A Namerikawa trip from late March through May
Make spring firefly squid the focus
In spring, first check the museum's light-show schedule and opening calendar. The early-morning boat tour requires advance booking and may be cancelled, so plan it separately from an ordinary roadside-station stop. A daytime light show, restaurant meal, and shopping also give you plenty of Namerikawa flavor.
Parking → museum reception → light show → Kosai or Michi Cafe → Souvenir Market
The live firefly squid light show is limited to spring. The 2026 early-morning boat tours have ended; wait for the next season's announcement.
A drive focused on food and shopping
Bring Toyama Bay home after lunch and shopping
If you plan lunch at Restaurant Kosai, arrive with time to choose from the seasonal menu. Afterward, browse firefly squid, white shrimp, and deep seawater goods at the Souvenir Market, separating things to eat soon from gifts for home. You might also have time for cafe soft serve or a shake.
Parking → Kosai → Souvenir Market → Michi Cafe Wave → departure
For a meal-focused visit, check restaurant notices first: private bookings, shorter hours, and seasonal menu changes occur.
Rail travelers and short breaks
Take a seaside walk from the railway station
Namerikawa Station is about eight minutes away on foot, so you can visit the sea without a car. Walk to the museum, choose just the cafe or souvenir shop, and step into adjacent Hamanasu Park or onto the shore. Even about an hour can make a satisfying detour.
Namerikawa Station → roadside station → Michi Cafe or souvenirs → Hamanasu Park → Namerikawa Station
The coast can be windy. In rain or winter, focus on indoor stops.
A day to see Toyama Bay from a boat
Add a cruise from summer through autumn
Regular Toyama Bay Coastal Cruises are scheduled from mid-May to late November in 2026. Sailings depend on passenger numbers and weather, so book by phone and check same-day notices first. Use waiting time for the cafe, museum, or seaside walk.
Parking → confirm reception → cafe break → cruise → souvenirs
No service on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, with fewer than five passengers, or in rough weather. Plan other activities too.
Families with children and older companions when the weather is uncertain
On a rainy day, choose indoor exhibits and food
On a rainy day, focus on the museum, restaurant, cafe, and shops rather than forcing in the seaside walk or park. The exhibits include a darkened theater and a touch pool; adults can set a comfortable pace for small children. Visit the 24-hour toilet before leaving.
Parking → toilet → museum → restaurant or cafe → shops
Exhibits and dining have different closed days and hours.
