Naruse's Yoshikawa notes

A brewery station with a useful order for families

Naruse (成瀬 結路) sees Yoshikawa Toji no Sato as more than a destination for sake lovers. Start with the restroom and a sweet treat for children, then visit the brewery and market. If you need a meal, head to Kutsurogi Nagaya; if the weather turns, try Nagamine Onsen. Drinkers, drivers, and children can have different goals and still regroup within the same grounds.

1

Settle the children first

See to restrooms, diaper changing, sweets, and light meals first, and keep the brewery tour short.

2

Explore the brewery as adults

Learn about local sake, brewing water, and sake rice before buying a souvenir.

3

Head to the hot spring in rain

When outdoor sightseeing is off the plan, a bath and meal can still make the trip enjoyable.

4

Go farther in fine weather

Choose Mount Ogami, Oike, or Unomahama by season, and use the station as a half-day starting point.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yoshikawa Toji no Sato brings together a sake brewery, farmers' market, eateries, day-use hot spring, and information and rest facilities along Prefectural Route 30. The station's official site describes views of Mount Ogami, Mount Yoneyama, and the Myoko mountains, plus a multipurpose restroom available 24 hours a day, a diaper-changing table, and a convenience store. Yoshikawa produces rice for sake; at the brewery you can buy local sake made with locally grown sake rice and water associated with the beech forests of Mount Ogami. Visitors who drink can sample and shop for sake, while drivers and children can enjoy sake-lees gelato, freshly picked vegetables, kusa mochi (mugwort rice cakes), Ogami soba noodles, or a hot-spring break. Editor Naruse (成瀬 結路) recommends it as a brewery-centered roadside station where a family with different interests can still enjoy a stop together.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A sake brewery inside the roadside station

The official site says you can tour the brewing equipment free of charge and sample sake at the brewery. Even on a short stop, you can experience Yoshikawa's rice, water, and toji (master brewer) culture as well as shop.

02

Something for visitors who do not drink

Drivers and children can choose sake-lees gelato, freshly picked vegetables at the market, kusa mochi (mugwort rice cakes), steamed seasoned rice, and Ogami soba. A stop built around more than sake is easier for the whole family.

03

Add the hot spring for a half-day break

Nagamine Onsen Yuttari no Sato, within the station area, gives you another option. On rainy days, in winter cold, after swimming, or on the way back from Mount Ogami, you can combine a meal and a bath.

04

Near Kakizaki IC and Sea of Japan side trips

The station is convenient from Kakizaki IC and Ogata Smart IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. Continue to Unomahama Beach, Oike Ikoi no Mori, or Mount Ogami for a half-day route through northern Joetsu, or make a short rest stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Adults stopping to shop

Make the brewery the focus of a short Yoshikawa stop

See the brewing equipment, select local sake, and let only non-drivers enjoy a tasting. Add vegetables and processed foods from the market to get a sense of Yoshikawa's rice and sake traditions even on a short visit.

Park → brewery tour → local sake and sake-lees gelato → Shikisai no Sato → restroom.

Tastings, tours, and available brands vary by day; check in store and follow official notices.

A family driving break

With children, start with facilities and a sweet treat

Use the 24-hour restroom, multipurpose restroom, diaper-changing table, convenience store, sweets, and a little shopping for a reset, rather than expecting a large outdoor playground. Add a light meal at Kutsurogi Nagaya or the hot spring to make a rainy-day stop easier.

Restroom → sweets or light meal → market → Nagamine Onsen if needed.

Parts of the brewery are geared toward adults, so a shorter visit may be easier with children.

A break on rainy, snowy, or cold days

Add the hot spring for a rainy half-day route

When the weather is poor, shop at the station and head to Nagamine Onsen instead of pushing on to Mount Ogami or the coast. Restaurant Ajisai lets you combine a meal, bath, and rest in one place.

Roadside station → Nagamine Onsen → Restaurant Ajisai → onward journey.

Check Nagamine Onsen's Monday closure, last admission, and the restaurant's break between services.

A half-day side trip in northern Joetsu

Sea in summer, Oike in spring or autumn, Mount Ogami for the sky

Vary your destination by season. In summer, head to Unomahama Beach; for outdoor time, visit Oike Ikoi no Mori; and, when you can book, try paragliding at Mount Ogami. The roadside station becomes a starting point for northern Joetsu.

Roadside station → Unomahama / Oike / Mount Ogami → hot spring or onward journey.

Check the beach season, campsite use, paragliding reservations, and wind conditions.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

A multipurpose restroom, diaper-changing table, and convenience store make it suitable for a short break.

Keep the brewery tour short and visit the market and restroom first.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Sake-lees gelato or a light meal can provide a change of pace, but this is not a destination for running around in a playground.

On a rainy day, the hot spring's rest area is another option.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Link a short brewery tour with the market, sweets, and hot spring to keep the visit varied.

On a sunny day, add Oike Ikoi no Mori or Unomahama for time to be active.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Rice, water, sake brewing, and Mount Ogami's nature can make this an educational side trip.

Choose paragliding watching or a walk at Oike according to the weather and children's energy.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The station's official site presents the brewery, market, food, hot spring, and convenience store together

Its 24-hour restroom, diaper-changing table, convenience store, and hot spring, as well as the brewery, make a stop convenient. This sequence of facilities matters for families.

Free tours, tastings, and sake-lees gelato are listed at the brewery

Adults can experience sake while children and drivers have a sweet option in the same facility. Make sure anyone tasting sake is not driving.

The market centers on freshly picked vegetables, with queues reported at opening

If you want particular vegetables or prepared foods, shop first rather than arriving only late in the day.

The eateries have distinct menus and opening schedules

Choose from pressed sushi, kusa mochi, steamed seasoned rice, Ogami soba, light meals, and amazake, a sweet rice drink. Dining facilities list Monday and Thursday closures, so check official information if lunch is your main purpose.

Check the hot spring's last admission and the restaurant's afternoon break

The hot spring lists hours of 10:00–21:00 with last admission at 20:30. Restaurant Ajisai lists a weekday closure between 15:00 and 17:00; timing matters especially when using it as a rainy-day option.

Mount Ogami, Oike, and Unomahama each depend on season and weather

Check reservations and wind for paragliding, walking and camping seasons at Oike, and the beach season at Unomahama. Plan them as distinct outings.
