Takumi’s Kohoku notes

Look beyond the lake and take Kohoku flavors home.

Takumi Naruse sees this as a lakeside break where meals and shopping are easy to plan. Check restaurant hours first and choose Biwa trout or grilled mackerel. Pick up rice or prepared foods at the shop, and if there is time before sunset, go down to the lake. With toilets and parking open 24 hours, it is also a useful stop on a long drive.

There is more to take home here than a view: Kohoku dinner ingredients, too.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kohoku Mizudori Station is a rest stop on the shore of Lake Biwa. Its official site presents Kohoku food culture and lake activities, highlighting the Biwako Hatchin group of eight prized lake fish, Omi beef, grilled mackerel, fermented foods, Omi rice and local vegetables. Restaurant choices include the Kohoku Kirakira Biwamasu rice bowl, Kohakucho ramen and grilled-mackerel spaghetti. The shop offers morning-delivered vegetables and fruit, prepared lake fish, grilled-mackerel somen noodles, noppei udon, choji-fu wheat gluten, Kikusui-ame candy and rice-flour baumkuchen. Parking and toilets are open 24 hours. For a longer stop, see the lakeside sunset, watch waterbirds in autumn and winter, or visit the nearby Kohoku Wild Bird Center, Odani Castle and Kinomoto-juku. Takumi Naruse recommends it as a place to eat, shop and pause in the lake breeze.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A lakeside sunset and waterbirds make the stop worthwhile

The station stands in Kohoku Waterbird Park. The Kinki Regional Development Bureau describes the area as a visiting place for tundra swans, bean geese, Steller’s sea eagles and grebes. The view of Lake Biwa here is counted among Japan’s 100 Best Sunsets; even a short toilet stop invites a walk down to the lake.

02

Plan lunch around Biwa trout and grilled mackerel

The official restaurant guide lists the Kohoku Kirakira Biwamasu rice bowl, Kohakucho ramen and grilled-mackerel spaghetti as popular dishes. Biwa trout is native to Lake Biwa, while grilled mackerel is tied to Nagahama’s local food traditions. Both give you a reason to time your stop for lunch.

03

The shop lets you take Kohoku’s kitchen home

The official shop guide lists morning-delivered vegetables and fruit, Omi rice, prepared lake fish, grilled-mackerel somen, noppei udon, choji-fu wheat gluten, Kikusui-ame candy, egoma oil and rice-flour baumkuchen. If travelling by car, you can bring Kohoku flavors home for dinner.

04

A stop on the Sazanami Kaido and Biwaichi cycling route

The official access guide puts the station about 10 minutes from both Kinomoto and Nagahama interchanges and gives cycling approaches of about 12 km from Nagahama Port via the lakeside road and about 16 km from Michi-no-Eki Omi Haha no Sato. With 103 standard-car spaces, 11 large-vehicle spaces and bicycle parking for touring cyclists, it is convenient for drivers and cyclists.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A midday break on the Sazanami Kaido

Make lake fish the focus of lunch

At the restaurant, start with Biwa trout, grilled mackerel or small ayu. Beyond a quick roadside meal, this stop offers a taste of Lake Biwa’s native fish and Nagahama’s local food traditions.

Park → restaurant → shop → lakeside break.

Weekday restaurant orders stop at 15:00; some weekend and holiday menu items end at 15:30.

An evening drive through Kohoku

Shop while waiting for sunset

Browse Omi rice, prepared lake fish, grilled-mackerel somen, choji-fu wheat gluten and rice-flour baumkuchen, then head to the lakeside as the sun lowers. Parking and toilets are available 24 hours, which makes an evening stop easier to plan.

Shop → terrace and lakeside → toilets → onward journey.

The shop is generally open until 18:00 from April to October and 17:00 from November to March. Shop before waiting for sunset.

Autumn and winter, rainy days and children’s learning

Watch waterbirds at Kohoku Wild Bird Center

Kohoku Wild Bird Center is very close to the station. Pair migratory birds in autumn and winter with lake and Hira Mountains views on clear days, or observe from indoors when it is rainy or cold.

Michi-no-Eki → Kohoku Wild Bird Center → lakeside → shop.

The bird center closes on Tuesdays and may also close temporarily; check its opening status.

A half-day drive for adults

Add a Sengoku history stop at Odani Castle

After eating and shopping, head to the Odani Castle ruins, the mountain castle associated with the Azai clan. The climb adds walking, so on hot days the history museum or the foot of the mountain may be a more practical choice.

Michi-no-Eki → Odani Castle Sengoku History Museum → Odani Castle ruins.

Seasonal shuttle buses or restrictions on the forest road may apply during tourist periods.

A day for a little more food and shopping

Continue to Kinomoto-juku for shops and streets

In Kinomoto-juku, you can visit the old merchant streets along the Hokkokukaido, Kinomoto Jizoin Temple, local bakeries and sake breweries. Pairing Kohoku ingredients at the station with a post-town walk gives the outing a stronger local flavor.

Michi-no-Eki → Kinomoto-juku → towards Kinomoto Interchange.

Shop opening days vary; check ahead if you have a particular shop in mind.
