Takumi Kanzaki's suggested order

Summer

Add showers and shopping before or after Suishohama Beach.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Wakasa Mihama Hamabiyori is a new roadside station opposite JR Mihama Station on National Route 27. Buy local farm, forest and seafood products at Mihama no Ichiba market, eat at Hama Cafe or Meshiya Hamabi, and use the children's play area, temporary childcare, showers and covered event square. Parking, toilets, food and shopping make it a useful stop before or after visiting the Five Lakes of Mikata, Rainbow Line Summit Park, Suishohama Beach or Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle. Editor Takumi Kanzaki recommends it as a starting point for fitting Wakasa Mihama's sea, lakes and food into an unhurried half-day.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Eat, shop and take a break in one stop opposite the station

Directly opposite JR Mihama Station, it is also easy to reach by car from Wakasa Mihama and Wakasa Mikata interchanges. The same building has a produce market, cafe, restaurant, children's play area, showers and toilets, making it a useful preparation stop before the Five Lakes of Mikata or a beach trip.

02

Take home food from Mihama's sea, lakes and countryside at Mihama no Ichiba

The official station guide describes Mihama no Ichiba as a direct-sales market for local farm, forest and seafood products. Browsing from morning to midday gives you more time to choose than rushing through after a meal.

03

Choose the restaurant or cafe for lunch, or keep the stop light if timing is tight

Meshiya Hamabi serves lunch and dinner; Hama Cafe offers fresh pasta and pancakes. Each shop has its own operating days, so check the official schedule before setting out if lunch is your main purpose.

04

A useful break for families with young children

There is a children's play area and Sera, a specialist temporary childcare center; toilets are on both the first and second floors. On a long drive, you can shop, eat and give children a change of scene in one place.

05

Branch out to the lakes, sea or castle ruins

Mihama Lake Center, Rainbow Line Summit Park, Suishohama Beach and the Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle History Museum can turn a station stop into a half-day outing. In clear weather, choose lakes and sea; in rain or winter, food and history may make for an easier plan.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lakeside drive and sightseeing cruise

Eat and rest at the station before heading to the Five Lakes of Mikata

Look for drinks or souvenirs at Mihama no Ichiba, eat at Hama Cafe or Meshiya Hamabi, then head to Mihama Lake Center. Lake cruises depend on departure times, so avoid spending too long at the station.

Roadside station → Mihama Lake Center → Rainbow Line Summit Park.

The Lake Center is closed Wednesdays; check cruise times and weather.

Babies to preschoolers

Combine food, toilets and a change of scene with young children

Use the toilet soon after parking, let children move around briefly in the play area, then eat. Sera childcare is closed Mondays and Thursdays, so check its official information if you plan to use it.

Park → toilets → children's play area → cafe or market.

Dining seats can be busy at lunchtime or during events; leave room to switch to a light meal.

Swimming and coastal drives

Use the station for showers and shopping before or after Suishohama in summer

Suishohama Beach has a defined summer swimming season and hours. On beach days, shop and use the toilets at the station in the morning, then stop for a shower or cafe visit on the way back.

Roadside station → Suishohama Beach → roadside station for a break.

Check Suishohama's swimming hours, parking, and bans on camping and barbecues.

Adult trips and children of primary-school age or older

In rain or winter, choose food and Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle history

When views or the beach are less appealing, have lunch and shop at the station, then visit the Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle History Museum. Indoor exhibits and the streets of Sakaki add Mihama's history to the day.

Roadside station → Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle History Museum → Sakaki area.

The museum closes Mondays, the day after public holidays, and over the New Year period, among other days.

Family trips from mid-January to mid-June

Add HAMABERRY in strawberry season

HAMABERRY is a strawberry farm in Mihama Town and a seasonal complement to shopping at the station. As it has reservation periods and a season end, plan the visit rather than treating it like a walk-in market.

Roadside station → HAMABERRY → market for souvenirs.

The 2026 season was announced through mid-June. Wait for next season's details outside its operating period.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 0–1
★★★★☆

Toilets, indoor rest space and cafe are close together, keeping movement short near the station.

Check childcare conditions and closing days in advance.

Ages 2–3
★★★★★

A short play-area visit can lead easily into food or shopping.

Avoid a long wait for lunch seats; switch to the market or square.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Pancakes, direct sales and the event square offer variety. This is a good preparation stop before the sea or lakes.

The station itself is not intended as a place for many hours of play.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Combine a Five Lakes cruise, Rainbow Line or Kuniyoshi Castle museum for a learning experience.

Choose lakes, sea or history as the main outing according to weather.

Toilets

Guidance says toilets, parking and the rapid charger remain available on facility closing days.

Children's play area

Together with Sera childcare, it gives young children a place to rest.

Strollers

When busy, check space in market aisles and around dining seats.

Rainy days

Outdoor scenic sites are less appealing; consider the Kuniyoshi Castle museum or cafe.

After swimming

Approximately ¥500 for 30 minutes. Bring toiletries or buy them at reception.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose parking near the facilities

Guidance lists 108 standard-car spaces, 10 large-vehicle spaces and three wheelchair-accessible spaces. Parking close to the toilets or market makes breaks shorter.

  2. 2
Visit the market and eat earlier

Mihama no Ichiba closes around 17:30, and the restaurant's main service is lunch. If arriving late, focus on the cafe or souvenirs.

  3. 3
Choose lakes or sea according to weather

On clear days, consider Rainbow Line or Suishohama; in rain or extreme heat, the Kuniyoshi Castle museum or a cafe break is easier.

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A station-front location for both rail and car trips

Official and tourism information both emphasize its location in front of JR Mihama Station. It also works for readers using the Obama Line, rental bicycles or the Gokoichi Bus, as well as drivers.

Check each shop's hours if planning lunch

The official home page gives different hours and closing days by shop. Do not rely on the overall 9:00–20:00 hours alone; check Meshiya Hamabi, Hama Cafe and the market separately.

51 Bar Uragawa closed on June 27, 2026

Older guides mention evening drinks there, but an official notice says it has closed. Do not plan an evening visit to the former bar; check for newer options.

Parking and 24-hour toilets feature in reports of overnight stops

Several visitor accounts mention the spacious, level parking area and nearby 24-hour toilets. For a nighttime rest stop, consider the position of parking and toilets; this does not establish permission to stay overnight.

The play area and childcare stand out for families

The Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation and official information introduce Sera temporary childcare, the play area and Quick Studio. Families can plan more than a simple toilet stop here.

Leave enough time for the Five Lakes of Mikata

Cruises at Mihama Lake Center and visits to Rainbow Line Summit Park depend on schedules and weather. Use the station to stock up before heading to the lakes, leaving enough time there.

Suishohama's summer hours and rules affect your visit

The announced 2026 swimming season ran July 1–August 31, with swimming from 8:00 to 17:00. A shower or cafe stop at the roadside station can ease the trip home after the beach.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Start with the usual Thursday closure, then check each shop's temporary closures and monthly schedule.
  • If coming for lunch, arrive during Meshiya Hamabi's lunch service.
  • With children, locate the toilets and play area as soon as you arrive.
  • If heading to Suishohama or the Five Lakes of Mikata, keep shopping at the station brief.
  • If using the showers, check what you need to bring for towels, shampoo and a hair dryer in advance.
  • The former 51 Bar Uragawa has closed. For an evening visit, check the official information for karaoke bar Biton, opened September 2026 (18:00–22:00; closed Thursdays and Sundays).
  • Review summer swimming, the autumn Suishohama event and winter Rainbow Line opening hours each season.
