Sakurako's shopping notes

Walk through the shop before you eat.

Sakurako Morisaki would make more of this stop than a mountain-road toilet break. Browse Mandokoro tea, Eigenji konnyaku, char, honey, and woodcraft before heading to the dining area. Then dam curry or char soba feels connected to Oku-Eigenji. Shop, eat, and explore the exhibits in the former school building: that sequence gives a Route 421 stop a sense of place.

Walk through the shop first and you'll find the focus of today's detour.

Highlights

Roadside Station Oku-Eigenji Keiryu no Sato stands on Route 421 near the Shiga–Mie prefectural border, in the former Mandokoro Junior High School building. Browse Mandokoro tea, Eigenji konnyaku, preserved char and amago trout, honey, Eigenji maitake mushrooms, and woodcraft in the shop. For a meal, try Eigenji Dam curry, char soba, an Omi beef rice bowl, or Mandokoro tea soft serve. A small aquarium in the forest, exhibits on traditional woodturners, and the Suzuka Ten Peaks Visitor Center make this a place to discover Oku-Eigenji's food and mountain village culture as well as take a break.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Shop for the tastes and crafts of Oku-Eigenji

The shelves hold Mandokoro tea, Eigenji konnyaku, whole simmered char and amago trout, honey, Eigenji maitake mushrooms, and work by local woodcraft makers: products rooted in mountain life. Walk through the shop before eating to see why this station is a gateway to Oku-Eigenji as well as a rest stop.

02

Choose between dam curry and stream fish at the dining spots

At Furusato Manabiya, the signature Eigenji Dam curry models the dam on a plate. There are also dishes with venison and char. Uomatsu Noodle Shop offers char soba, Omi beef rice bowls, Omi chicken oyakodon (chicken-and-egg rice bowls), and Mandokoro tea soft serve, giving family members with different tastes choices.

03

Meet stream fish and woodturner culture inside the old school

The Green and Water Classroom includes a small aquarium with char and yamame trout from the headwaters of the Echi River, plus fish from Lake Biwa. Exhibits about this area's roots in traditional woodturning add context to the woodcraft and tea you may have seen in the shop.

04

Use a Route 421 stop to plan hiking, fishing, or autumn foliage

The Suzuka Ten Peaks Visitor Center, fishing permit sales, and information on submitting hiking plans let you review the weather, roads, and destination before heading into the mountains. Autumn foliage at Eigenji, summer river play, and winter mountain roads each call for different planning; this is a useful place to pause.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A weekend drive from Yokaichi Interchange into the mountains on Route 421

Turn a lunch break into a Mandokoro tea and dam curry stop

Browse Mandokoro tea, Eigenji konnyaku, honey, and woodcraft in the shop, then have Eigenji Dam curry at Furusato Manabiya. Add Mandokoro tea soft serve afterward for a local taste even on a short stop.

Parking → shop → Furusato Manabiya → Mandokoro tea soft serve → exhibition area

Restaurant hours may change depending on ingredients. If lunch is your main aim, stop by early.

Families with preschoolers or primary school children; a break on a mountain-road drive

With children, use the old school and small aquarium as a rainy-day option

You can see char and yamame trout in the school building's tanks without spending a long time by the river. Woodturner exhibits and a photo with Tobita-kun, a character from Higashiomi, offer more than a toilet stop.

24-hour toilets → Small Aquarium in the Forest → shop → light snack

For river play, guidance directs visitors to nearby paid campgrounds instead of leaving a car in the station lot for a long time.

Suzuka Ten Peaks hikes, stream fishing, or a mountain drive over Route 421

Gather mountain information before hiking or fishing

Check mountain information at the Suzuka Ten Peaks Visitor Center and, if needed, buy a fishing permit at the shop. Eat and use the toilets at the station before moving on.

Shop → Suzuka Ten Peaks Visitor Center → hikers' parking or your destination

An adviser may be absent from the visitor center. Also use official updates for hiking plans and weather checks.

November foliage drives, trips with grandparents, or an adult half-day outing

Pair autumn foliage at Eigenji with a plan for crowds

Buy Mandokoro tea and konnyaku at the station, continue to Eigenji for autumn leaves, and finish at Happu no Yu hot spring. The station lists Tuesday opening in November, while roads and parking around the foliage sites can be busy.

Roadside station → Eigenji Temple → Eigenji Onsen Happu no Yu

Peak foliage, visiting hours, illuminations, and parking change each year. Check current event information shortly before your trip.

Day camping, river play, and supplies before camping

Keep summer river play separate from station parking

If you are visiting Eigenji Campground or another nearby campground, use the station for shopping, food, toilets, and road information. Check the campground's own advice for firewood and ingredients; the station is a place to add local vegetables or a snack.

Shop at the roadside station → Eigenji Campground or another nearby campground → a sweet treat on the return trip

Avoid leaving a car in the station lot for a long river outing. In summer, watch water levels, thunderstorms, and sudden rises in the river.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Up to age 1
★★★☆☆

Convenient for toilets and a short break.

The 24-hour toilets and indoor rest area are helpful. A brief shop visit, exhibits, and a small sweet stop fit better than lengthy river play.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A change of scene at the aquarium and a Tobita-kun photo.

Seeing fish, walking through the school building, and having soft serve can be enough. At the riverbank, check footing and water levels and avoid getting too close.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Good age to enjoy stream fish, woodcraft, and the old school's atmosphere.

The Small Aquarium in the Forest is easy to appreciate and can fill time before a meal. For summer river play, plan to use a campground rather than the station lot.

Primary school age
★★★★☆

Explore the Suzuka Ten Peaks, river headwaters, and woodturner culture.

Combine the exhibits and nearby walks with Eigenji or a campground to learn more about the area. Mountain-road travel can be long, so plan breaks for motion sickness or tiredness.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Spaces used for events

Oku-Eigenji Fishing Cooperative fishing permit sales

A May 31, 2026 notice lists fishing permit sales. Stream-fishing permits cost ¥6,000 annually or ¥2,000 daily; ayu fishing permits cost ¥8,000 annually or ¥2,500 daily (tax included). An annual permit requires an ID-sized photograph. Check cooperative information and water levels before a fishing trip.

November autumn foliage drive

Eigenji Temple may change its visiting hours and foliage guidance in November. The station lists daily opening that month, but plan for crowded roads and parking.

Suzuka Ten Peaks Visitor Center

Hiking advice, exhibits, and information about submitting hiking plans make this a useful stop before heading into the mountains from Route 421. An adviser may be absent, so check its current opening status.

Tobita-kun and community donations

Tobita-kun, the roadside safety mascot that originated in Higashiomi City, makes a photo stop at the station. Official notices also report donations, showing the station's role as a local community hub.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Keep your meal plans flexible

Visitor accounts show interest in dam curry, char, and Mandokoro tea soft serve, but some visitors do not find a desired menu item on the day. Including the shop, soft serve, and exhibits in your plans gives you options if the restaurant menu changes.

The old school leaves an impression

The reused Mandokoro Junior High School building makes a different first impression from a typical roadside station. Seeing its aquarium and woodturner exhibits adds a sense of the area even on a short visit.

Prepare before the mountain road

Route 421 connects Shiga and Mie through the mountains. Before heading for the Suzuka Ten Peaks, fishing, or camping, it is practical to check toilets, food, roads, and weather here.

Plan river play around the right parking

Official notices direct river visitors to nearby paid campgrounds and similar facilities. Use the station for shopping and a break, then go to a dedicated place for river play.

Autumn brings foliage and crowds

Eigenji's autumn leaves are a major nearby draw and pair well with shopping or a sweet stop at the station. Peak foliage and illuminations change yearly, so check current information shortly before visiting.

Parking is limited compared with large suburban stations

The official capacity is 36 standard cars, five large vehicles, and four accessible spaces. In foliage season or during events, allow for a shorter meal and shopping stop and consider parking at your next destination.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Restaurant hours may change with ingredient availability. If you are visiting for lunch, leave time for the shop or a sweet treat as alternatives.
  • Before heading into the mountains on Route 421, check the weather, roads, toilets, EV charging, and drinking water.
  • For long hiking or fishing visits, use the designated hikers' parking or parking at your destination instead of the station lot.
  • For a November visit to Eigenji's autumn foliage, check visiting hours, illuminations, parking, and traffic shortly beforehand.
  • In winter the shop closes at 16:30, and mountain roads darken early. Allow extra time for late-afternoon travel.
  • River conditions can change with water levels, thunderstorms, and sudden rises. Follow campground or dedicated facility guidance rather than relying only on the station.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

Try a local specialty

Menu items and serving times may vary with ingredient availability.

Choose noodles or a rice bowl

Char soba / Omi beef rice bowl / Omi chicken oyakodon (chicken-and-egg rice bowl) / kitsune udon (noodles with seasoned fried tofu)

At Uomatsu Noodle Shop, people wanting a substantial meal and those wanting something lighter can both find an option.

The latest notice lists opening until 16:00, while last orders for meals are at 15:00. Avoid arriving late for lunch.

Take something home

Mandokoro tea / Eigenji konnyaku / whole simmered char and amago trout / honey / Eigenji maitake mushrooms

Even without eating at a restaurant, you can take a taste of Oku-Eigenji home from the shop. Many items are easy to serve at home.

Take a sweet break

Mandokoro tea soft serve / coffee set / bread

For a short break on the mountain stretch of Route 421, a tea-flavored sweet makes a pleasant stop.

Take the local culture home too

Woodcraft / traditional woodturner exhibits / Tobita-kun photo

The exhibits and shop both show Oku-Eigenji's heritage as a home of traditional woodturners.
