Takumi’s Arashima no Sato notes

Take home a sense of the mountains along with local food.

Takumi Kurose sees more here than a large food market. Choose Kamisho taro and Kuzuryu maitake, pause for rice-flour baumkuchen or soft serve, then take in the mountain air at Montbell and the Mount Arashima mini lookout. Ono’s food and mountain attractions connect on the same site once you leave the car.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Echizen Ono Arashima no Sato stands at the foot of Mount Arashima, beside Arashima Interchange, and is among Fukui Prefecture’s largest roadside stations. Browse Ono vegetables, mountain greens, mushrooms and Fukui souvenirs at Arashima Marche. The food court serves oroshi soba (buckwheat noodles with grated daikon), soy-sauce katsudon (a pork cutlet rice bowl), Kuzuryu maitake and tonchan dishes. Mori no Koshikake makes baumkuchen with rice flour from Ono-grown Koshihikari; Lovely Farm soft serve and Bellside Cafe give you a sweet stop even if you miss lunch. Indoors are Wanpaku Hiroba play area and a small freshwater aquarium; outdoors are a small lookout, canoe pond, climbing pinnacle, dog run and RV park. It works for rainy days, families with children or dogs, and breaks after hiking. Takumi Kurose recommends buying a taste of Ono and taking in a little mountain air before leaving.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Browse Okuetsu ingredients together at Arashima Marche

The official guide lists farm and forest products and local goods from the direct-sales association, plus Okuetsu mountain greens and mushrooms and souvenirs from across Fukui. Walk the aisles before eating to spot local specialties such as Kamisho taro and Kuzuryu maitake mushrooms.

02

Choose among Ono specialties at the food court

Meisui Chaya Ono Zanmai serves oroshi soba, sauce katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl with sauce) and soy-sauce katsudon. Arashima Terrace offers Kuzuryu maitake ramen and tonchan ramen. Even a short stop can include a taste of Okuetsu.

03

Rice-flour baumkuchen and farm soft serve make a sweet follow-up

Mori no Koshikake describes its baumkuchen as made with fresh-milled rice flour from Ono-grown Koshihikari and eggs from Fukui Prefecture. Lovely Farm’s Jersey soft serve and Bellside Cafe offer sweets even when lunch is not on your itinerary.

04

Montbell and activity facilities bring the mountain setting close

Fukui Prefecture’s first Montbell store, a canoe experience pond, climbing pinnacle and small lookout are all here. You can enjoy the feel of a mountain gateway even without hiking Mount Arashima.

05

Indoor play and 24-hour toilets make a weather-flexible stop

Wanpaku Hiroba, a small aquarium of Kuzuryu River freshwater fish, a baby care room and 24-hour toilets make this a useful break in rain or snowy weather.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Fukui and Okuetsu souvenirs and ingredients for dinner

Start your shopping break at Arashima Marche

Browse Kamisho taro, Kuzuryu maitake mushrooms, seasonal vegetables, mountain greens and processed foods at Arashima Marche first. Choosing what to buy before eating makes it easier to return after your meal.

Parking → Arashima Marche → food court → rice-flour baumkuchen → buy chilled goods before leaving.

Fresh produce and popular products vary by season and delivery. In the evening, it is safer to shop first.

A lunch break before or after Arashima Interchange

Sample Ono food with lunch and sweets

Choose Fukui oroshi soba or Ono’s soy-sauce katsudon at Meisui Chaya Ono Zanmai, or a Kuzuryu maitake or tonchan dish at Arashima Terrace. Follow with Mori no Koshikake or Lovely Farm for a taste of Ono even on a short visit.

Food court → takeout sweets → farm shop → check road information.

Each shop has its own hours and winter schedule. Check the official shop guide when planning a particular meal.

Families with children up to the early primary-school years

Make it a rainy-day break with children

Wanpaku Hiroba, the Kuzuryu River Freshwater Fish Mini Aquarium and a baby care room are indoors, so rain or snow need not reduce the stop to a toilet break. Adults can browse the market and sweets while children enjoy a short play break.

Toilets → Wanpaku Hiroba → mini aquarium → soft serve or baumkuchen → depart.

Wanpaku Hiroba’s indicative hours are 10:00–17:00, and it is intended for children through third grade of primary school. During busy times, a brief turn may be easier than a long stay.

Before or after hiking, mountain lovers and Montbell shoppers

Add Mount Arashima and outdoor activities

Even without a full hike, the Mount Arashima mini lookout, Montbell Echizen Ono Store, canoe experience pond and climbing pinnacle give you a taste of the mountain gateway. After hiking, the shower room or Attakando bath facility offers a way to wash off sweat before leaving.

Montbell → mini lookout → sweets → Attakando / Mount Arashima trailhead.

Check operating days, age requirements, weather and reservation rules for canoeing and climbing.

A half-day visit or first trip to Ono

Continue to Echizen Ono Castle and the old town

After eating and shopping at the roadside station, head to Echizen Ono Castle, Shichiken Morning Market and Yui Station. You can experience the large mountain-foot station and the old castle town in one day. Aim for the sea of clouds or morning market when the time of day suits.

Roadside station → Echizen Ono Castle → Shichiken Morning Market and Yui Station → town cafe.

Check official information on the castle’s seasonal opening, bear sightings and the condition of the uphill route.

Among Fukui’s largest roadside stations, at Mount Arashima’s foot and beside Arashima Interchange

On National Route 158 and the Chubu Jukan Expressway route, this station also serves as a starting point for Ono sightseeing. Food, the mountain and the castle town can all fit into a visit.

Local farm and forest products lead at Arashima Marche

The market carries produce and local goods from Ono’s direct-sales association, including Okuetsu mountain greens and mushrooms. Browse it first for food and shopping; selection varies with season and deliveries.

Food outlets have different hours and winter schedules

Meisui Chaya, Arashima Terrace, Mori no Koshikake, Milk no Sato and Bellside Cafe each have their own hours. Sweets and market shopping can round out a visit when a particular lunch outlet is closed.

Mori no Koshikake’s baumkuchen uses 100% rice flour from Ono-grown Koshihikari

It uses freshly milled rice flour and eggs from Fukui Prefecture. Soft and firm textures and limited-quantity freshly made items give sweets fans several options.

Montbell, canoeing and climbing add outdoor activities

Fukui Prefecture’s first Montbell shop, a canoe experience pond and a climbing pinnacle offer options for families as well as Mount Arashima hikers. Check weather, reservations and age rules before planning an activity.

RV park and 24-hour toilets support longer drives

Reviews of overnight vehicle stays mention the broad, level parking area but also note the distance from the RV park to the toilets. Check the reserved pitch and nighttime route before arrival.

Event listings change with the season

As of July 2026, listings included an insect encounter event, an Ono grape sale and charcoal-grilled Hangesho mackerel sales. Event schedules change; check the current official calendar before making plans.
