Kotō Sanzan temples and Koura town walks

Takumi's rest-stop notes

Make the wait for pizza part of the outing.

Takumi Kashiwagi sees more here than a place to eat: park, use the toilet, choose pizza or a crepe, then let the dog or children catch their breath outdoors. That sequence can make the car ride calmer even on a day when you are eager to reach the Kotō Sanzan temples.

Eat

Choose among wood-fired pizza, set meals and crepes according to the time of day.

Rest

Locate the outdoor rest area and toilets first to make the wait feel shorter.

Go farther

Add the general park, Koura no Yu or Saimyōji according to the weather and your companions.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki (roadside station) Seseragi no Sato Koura, on National Route 307, makes it easy to combine Koura vegetables, wood-fired pizza, crepes, set meals and a free dog run in one stop. Takumi Kashiwagi sees it as a waypoint on an eastern Shiga drive where a meal can also become a break for dogs and children. If you are continuing to the Kotō Sanzan temples or Koura Town General Park, check parking, toilets, outdoor tables and opening hours first.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Several meal choices at one stop

Choose Kouraku Shokudo for a full meal, PIZZERIA UNO for a taste of local vegetables, or Crepes for a sweet break. Even if your companions want different things, you can choose among options on site.

02

An easy break to plan with a dog

The dog run has separate areas for small dogs, medium and large dogs, and exclusive use; ordinary use is free, while exclusive bookings have a fee. An outdoor rest area is nearby. Check its hours and weather restrictions, but it is a convenient place for a dog to stretch during a National Route 307 drive.

03

Easy to extend into an eastern Shiga outing

For a short stop, the farm shop and pizza may be enough. With more time, continue to Koura Town General Park, Koura no Yu or Saimyōji, one of the Kotō Sanzan temples. The location makes it easy to shop, eat, rest and add a little play.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

An eastern Shiga drive centered on food

Order pizza before lunch and browse the farm shop while you wait

Choose your pizza at PIZZERIA UNO first, then spend the baking time at the farm shop or outdoor rest area. With children or a dog, the outdoor space gives you somewhere to spend the wait.

Park → toilet → order pizza → farm shop → outdoor seating.

Pizza, crepes and the diner can have changing hours or sell out on a given day.

A break with a dog

With a dog, make the run one part of the break

Let your dog stretch in the free dog run, then briefly visit the farm shop or outdoor seating. There is no water tap inside the run; the designated tap is under the farm shop eaves.

Park → dog run → outdoor break → takeaway.

Use may be restricted in bad weather, during events or for facility management reasons.

Families with preschool or elementary school children

If the children still need to move, head to the general park

After lunch and shopping at the station, continue to Koura Town General Park if the children still want to run. Switching to a place with play equipment can be less tiring for the family than extending the stop at the station.

Station → Koura Town General Park → Koura no Yu if needed.

The park is mainly outdoors. In midsummer sun or rain, consider an indoor option such as Koura no Yu instead.

Temples and autumn foliage

Plan food and toilets around a Kotō Sanzan visit

On a trip toward Saimyōji or the other Kotō Sanzan temples, use the station for toilets, drinks and a snack before setting off. During foliage season, destinations can be crowded, so having a meal option at the station helps.

Station → Saimyōji → other Kotō Sanzan sites or Hikone.

Road and parking congestion around the temples can differ from normal during foliage season and long holidays.

A passing stop of about 30 minutes

For a short break, choose one food stop

If you cannot linger on National Route 307, decide whether the main stop is shopping at the farm shop, a crepe or the toilets. Leave another treat for the return trip instead of trying to do everything.

Park → toilet → farm shop or Crepes → depart.

The best option changes with the time of day: Kouraku Shokudo in the morning, pizza at lunch, and sweets in the afternoon.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short toilet stop, farm shop visit or outdoor seat.

Shopping and food are the main activities here. Carrying a baby and keeping the visit short may be easier than a long circuit with a stroller.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Suitable for a sweet break and a little time outdoors.

This is not a place for extended play; if your child wants to run, switch to Koura Town General Park.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Pizza, crepes and the park offer variety.

Break up the food wait outdoors, then add the general park a few minutes away by car to shape the day's outing.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

You can combine food, shopping, a dog stop and talk about the Kotō Sanzan temples.

Even children less interested in temples or history may find nearby sightseeing easier after pizza at the station or a park visit.

Toilets

There is a multipurpose toilet; the toilets and parking are listed as available 24 hours a day.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

With a dog, check run hours and the water tap first

The dog run is free, but closes earlier in winter and may be restricted during bad weather or events. The designated water tap is under the farm shop eaves, not inside the run; locating it first makes the stop easier.

With children, switching to the general park can work better than staying at the station

Food and shopping are the main activities at the station. If children want to run, Koura Town General Park has a 60 m roller slide, a Tarzan rope and other play equipment; making it the next stop helps avoid a long, restless wait.

A useful waypoint during foliage season or a Kotō Sanzan circuit

Before visiting Saimyōji or the other Kotō Sanzan temples, the station is a useful place for toilets, a snack and drinks, especially when parking and meal timing at the destination are uncertain. You can make the temples the focus while planning a break here.

Check current notices for seasonal products and events

Events here have included succulent-plant workshops, Wanwan Festa and Miso Soup Festa. Check recent official notices or social media for the latest business information; past events are not a schedule for your visit.

In snow or bad weather, shorten the outdoor part of your stop

Official social media may announce shorter hours or dog-run closures during snow or severe weather. Even in eastern Shiga, a winter or bad-weather stop works better as a brief visit for pizza or shopping than a long stay at outdoor seats or the run.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Approximate hours: farm shop 9:00–17:00; PIZZERIA UNO 10:30–17:00; Crepes 10:00–17:00; Kouraku Shokudo 8:00–16:00.
  • The usual closing day is the second Monday, with no regular closures in August or November; when that Monday is a public holiday, it shifts to Tuesday. Check official notices for individual businesses and New Year hours.
  • Toilets and parking are listed as available 24 hours a day. At night, use them for rest stops; meals and shopping require business hours.
  • Dog-run hours are listed as 9:30–17:00, or 9:30–16:00 from November 1 through the end of February. Bad weather or events may restrict use.
  • At peak lunchtime, allow for a pizza wait. Ordering first and then visiting the farm shop or outdoor rest area can help.
  • On a foliage-season visit to the Kotō Sanzan temples, allow for crowded parking nearby and use the station's toilets and drink options before moving on.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Wood-fired pizza
    Local vegetable pizza
A PIZZERIA UNO staple; the origin and selection of vegetables vary by season.
  • Local flavors
    Special Ōmi beef pizza
A pizza made with Ōmi beef, Shiga's regional beef. Check the shop for current availability and price.
  • Sweet break
    Crepes and soft-serve ice cream

  • Take-home goods
Koura farm produce and processed foods
Look for vegetables, rice, locally made foods and Shiga souvenirs at the farm shop.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

The main lunch choice

PIZZERIA UNO

Local vegetable pizza and special Ōmi beef pizza are leading options when you want a meal that reflects the station.

Check the official menu just before visiting; prices can change and limited-time items come and go.

A substantial morning meal

Kouraku Shokudo

Choose it for rice bowls or set meals. Its approximate hours are 8:00 to 16:00, making it an option before sightseeing in eastern Shiga.

Kouraku Shokudo may have different days off from the other businesses; check its notice for the day.

A sweet pause

Crepes

Good for a short break with children, when you do not want a full diner meal, or when you want something after lunch.

Seasonal items and limited crepes can sell out, so have another option in mind.

Take something home

Koura farm produce and locally processed foods

Browse vegetables, rice and processed foods at the farm shop. Something you will use at home can make even a brief visit satisfying.

Meals with a dog

Takeaway and outdoor seating

Combining pizza or sweets with the outdoor rest area gives visitors with dogs a meal option.

When it is crowded or the weather is poor, keep the stop short instead of relying on outdoor seats.
