How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Check first
Fish shop and today's food-service hours

Check the fresh fish at the fish shop and the opening hours of Umi-bozu and the gelato counter first; that makes it easier to decide whether this is a shopping or dining stop.

If you want to eat
Seafood rice bowls and gelato

The seafood rice bowl changes daily and can sell out in summer. After your meal, try gelato made with plums or seasonal fruit.

If you want to shop
Fish, vegetables, and Ohi souvenirs

If buying fresh fish, consider your journey home and how to keep it chilled. Vegetables and processed foods are easy to browse even on a short break.

If you're with children
Children's Family Center and SEE SEA PARK

Eat at the roadside station, then head to indoor play on rainy days or toward the seaside deck and skate park in fair weather.

If you need a rest
Hotel & Spa Uminpia

Add a bath or pool visit and a break from National Route 27 can become a seaside stay that lasts into the evening.

Takumi's detour notes

Check the fish shop, seafood rice bowls, and gelato first, then turn the stop into half a day by the sea.

Takumi Soma sees Uminpia Ohi as a place where deciding what to eat and buy first helps you explore the surrounding area. Bring a cooler if buying fish, arrive around lunchtime for a seafood rice bowl, or choose seasonal gelato for a sweet treat. Then continue to SEE SEA PARK, the Children's Family Center, or the spa.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Uminpia Ohi stands at the entrance to the Uminpia Ohi complex overlooking Wakasa Bay. Browse vegetables and processed foods from Ohi Town and fresh fish at the direct-sales market; have a seafood rice bowl at the Umi-bozu fast-food counter for lunch, then try gelato made with seasonal fruit or plums. Takumi Soma suggests extending a meal and shopping stop with SEE SEA PARK, the Children's Family Center, El Gaia Ohi, and a spa, all within walking distance.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A place to eat with a view of the sea

Wakasa Bay opens out directly in front of the entrance, making the food court and open-air deck the focus of a meal break. A seafood rice bowl, local vegetable curry, sauce katsudon (a rice bowl topped with pork cutlet and sauce), or jinenjo soba (buckwheat noodles with Japanese mountain yam) lets you sample Ohi flavors even on a short lunch stop.

02

The fish shop and market make shopping part of the visit

The tourism association describes O-i no Sakanaya, inside the direct-sales market, as a place to buy fresh fish. Alongside vegetables, processed foods, crafts, and souvenirs, you can choose something to eat after you get home.

03

Play, learning, and bathing are all within walking distance

The Children's Family Center, SEE SEA PARK, El Gaia Ohi, and a hotel and spa share the area. Depending on the weather and your companions, you can extend your stay beyond a meal.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A break while traveling on National Route 27

Seafood and shopping in 30 minutes

Locate the restrooms and check whether the market, fish shop, and gelato counter are open, then choose one thing to buy. Even without time for a meal, vegetables, processed foods, or a plum sweet can make it feel like a stop by the sea.

Parking lot → restrooms → direct-sales market and fish shop → gelato or souvenirs → departure

The restrooms are reportedly at the far right of the building's front, on the east side, rather than inside.

Adults and groups of friends

Follow lunch with SEE SEA PARK

Arrive at the roadside station before noon for a seafood rice bowl or another local dish. Afterward, walk to SEE SEA PARK for cafes, shops, tourist information, and events. It is a way to continue eating and shopping beside the sea in Uminpia Ohi.

Roadside station → SEE SEA PARK → seaside deck → another stop at the direct-sales market

SEE SEA PARK is closed on Wednesdays, and individual shops have different hours.

Families with children; rainy weather

Add indoor play and learning on a rainy day

Eat at the roadside station, then visit the Children's Family Center or El Gaia Ohi. The large children's center suits preschoolers, while children of elementary-school age and up may enjoy the energy and video exhibits. Together they make a half-day plan less dependent on the weather.

Roadside station → Children's Family Center or El Gaia Ohi → gelato or shopping

The Children's Family Center and El Gaia Ohi are generally closed on Mondays. Arrangements change during summer vacation.

The return leg of a Wakasa drive

Finish the day at the spa

After sightseeing nearby, buy souvenirs at the roadside station and head to Hotel & Spa Uminpia for a bath. An open-air bath or pool can turn a simple meal stop into a relaxing end to a seaside trip.

Nearby sightseeing → shopping at the roadside station → spa → journey home

Before visiting the spa, check its Thursday opening time, maintenance closures, and last admission time.

Seasonal events and family trips

Plan around the waterfront and events in summer

July and August bring the Children's Family Center's summer hours, SEE SEA PARK anniversary events, and roadside-station campaigns. On hot days, keep outdoor time short and break up the visit with indoor facilities and a sweet treat.

Roadside station → indoor facility → evening event or seaside walk

Check the tourism association or official social media for current events, and do not plan around an event after its end date.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Nursing and diaper-changing information for the roadside station itself is limited; checking facilities at SEE SEA PARK and the Children's Family Center can help.

On hot days, favor indoor facilities over the seaside deck. Choose a time when you can keep the meal brief.

Ages 2-3
★★★★☆

The Children's Family Center offers a place to play after eating, helping you keep plans flexible for children who need to run around.

If the lunch wait is long, a gelato stop or short seaside walk can make it easier.

Ages 4-6
★★★★★

You can combine the Children's Family Center's large play equipment with the seaside deck and SEE SEA PARK.

Hours change during summer vacation, so choose which facility to visit first and plan your meal around it.

Elementary-school age
★★★★★

El Gaia Ohi, the skate park, a 3x3 basketball court, and a pool can extend the outing to half a day.

Check the skate park's registration, equipment requirements, and weather. Watch for heat and wind outdoors.

Nursing and diaper changing

Include the facilities at SEE SEA PARK and the Children's Family Center in your plans.

Rainy day

The Children's Family Center, El Gaia Ohi, and SEE SEA PARK offer places to spend time indoors.

Hot day

Limit time on the seaside deck or at the skate park, and focus on dining, shopping, and indoor facilities.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Locate the restrooms after parking

The restrooms are reportedly at the far right of the roadside-station building as you face the front entrance, on the east side. They are not inside, so locate them before shopping.

  2. 2
Choose a meal or shopping first

The fast-food counter mainly opens around lunch; fresh fish needs prompt chilling. Shop first if you are heading home, or eat first if you arrive before noon.

  3. 3
Extend your break with a bath if tired

Hotel & Spa Uminpia is within walking distance. A bath offers a chance to rest before a long drive.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Gelato changes with the seasons

The tourism association describes handmade gelato made with seasonal fruit and vegetables from Ohi Town and its specialty plums. Look for the flavor of the season as well as the regular menu.

Restrooms are at the edge of the building, not inside

The tourism association's FAQ says the restrooms are at the far right of the front entrance, on the east side, and are open 24 hours; there are none inside. Visitors with small children and older visitors may find it helpful to locate them before shopping.

Keep outdoor time short in summer and make use of indoor facilities

Travel accounts and tourism information describe spending less time sightseeing outdoors in extreme heat and relaxing at hotels or facilities instead. At Uminpia Ohi in summer, enjoy the sea view, then head into the Children's Family Center or SEE SEA PARK to cool off.

Check closing days before building an itinerary

The roadside station generally closes on the first and third Mondays, SEE SEA PARK on Wednesdays, and the Children's Family Center and El Gaia Ohi generally on Mondays. For Monday or Wednesday visits, check what is open for meals and nearby activities.

Enjoy the view from the seaside food court

The prefectural tourism site and Wakasa Bay Tourism Federation highlight the food court and open-air deck overlooking Wakasa Bay. In good weather, leave a little time to enjoy the view before or after eating.

Switch plans among nearby facilities

The Children's Family Center, SEE SEA PARK, El Gaia Ohi, spa, marina, and Sunny Mart are in the same area. If dining is crowded, visit one of them first.

Things to check before setting out

  • For a seafood rice bowl, arrive around lunchtime and allow for daily changes or sellouts.
  • Gelato & Cafe changed to 11:00-16:00 from April 1, 2026. Follow the official notice rather than older tourism-site listings of 9:00-17:00.

  • The restrooms are at the far right of the building's front, on the east side. As they are reportedly not inside, locate them first.
  • Bring a cooler bag when buying fresh fish and keep the journey home reasonably short.
  • The seaside can be very hot in summer. Keep visits to the outdoor deck and skate park short and include indoor facilities.

For a meal with a sea view, arrive around lunchtime during the fast-food counter's opening hours.

The seafood rice bowl changes daily, and there are reports that it sells out early in summer.

Buy something to take home

O-i no Sakanaya fish shop, direct-sale vegetables, processed foods

If buying fresh fish, plan how to keep it chilled and when you will get home. Vegetables and processed foods are easy to choose on a short break.

Stop for a sweet treat

Gelato, plum soda, seasonal fruit items

Even without a meal, gelato made with plums or seasonal fruit offers a taste of Ohi Town.

Gelato & Cafe has been open 11:00-16:00 since April 1, 2026. Plan a sweet-treat visit within those hours; it is closed in the morning and after 16:00.

Keep children's wait short

Meal-ticket machine, gelato, a break on the deck

Before buying meal tickets, check that you have cash, which shops are open, and whether seats are available. This helps at the lunchtime peak.

Options when it is crowded

If dining is crowded, shop first or visit a nearby facility to keep your visit moving.
