Takumi's lakeshore break notes

Eat, shop, see the lake. Choosing the order makes this station easier to enjoy.

Takumi Sakakibara sees Omi Hahanosato as a place to rest both car and body during a lakeshore-road journey. After parking, first check the toilets and opening hours. At midday, choose plate-served soba; later in the day, shop; with children, keep the plaza and lakeshore visit short. Add one thing to make the break feel like Maibara.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Omi Hahanosato is a roadside station on Maibara's lakeshore road, with Lake Biwa just ahead. Browse local vegetables, Ibuki soba, Omi beef curry and Lake Biwa shrimp crackers at the Sazanami Local Products Exchange Center, then have Ibuki soba served on small plates at Izumi during lunch hours. For a longer stretch, visit Fureai Plaza or the lakeshore, walk to OUMI WAVE in summer, or continue toward Nagahama Castle and Ho Park in the evening. Takumi Sakakibara suggests adding five minutes in the lakeshore breeze to a stop for the toilet and shopping.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Lake Biwa changes the feel of a roadside break

A toilet and shopping stop can be brief, but walking to the lakeshore changes the experience. It is a good way to get out of the car or off the saddle during a long drive or a Biwaichi ride.

02

Ibuki soba and northern Lake Biwa shopping in one stop

Izumi is a short-hours lunch stop, while Sazanami is a shopping base open 9:00–17:00. If you miss the restaurant, switch to boxed meals, prepared foods, sweets or local vegetables.

03

Adjust your visit with the station's grounds and nearby attractions

There are tennis courts, Fureai Dome and a grassy Fureai Plaza. In summer, add OUMI WAVE; later in the day, continue to Ho Park or Nagahama Castle. This can be a destination in its own right or a lakeshore rest stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive with a stop along the way

A 20-minute lakeshore break to reset

After parking, use the toilet, pick up a drink or sweet at the local products center, then walk briefly toward the lake. Feeling the Lake Biwa breeze can refresh you after driving more than staying inside the building.

Parking → toilets → local products center → short lakeshore walk

Facility hours are approximately 9:00–17:00. Late at night or early in the morning, plan mainly around the toilets and parking.

Visitors coming to eat and shop

Eat Ibuki soba and shop at lunchtime

Go to Izumi in the 11:00 hour, then look for local vegetables and northern Lake Biwa souvenirs at Sazanami. If the restaurant is busy or the timing does not work, switch to boxed meals, prepared foods or food trucks.

Izumi → local products center → Fureai Plaza

Izumi's lunch hours are short and it normally closes on Mondays.

Cyclists

Refuel and rest during Biwaichi

The station is easy to reach from the lakeshore road and has bicycle parking, an air pump and an e-bike rental route. Nagahama Port is about 12 km away, making this a useful refueling stop on the northern Lake Biwa route or before heading toward Kurokabe.

Lakeshore road → bicycle parking → toilet and supplies → toward Nagahama

Summer sun and wind along the lake can be tiring. Check your water supply and the daylight available for your return.

A sunny summer half-day

Walk to OUMI WAVE for more lake time in summer

OUMI WAVE is a seasonal lakeside attraction within walking distance. If your plans include stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), a tent sauna or water play, shop and use the toilet at the roadside station before heading to the shore.

Roadside station → OUMI WAVE → shopping at the local products center

Check official information for the season, prices, weather and availability of lake swimming or water sports.

Sightseeing by car

Extend the evening to Nagahama Castle and Ho Park

After eating and shopping at the station, drive to Nagahama Castle and Ho Park. Lake views, the history museum and walks around Nagahama Station can turn a lakeshore-road break into a half-day trip.

Omi Hahanosato → Nagahama Castle and Ho Park → Kurokabe Square area

The museum has a last admission time and closing days. Plan separately if you only want to walk through the park.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Useful for a multipurpose toilet and a short lakeshore break.

Do not plan the stop around a dedicated nursing room; combine the toilets, shade and a rest in the car.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

A short chance to move around at Fureai Plaza or by the lake.

Keep children close by the water. If the restaurant wait is long, consider light food from the local products center.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Add seasonal outdoor play on the lawn, walking path or at OUMI WAVE in summer.

Keep outdoor time short on hot days, and have water before returning to the car.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Easy to extend to lakeshore walks, cycling, OUMI WAVE or Green Park Santo.

Check the season, weather and age rules before lake swimming or water sports.

Toilets

The Kinki Regional Development Bureau lists toilets, parking and the public telephone as available 24 hours. Follow on-site notices if facilities change.

Rainy days

Keep visits to Fureai Plaza and the lakeshore short, and spend more time at the local products center or eating.

Hot days

The sun can be strong even with a lake breeze. Decide when to drink water, use a hat and return to the car.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Check your parking spot and the toilets first

The parking area is divided between the buildings and lakeshore. If traveling with others, check the shortest way to the toilets first.

  2. 2
Decide on the restaurant around lunchtime

Izumi has short lunch hours, so go there first if you want a meal. If the timing does not work, switch to boxed meals or prepared foods at the local products center.

  3. 3
Add even a short lakeshore stop

You do not need a long walk to enjoy Lake Biwa before leaving. Do not push on when winds are strong.

Food truck visits

Light-meal choices expand mainly on weekends and public holidays. The official monthly calendar lists dates; check it alongside restaurant hours when planning.

OUMI WAVE summer season

A lakeside facility within walking distance. Its 2026 season ran July 18–August 30 and has ended. During its season, SUP, tent saunas and water play offer a longer stay nearby.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Arrival time matters when visiting for the restaurant

Izumi serves lunch and has an early last order. Even though it is close to Maibara Interchange, plan a lunch-focused visit for the 11:00 hour through the early 13:00 hour.

Biwaichi riders can refuel and check their bikes here

The official access page lists bicycle parking and an air pump, and a model course includes a cycling route. Even a short stop offers toilets, supplies and an air-pressure check.

Keep the purpose simple at night or early morning

Visitor reviews suggest the station is used for late-night and early-morning breaks, though some mention a long walk to the toilets from certain parking spots. Outside business hours, plan for a rest stop and consider returning in daylight for shopping or food.

Convenient between Nagahama and Maibara sightseeing

Routes from the Nagahama Castle History Museum and Kurokabe Square area, Maibara Interchange and Sakata Station make this a convenient stop for toilets, shopping and a lakeshore break before or after sightseeing.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • For shopping, arrive during 9:00–17:00; come earlier if you want vegetables.
  • Izumi has short lunch hours, so head there first if a meal is your aim.
  • A lakeshore visit can make the stop more satisfying, but keep it brief in strong wind or intense summer sun.
  • While cycling, use the bicycle parking, air pump and toilets and refuel first; toward evening, check your lights and return route.
  • Summer OUMI WAVE visits, events and food trucks can change, so check the official news or social media on the day.
  • Before continuing to Nagahama Castle and Ho Park, check the museum's last admission and closing days.

Make lunch the main event

Izumi plate-served soba restaurant

If Ibuki soba served on small plates is your trip's main meal, arrive around midday rather than rushing in near the end of the 13:00 hour.

Follow official notices for regular closing days, Golden Week, Obon, New Year and the last-order time.

Buy something to take home

Local vegetables, Ibuki soba, Omi beef curry and Lake Biwa shrimp crackers

Even on a short break, choosing one item from Maibara or the northern Lake Biwa area makes the stop memorable.

The selection of freshly picked vegetables, boxed meals and prepared foods changes through the day.

If you miss the restaurant

Boxed meals, prepared foods, sweets and food trucks

With the restaurant's short lunch service, leave room in your plan to switch to something light from the market.

For a quick cycling recharge

Drinks, sweets, arare rice crackers, vegetables and prepared foods

On a Biwaichi ride, fuel and a toilet break may matter more than a long stay. Locate the bicycle parking and air pump first.

Continue tasting Shiga at home

Small sweetfish, shrimp with beans, funazushi and Kozuhara pickled plums

Try small amounts of Lake Biwa area specialties, including funazushi, fermented crucian carp, for a satisfying food souvenir.
