For a meal
Make Okowaya Ikuno your lunch stop

The guide is 11:00–15:00 for last orders. Arrive early for limited-quantity or seasonal dishes.

For just a sweet treat

Highlights

Renovated in August 2025, Michi-no-Eki Aino Tsuchiyama on National Route 1 offers more convenient dining, shopping, rest facilities, and amenities for families with children. Stop for Tsuchiyama tea soft serve or sencha drinks, okowa made with glutinous rice from Koka City, and mame daifuku (mochi filled with sweet beans). Tamura Shrine (田村神社) across the road and Tsuchiyama-juku (土山宿), an old Tokaido post town, are also within walking reach. Guide Takumi Fujishiro suggests locating the toilets and baby room first, then eating and trying tea sweets; on a rainy day, rest indoors and at the roofed plaza, or, in clear weather, add a walk to Tamura Shrine.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Drink, eat, and take home Tsuchiyama tea in one stop

Tsuchiyama is strongly associated with tea within Shiga Prefecture. The shop carries Tsuchiyama tea, kabusecha (shade-grown tea), Akachan Bancha, powdered tea, tea financiers, and green-tea jam. At Tsuchiyama Sabo, you can move straight to matcha soft serve, sencha lemonade, or a roasted-tea latte. A sweet break naturally leads into souvenir shopping here.

02

Okowa, tea soba, and mame daifuku offer different choices for the family

At Okowaya Ikuno, the main attraction is okowa, steamed sticky rice made with locally grown Shiga Habutaemochi glutinous rice. Tsuchiyama champon, Tsuchiyama ceramic-plate soba, seasonal dishes, kids plates, and kids udon widen the lunch choices. For dessert or a snack in the car, try Mamenoya mame daifuku, mochi filled with sweet bean paste; even a short stop can offer a taste of Tsuchiyama.

03

Switch between the indoor area and large roof on rainy or hot days

The renovation brought together a warm wooden interior, kids space, baby room, and large roofed plaza. Tsuchiyama is also remembered as a rainy post town, so a sheltered break has its own appeal. On event days, the large roofed plaza becomes a destination too.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Drivers between the Nagoya and Kameyama side and the Otsu and Kyoto side

Turn a midday Route 1 break into time for Tsuchiyama tea

At lunchtime, start at Okowaya Ikuno with okowa or tea soba. Follow it with tea soft serve or a sencha drink at Tsuchiyama Sabo to make the break distinctly Tsuchiyama. If time is short, Tsuchiyama tea and mame daifuku from the shop are satisfying too.

On National Route 1; guidance places it about 5 minutes from Koka-Tsuchiyama IC on the Shin-Meishin Expressway via Route 1.

The restaurant generally takes last orders at 15:00. Later in the day, plan around sweets and shopping.

Families with preschoolers, three generations, and stroller users

With children, map out the indoor facilities before eating

The kids space, baby room, diaper-changing table, nursing room, and child-sized toilets make it helpful to locate facilities first. Kids plates, kids curry, and kids udon offer meal alternatives, while shopping and tea sweets can help fill waiting time.

Park → toilets and baby room → meal → kids space → tea soft serve and shopping.

This is not a station for hours of play on large outdoor equipment. It works well as a short change of pace and meal break.

Rainy drives, hot days, and days when you want little outdoor walking

On rainy days, take shelter the Tsuchiyama way

Tsuchiyama is a post town associated with rain in depictions of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. The large roofed plaza and wooden interior make a rainy break worthwhile. When there are events or food trucks, you can look around under cover before shopping or getting a sweet treat.

Indoor shop → Tsuchiyama Sabo → large roofed plaza → a short visit to Tamura Shrine if time allows.

Event days can make the main lot and interior busy; consider the eastern lot if the main lot is full.

Adult travelers, history enthusiasts, and families wanting a short walk

When the weather allows, add Tamura Shrine and Tsuchiyama-juku

Tamura Shrine is across from the station. Continue to the former Tsuchiyama Honjin site and the Tokaido Tenmakan museum to experience the old post town. Adding a 30-minute to one-hour walk makes the tea and okowa stop more memorable.

Roadside station → Tamura Shrine → former Tsuchiyama Honjin site → Tokaido Tenmakan.

Keep the walk shorter in summer sun and heat or winter cold. Check closing days for exhibition facilities.

Drivers with dogs on a longer trip along Route 1

For dogs, use the dog run for a quick reset

The free dog run gives dogs a break from the car. People can enjoy Tsuchiyama tea and mame daifuku while taking turns at the dog run, making a short stop refreshing for everyone.

Park → dog run → take turns shopping and getting sweets.

Children of junior-high-school age or younger cannot use it alone. Follow the official rules on vaccination, leashes, and taking dog waste home.

★★★★☆

The kids space and child-sized toilets help. They suit a short change of pace before or after eating more than hours of play.

Some children may want more than the station offers. Add Tamura Shrine, Tsuchiyama-juku, or a ninja-themed event day.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Consider the eastern lot when the main lot is busy

Official guidance points to the eastern gravel lot if the main lot is full. Choose a space with walking distance and ground conditions in mind.

  2. 2
    Comfortable seated dining indoors

Okowaya Ikuno is listed as having about 90 seats, making a lunch break with three generations easier.

  3. 3
For a short stroll, walk to Tamura Shrine

You can encounter Tsuchiyama history at the shrine across the road without traveling farther.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The renovation has made family facilities a reassuring part of the break

An experience report describes wider aisles, the kids space, baby room, and child-sized toilets. These can help children reset during a Route 1 stop and make it easier to prepare before eating.

Generously piled tea soft serve is memorable for the experience as well as the flavor

Reviews and visitor reports repeatedly mention the portion size and fun of finishing the tea soft serve yourself. It can be a reason to stop even without a meal.

Lunch choices extend beyond okowa to noodles and kids meals

The official menu lists Tsuchiyama champon, Tsuchiyama ceramic-plate soba, seasonal dishes, and kids plates alongside okowa set meals. Even when companions want different things, you can plan lunch without falling back solely on tea sweets.

The large roofed plaza is especially useful in rain or on event days

Architectural information describes a deep eave for shelter from rain, while the station lists local product sales and seasonal events at the large roofed plaza. It is a useful place for a short rainy-day visit.

Adding Tamura Shrine and Tsuchiyama-juku turns a break into a history walk

Travel reviews describe using a map from the station to walk through Tsuchiyama-juku. Link Tamura Shrine across the road with the former Tsuchiyama Honjin site and Tokaido Tenmakan, and the station becomes an entrance to the old post town.

Dog owners can make good use of the free dog run by checking its rules first

The official site lists the dog run as free from 9:00 to 17:00, with possible restrictions during severe weather or events and rules on accompanying adults and vaccination. Check the conditions before using it.

Main lunch choices

Three-kind tawara okowa set meal / Tsuchiyama champon / Tsuchiyama ceramic-plate soba

Choose these when you want to taste Koka-grown glutinous rice or Tsuchiyama tea as part of a meal. Make this your anchor for a seated family lunch.

Arrive early for dishes advertised in limited quantities, such as the tawara okowa set.

For children

Kids plate / kids curry / kids udon

Useful when family members want different foods, including children who do not want tea soba.

When busy, check seating and ordering first; use the kids space or shop to manage the wait.

A quick sweet treat

Generously piled tea soft serve / premium soft serve / Omi sencha lemonade

Even without a meal, these give you a taste of Tsuchiyama tea. The tea soft serve that you finish yourself can be fun for children too.

Popular or limited-quantity items may run low later in the day.

To take home

Tsuchiyama tea / kabusecha shade-grown tea / Akachan Bancha / financiers / green-tea jam

Take Tsuchiyama home with tea leaves and tea sweets; lightweight gifts are easy to choose here.

Direct-sale products and local vegetables change by season and time of day.

Snack for the car

Mamenoya salted-bean daifuku / salted black-bean daifuku / salted soybean daifuku

Good for a bite after lunch or before the next drive. These mochi sweets also reflect the area’s glutinous-rice tradition.

Follow shop labels for shelf life and time out of refrigeration; avoid leaving them in a hot car.
