Yuji Yakumo’s guide to taking it easy

A place to slow down: regain your breath after mountain roads with a bath and a meal.

Yuji Yakumo sees this as a base for a longer pause: sort out parking, toilets, a bath, a meal and somewhere to rest. Choose tofu or ganmodoki at Jonnobi Yokocho, bathe if time allows, take children to Children’s Nature Kingdom, or walk quietly through Oginoshima or Jokanen. Seasons and road conditions shape a visit to Takayanagi, so leave room in your plans.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Jonnobi no Sato Takayanagi is a mountain-village base with the Rakuju no Yu day-use hot spring, lodging, meals, handmade tofu and ganmodoki (fried tofu patties) to take home, and the adjacent Children’s Nature Kingdom. On a short stop, use the toilets and Jonnobi Yokocho shop or rest before or after a bath. With more time, visit Oginoshima’s thatched-roof village, Jokanen garden or the Mt. Kurohime area for a glimpse of Takayanagi’s snowy-region life and food.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Start by unwinding in the hot spring: a mountain-village rest stop worth staying at

Rakuju no Yu is listed as open from 10:00 to 20:00, so you can plan time for its outdoor bath, sauna and rest room. Whether you arrive from Kashiwazaki IC or Tokamachi, mountain roads lead to the station. After parking, try the toilets, Jonnobi Yokocho and then the hot spring to ease the journey.

02

For souvenirs, look first for tofu, ganmodoki, thick fried tofu and Hime no I sake

Jonnobi Yokocho specializes in handmade tofu made with 100% Kashiwazaki-grown soybeans, ganmodoki and atsuage (thick fried tofu). It also stocks local Hime no I sake and bath additives, so you can take home a taste of Takayanagi even without staying for a meal. Stock and sellouts vary by day; choose what you find.

03

Choose Yamadori for lunch, or Ginbei when you want a leisurely meal.

Yamadori serves dishes featuring the tofu workshop’s products, including Jonnobi bento, ganmodoki sauce-katsu rice bowl and soy-milk ramen. Irori Dining Ginbei’s lunch and dinner menus change with the seasons; check its opening days and hours if the meal is the main reason for your visit.

04

If you are bringing children, consider the neighboring Children's Nature Kingdom as well.

The station’s appeal extends beyond its own building. The adjacent Niigata Prefectural Children’s Nature Kingdom is generally open from 9:00 to 17:00 and offers indoor and outdoor play, activities and winter snow play. With bathing, food and play close together, families can adjust plans to suit different interests.

05

Go a little farther to see Takayanagi’s traditional landscape

Oginoshima’s thatched-roof village, Jokanen garden, Mt. Kurohime and Mugimugi Bake are all worthwhile additions to a station visit. Food and a bath are enough for a stop, but with a little extra time, choose a snow-country village, moss garden or mountain view to make the trip to Takayanagi more memorable.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A break en route between Kashiwazaki IC and the Tokamachi area

Get a taste of Takayanagi in 45 minutes

After parking, use the toilets first, then look for tofu, ganmodoki, atsuage and local sake at Jonnobi Yokocho. Even without a bath, taking home one handmade product makes the stop feel worthwhile.

Parking → Toilet → Jonnobi Yokocho → Departure

Since it is a mountainous area, it is best to check the road conditions and arrival time in advance during winter and after evening.

An adults’ outing centered on a day-use bath

Relax for half a day with hot springs and meals

Bathe at Rakuju no Yu, cool down in the rest room, then eat at Yamadori or Ginbei. Whether you eat or bathe first affects the pace of your stay; around lunchtime, plan around restaurant hours.

Yokocho → Meal → Hot spring → Rest room → Souvenir

The rest room may be unavailable when full or booked for a banquet. Ask about private rooms or meal-inclusive plans by the previous day.

Family drive for children from infants to elementary school students

Pair Children’s Nature Kingdom with a hot spring bath

Play at Children’s Nature Kingdom in the morning, eat at the station at midday, then finish with a short bath or shop visit. Choose more indoor activities on rainy or hot days; in winter, combine snow play with a bath so parents and children can pace themselves.

Children's Nature Kingdom → Yamadori → Rakuju no Yu → Yokocho

Children’s Nature Kingdom is generally closed on Mondays; activities and snow play vary by season. Check its opening calendar when planning.

A day when you want to see the original scenery of Takayanagi

Take a short detour to Oginoshima’s thatched-roof village

Use the toilets and shop at the station before heading to Oginoshima’s ring-shaped village. This is a quiet walk past homes and rice fields. Respect it as a place where people live and keep the visit brief rather than treating it as an attraction for a long stay.

Station → Oginoshima Thatched Village → Souvenirs at Yokocho

If you plan to photograph or sketch in the village, follow local guidance and show consideration for residents. Watch for narrow, snowy roads in winter.

Quiet adult trip from June to November

Add Jokanen garden during its open season

Jokanen’s moss garden makes a peaceful detour after a bath or meal. Its open season runs from June to November, with regular Monday closures and possible temporary closures in bad weather. Check that it is open before making it the purpose of your trip.

Station → Jokanen → Hot spring or meal

Jokanen has a long winter closure, and snow conditions can change its opening date. Check the latest notice, especially in early spring.

Touring around Takayanagi on a sunny day

Combine Mt. Kurohime with a bakery stop

If hiking or mountain views are the goal, visit the Mt. Kurohime area first, then stop at Mugimugi Bake or the hot spring on the way back. Bread is sold until it sells out, so visit the bakery early if you have a particular item in mind.

Kurohimeyama area → Mugimugi Bake → Roadside Station

Mountain-road conditions change with weather, snowfall and the road surface. In winter or storms, focus instead on the hot spring and Jonnobi Yokocho.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for toilets, short breaks before or after a bath, and shopping at Jonnobi Yokocho.

A baby bed is listed, and the large car park makes it easy to return to the car. Keep baths and meals short and adjust breaks to the rest room’s availability.

2-3 years old
★★★★☆

Adding the Children's Nature Kingdom makes it easy to switch between play and rest.

Rather than relying on the station alone for active play, alternate Children’s Nature Kingdom, food and a bath. Plan another activity on its usual Monday closure day.

4-6 years old
★★★★★

You can build a day around Children’s Nature Kingdom, snow play, the hot spring and tofu souvenirs.

Choose indoor play on rainy days, outdoor play in fine weather, and a bath after snow play in winter. A toilet stop and a change of clothes before departure can make the journey easier.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Takayanagi’s food, snow-country village, garden and mountain walks can all become learning experiences.

Going beyond Children’s Nature Kingdom to Oginoshima or Jokanen opens up conversations about local life. Avoid packing too much into days with mountain or winter roads.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Combining the station with the hot spring inn makes for a fuller visit

Visitor impressions are stronger when a visit combines bathing, lodging, a meal and rest than when it is limited to a quick shop stop. You can choose a casual roadside break or linger at a mountain-village hot spring inn.

Tofu and Ganmo are worth looking at first on the sales floor.

Official guides and visitor accounts repeatedly mention handmade tofu, ganmodoki and atsuage as distinctive things to buy here. If buying chilled products, consider your journey home and how to keep them cool.

Day-use bath hours are easier to plan around now

A facility notice says it began opening every day except maintenance breaks and opening the hot spring at 10:00 in April 2025. This differs from older closure information. Check the latest official notices instead of relying only on older travel listings that say it closes Tuesday and Wednesday.

Families gain more from the visit when they include Children’s Nature Kingdom

The large children’s center next door offers play for preschool and elementary-school children. Check its opening days and events, then include it in your station visit to give the family more to do.

In winter, prepare for the roads and snow play as well as the hot spring

Takayanagi is a mountain village with a snowy-region heritage. Winter brings hot springs and snow play, but check road surfaces and arrival time and prepare for wet clothes and cooling off after a bath before driving home.

Oginoshima is treated as a living village rather than a tourist facility.

The ring-shaped thatched-roof village is photogenic, but people live there. Follow local guidance for photography or sketching, and make it a short, quiet walk.

Meals have different characteristics depending on the store.

Yamadori works well for a day visitor’s meal. Ginbei is more of a dining destination: check its opening days and seasonal menu. Decide whether you want a light bite or a meal as the focus before you arrive at lunchtime.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Some older travel listings still say the facility closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the hot spring opens at 11:00. Official notices issued from April 2025 say it opens daily except maintenance breaks and the hot spring opens at 10:00.
  • In winter or after the evening, check the road surface and snowfall on Prefectural Route 12, National Route 252, and National Route 253, and plan to avoid taking too many detours after the hot springs.
  • Jonnobi Yokocho’s tofu, ganmodoki and atsuage are chilled products. Think about how to keep them cool if you will continue sightseeing after buying them.
  • Children's Nature Kingdom is scheduled to be closed on Mondays. Check the business day calendar as conditions change due to holidays, events, summer vacation, and playing in the snow in winter.
  • Jokanen has a long winter closure and may close temporarily in strong wind or heavy rain. Check its latest notice before a garden-focused visit.
  • Oginoshima is a residential village. Photography, sketching, and long stays are subject to local guidance and consideration for local residents.
  • The rest room may be unavailable when full or booked for a banquet. Do not count on a long rest there after your bath.
  • If bringing a dog, check updates from Forest Dog Cafe and any lodging plans. Check each facility’s rules before taking a dog inside.
  • Parking capacity is approximate; follow information posted on site.
