeping refrigeration needs and travel time in mind.

Learn a little
Traditional Performing Arts Hall

Inside the Road Information Center, you may catch a scheduled performance of Wachi puppet joruri, a traditional narrated puppet theater, or other arts.

Head outdoors
Wachi Wildflower Forest

A nature park near the station. A good detour for flowers, shade, or a short walk with children.

Highlights

Near National Route 27 and the Kyotamba Wachi interchange, Roadside Station Nagomi offers more than a toilet break. A kitchen overlooking the Yura River and its river terraces, the summer Ayu Garden, Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc soft serve, black soybean soft serve, and a vegetable market replenished daily bring Kyotamba's food into even a short stop. With more time, add the adjacent Traditional Performing Arts Hall and Wachi Wildflower Forest to enjoy Wachi's nature and culture at a slower pace.

Sakurako Hinata's Nagomi notes

Check the toilets and opening hours first, then decide whether to eat, shop, or relax by the river.

At Roadside Station Nagomi, choose Nagomi Kitchen if your visit fits mealtime, Nagomi Cafe for sweets, Ayu Garden in summer, or the shop and vegetable market when you are in a hurry. With so many choices, it helps to decide after parking. With children, return indoors instead of staying on a hot terrace; for outdoor play, move on to Wachi Wildflower Forest. Those easy changes of plan are part of the station's appeal.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

In summer, ayu take center stage

Nagomi's clearest seasonal attraction is the Ayu Garden, rooted in the landscape of the Yura River. Besides freshly grilled ayu sweetfish, there are notices about catching ayu and reserving fish to take home, making it a destination in its own right for summer family drives.

02

Several choices for meals, sweets, and shopping

Have a full lunch at Nagomi Kitchen, chestnut or black soybean sweets at Nagomi Cafe, or something to take home from the shop and vegetable market. When one area is busy, it helps to be able to change where you eat or what you buy.

03

Rest with a view of the Yura River

Kyotamba Town also highlights the view of the Yura River's left bank and river terraces. The scenery outside offers a chance to unwind from driving at this roadside stop.

04

Traditional arts make a detour within the station

The Traditional Performing Arts Hall in the Road Information Center holds regular performances, including Wachi puppet joruri. If the schedule fits, a food and shopping stop also becomes an introduction to Wachi's culture.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

On the way toward Ayabe or Maizuru

A 30-minute break on National Route 27

Park, use the toilets, circle the shop and vegetable market, then have black soybean soft serve or a Japanese chestnut sweet. Even a short stop introduces Kyotamba ingredients and feels like more than a basic break.

Park → toilets → shop and vegetable market → sweet → depart

Usually closed on Tuesdays. Toilets and parking are available 24 hours, but check opening hours if you are coming to eat or shop.

Family drives, a journey home, or a meal from midday to evening

Stop specifically for summer ayu

During Ayu Garden season, the roadside station becomes a seasonal food outing. With notices about catching ayu and reserving fish to take home, families should allow for a change of clothes, heat, and waiting time.

Roadside station → Ayu Garden → Nagomi Terrace → shop

The 2026 event is announced for June 21 through September 30. Operations may change with weather or crowds.

Around the fourth Saturday, or an adult trip focused on culture

Add Wachi's culture

On performance days at the Traditional Performing Arts Hall in the Road Information Center, you can see Wachi puppet joruri or Wachi drumming before or after a meal. Since it is on the station grounds, it can also fit a rainy-day visit.

Roadside station → Road Information Center → Traditional Performing Arts Hall → cafe

Performances are roughly monthly; there are no performances in August or December, and dates may change. Check the latest schedule before visiting.

Families with primary-school children; walks in spring, early summer, or autumn

Make a half-day outing with a nature walk

After a meal or sweets, head to Wachi Wildflower Forest for flowers, shade, and the air along the Yura River. It suits children who still want to move after a station stop.

Roadside station → Nagomi Kitchen or cafe → Wachi Wildflower Forest

The forest is also generally closed on Tuesdays. Since its closure often coincides with the station's, have another option for a Tuesday trip.

A day centered on children

Continue to Kyotamba's larger play area

After food and toilets at Roadside Station Nagomi, drive south to Tamba Natural Sports Park. With large play equipment and open grounds as the main attraction, the station works well for lunch, shopping, and supplies before the return drive.

Roadside Station Nagomi → National Route 27 and Kyoto Jukan Expressway direction → Tamba Natural Sports Park

The park is some distance from the station; with toddlers, allow for travel time and naps.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Useful for a brief toilet stop, a break before or after feeding, or sweets indoors.

Summer at Ayu Garden and the outdoor terrace can be hot. Plan around indoor seats, easy access back to the car, and Tuesday closures.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Soft serve or udon can help reset a child's mood. Catching ayu may be a memorable summer activity.

An adult needs to help with activities involving water or fire. After eating, move to Wachi Wildflower Forest for physical activity instead of stretching out the station visit.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Ayu, sweets, and a short nature walk can make a half-day outing.

On hot days, keep Ayu Garden time short enough to return to the cafe or shop. If a performance is scheduled, the Traditional Performing Arts Hall offers a more indoor-focused rainy-day option.

Primary-school children
★★★★★

Catching ayu, Wachi puppet joruri, and Wachi Wildflower Forest can connect food with learning about the area.

Add a monthly performance or the nature park after eating to bring Kyotamba's river, hills, and culture into the same day.

Toilets and parking

Toilets, parking, the public phone, and vending machines are listed as available even when the shops are closed.

Food choices

Udon and soba noodles and soft serve offer choices for different ages. The children's lunch is suspended for the time being.

Outdoor play

For more room to run than the station offers, move on to Wachi Wildflower Forest or Tamba Natural Sports Park.

Summer considerations

An Ayu Garden visit can take longer. Plan for water, hats, a change of clothes, and waiting time.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
After parking, use the toilets and visit the shop first

There are 88 car parking spaces, and the toilets are open 24 hours. On a busy day, taking a break before joining the food queue can make the visit easier.

  2. 2
Decide on a meal using the last-order time

Nagomi Kitchen lists last orders at 16:00. For a late arrival, switching to the cafe or shop is less likely to disrupt your plans.

  3. 3
Keep terrace time short on hot days

The Yura River view is appealing, but Ayu Garden season can be hot. Indoor seats and an easy return to the car can help prevent fatigue.

Event

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The kitchen offers views, the cafe offers sweets, and the shop offers food to take home

Nagomi Kitchen is for a meal overlooking the Yura River and its terraces. Nagomi Cafe is for a quick stop for Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc or black soybean soft serve. At the shop and vegetable market, look for Wachi black soybeans, local vegetables, and processed ayu to take home.

Around the fourth Saturday, add culture within the station

The Traditional Performing Arts Hall offers Wachi puppet joruri and other performances roughly once a month. They fit before or after a meal or sweets and can change the feel of a rainy day or an adult trip.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

  • Toilets, parking, the public phone, and vending machines are available 24 hours a day, even when shops are closed.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Have lunch

Wachi Satoyama rice box, mackerel rice box, Tamba Premium chicken-and-egg rice box, tempura set meal

Good when you want a break with views toward the Yura River. Last orders are relatively early, so if you arrive at 15:00 or later, leave room to switch to sweets or the shop.

Make summer food the destination

Salt-grilled ayu, Ayu Garden, catching ayu

For a family or a drive home, these turn a rest stop into a seasonal outing. Allow extra time for heat and crowds.

The 2026 event runs through September 30. Check official notices for hours by day of week and which activities require reservations.

Take a short sweets break

Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc soft serve, black soybean soft serve, nama-dora Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc, Premium Tamba fresh cream puff

You can still sample Kyotamba flavors outside meal hours. Allow time to finish sweets that melt easily before returning to the car.

Shop for the trip home

Local vegetables, Wachi black soybeans, chestnuts, local sake sweets, processed ayu

Vegetables and popular items may be scarcer by evening. For shopping, morning through early afternoon offers a better choice.

Feed hungry children

Udon and soba noodles, soft serve, light meals

It is easy to switch between a seated meal in the kitchen, a quick cafe stop, and take-home food from the shop. With small children, indoor seats may be more comfortable than a hot terrace.

The official operating calendar says the children's lunch is suspended for the time being.
