How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, on arrival
Check sea conditions and which shops are open

In fine weather, visit the beach or memorial square first. On windy days, focus on the restaurants, shop and Jade Furusato Museum.

For a meal
Cod soup, mozuku soba and seafood

For a quick meal try Restpia; for a view with your seafood, try Isaribi. Have a backup in case seasonal dishes sell out or a restaurant is closed.

For shopping
Crab, rock oysters, mozuku and local fish

The fish at Osakana Center may shape the rest of your trip. Decide whether you are buying for home, your lodging or shipment.

With children
A short visit to the turtle statue and jade hunting

This is a place for a few short stops at the turtle statue, giant jade boulder and beach, rather than a park for hours of play. Keep an adult close to children at the water's edge.

On a rainy day
Park beneath the viaduct and stay mostly indoors

Some parking spaces sit beneath the Hokuriku Expressway viaduct, a useful place to rest in bad weather. Do not force a beach walk.

For a half-day visit
Add Memorial Square and the Community Road

The Oyashirazu cliffs and the history of the old road turn a seafood break into a short Geopark outing.

Yuiro's side-trip notes

This is the kind of roadside station that draws you back to the fish counter after a seafood meal.

Oyashirazu Pier Park has more to offer than its views. First choose cod soup or seafood at a restaurant, then see the day's fish at Osakana Center, and finally walk to the beach or jade display. Eat, shop and learn about the place in that order, and even a short stop leaves a vivid impression of Oyashirazu.

Highlights

Oyashirazu Pier Park is a roadside station beneath the Hokuriku Expressway viaduct that feels distinctly Oyashirazu. Choose cod soup or mozuku seaweed soba at Restpia, browse crab, rock oysters, mozuku and local fish at the Osakana Center, and, if time allows, look for jade on the beach or see the cliffs from Oyashirazu Memorial Square. Its appeal is not new facilities: eating, shopping, looking out to sea and taking a short walk all fit beside National Route 8 and Oyashirazu IC. Parking beneath the viaduct helps on rainy days; in sunshine, the colors of the Sea of Japan stay with you.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A clear reason to eat seafood and shop for fish

Restpia serves a cod soup set meal and mozuku seaweed soba, while Isaribi offers seafood with a view of the Sea of Japan. At Osakana Center you can browse catches from local fishing ports and ask about preparation such as three-piece filleting or shipping. It is easy to eat first, then buy fish to take away.

02

Jade and Oyashirazu's landscape are just outside

Nearby are Jade Furusato Museum's roughly 102-ton jade boulder, the Million sea turtle statue, stone hunting at Oyashirazu Beach and cliff views from Oyashirazu Memorial Square. For children it is a treasure hunt; for adults, a way into the Geopark landscape and the history of the old Hokuriku Road.

03

A different visit in rain and sunshine

On clear days, head for the beach and viewpoint. In rain or wind, parking beneath the viaduct, the shop, restaurants and jade display make an easier plan. Waves and wind change conditions on the beach, so leave room in your schedule and make food and shopping the core of the stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A daytime drive between Toyama, Itoigawa and Joetsu

Turn a Route 8 lunch break into Oyashirazu seafood

Close to Oyashirazu IC, this station fits a trip on either National Route 8 or the Hokuriku Expressway. For lunch, choose cod soup or mozuku soba at Restpia, or seafood with a sea view at Isaribi. Stop at Osakana Center afterward if you want to take fish home too.

Oyashirazu IC or National Route 8 → Restpia / Isaribi → Osakana Center → onward.

Isaribi is generally closed on Wednesdays. Seasonal and popular seafood may sell out as the day goes on.

Families with elementary-school children; people who like stones or the sea

Add a short jade hunt when the sea is calm

Oyashirazu Beach in front of the station is known for jade hunting. Even without a long collecting session, seeing the stone colors and hearing the waves before visiting the huge boulder at Jade Furusato Museum helps children remember the place.

Station → Oyashirazu Beach → Jade Furusato Museum → break at the shop.

Stay back from the shore on days with high waves or strong wind, and on cold winter days. Waterproof shoes make movement easier.

A half-day drive for adults or photography enthusiasts

Add the cliff view for a Geopark side trip

After eating and shopping at the roadside station, drive to Oyashirazu Memorial Square or the Community Road. The landscape where the Northern Alps meet the Sea of Japan, alongside the old road, national highway and expressway, shows another side of Oyashirazu beyond its food.

Station → Oyashirazu Memorial Square → Oyashirazu Community Road / Brick Tunnel.

Parts of the Community Road and Brick Tunnel close in winter, and walking takes time. In the evening or bad weather, consider limiting the trip to Memorial Square.

A bad-weather travel day or a break before or after sleeping in your vehicle

In rain, rest beneath the viaduct and visit the indoor display

The location beneath the Hokuriku Expressway viaduct is especially useful in rain. Skip the beach and viewpoints if conditions are poor; a short circuit of parking, toilets, food, the shop and Jade Furusato Museum still gives you a sense of Oyashirazu.

Park beneath the viaduct → Restpia / shop → Jade Furusato Museum → onward.

Shops are closed at night. If staying a long time in a vehicle, be considerate of other visitors.

After a beach walk, swimming or a long drive

Add a bath after time on the coast

Nearby Oyashirazu Community Center Marutanbo is an option for day bathing and lodging. A bath after the sea breeze or at the end of a long drive can turn a brief stop into a short outing.

Station → Oyashirazu Beach / meal → Oyashirazu Community Center Marutanbo.

Day-bath hours and closing days can change; check the facility's information before traveling there for a bath.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works well for a short toilet stop, indoor display and shop visit.

Eating and resting within easy reach of the car is simpler than a long walk on the beach or at a viewpoint.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A short stop at the sea turtle statue and jade boulder suits this age.

Footing and waves at the water's edge are unpredictable, so adults should keep hold of children's hands. This is not a playground stop.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Beach stone hunting paired with Jade Furusato Museum can be memorable.

A brief search for stones is enough. In strong wind, switch to the indoor display and a meal.

Elementary-school age
★★★★☆

Explore jade, the old road, cliffs and the offshore interchange.

Adding Oyashirazu Memorial Square or the Community Road makes the terrain and road history easier to understand firsthand.

A place for several short discoveries, not hours of play

Link brief stops at the turtle statue, jade boulder and beach with a meal to keep children engaged.

Judge the beach by its waves and wind

Reviews also mention cold weather and waves. Waterproof shoes and an outer layer can help.

At the lunch rush, switch to a snack or shop visit

If a restaurant is crowded, closed or sold out, make the fresh-fish market or souvenirs the focus instead.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Choose parking close to the space beneath the viaduct

In rain or wind, first look for a space that shortens the walk.

  2. 2
Pick either a meal or shopping as your priority

Instead of covering everything, decide whether cod soup, fresh fish or the jade display is your main stop.

  3. 3
Add a viewpoint only in good weather

Oyashirazu Memorial Square is a short drive away, but you will enjoy it more if you skip it in rough weather.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Pier Park Square

The Million sea turtle statue and ceramic mural make this a recognizable gathering point for photographs.

Osakana Center

The selection changes with the catch and seasonal products. Its everyday fresh fish is the draw, more than a food event.

Oyashirazu Beach

A gateway to swimming, jade hunting and rock fishing. Weather and waves greatly change how you can use it.

Oyashirazu Community Road

Events such as the Sea Weston Festival connect Oyashirazu's history with the mountains and the sea.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Osakana Center is worth visiting even just to browse

Seeing the day's crab, rock oysters, mozuku and local fish is a draw in itself. Reviews also mention low fish prices and requests for preparation; with a cooler ready, shopping becomes more appealing.

A jade hunt begins by checking the sea

Oyashirazu Beach is often mentioned for jade hunting, but wind, waves and cold change the experience. Even a short look at the beach stones before entering Jade Furusato Museum makes the giant boulder more impressive.

Parking beneath the viaduct is especially useful in rain

The space under the Hokuriku Expressway helps on rainy or snowy travel days. When the view is poor, skip the beach and make a short circuit of parking, toilets, food and the shop.

Memorial Square adds depth to the view

The station alone works as a seafood stop, but a few minutes' drive to Oyashirazu Memorial Square or the Community Road reveals the cliffs and road history. On clear days with time to spare, consider the viewpoint first.

Come for the food and landscape, even if the facilities feel old

Some reviews mention the age of the facilities, but the seafood, jade, beach and cliff views give the visit a clear purpose. Think of it as a compact taste of Oyashirazu rather than a new multipurpose complex.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Hours vary by shop. Restpia and Osakana Center are generally 9:30–17:00; Isaribi is generally 11:00–16:00 and closed Wednesdays.
  • Winter hours and closures may change. If seafood or bathing is your main aim, check the official site or the facility's latest information.
  • Oyashirazu Beach is stony and exposed to waves, wind and cold. For jade hunting, think about waterproof shoes, an outer layer and hand safety.
  • If buying seafood at Osakana Center, check your cooling arrangements and the time until you get home.
  • The Oyashirazu Community Road and Brick Tunnel require walking time, and some sections close in winter. For a brief stop, consider just Oyashirazu Memorial Square.
  • Shops are closed at night and early in the morning. Even with convenient parking beneath the viaduct, be considerate of other visitors during a long stay.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Local specialty meal
    Cod soup set meal
A Restpia staple. Check the day's menu for availability.
  • Local flavor
    Oyashirazu mozuku soba
A light way to try the local seaweed flavor of Itoigawa.
  • Seafood
Crab tempura rice bowl / seafood rice bowl
Possible seasonal dishes at Isaribi. Watch for sellouts and closures.
  • To take home
Crab, rock oysters, mozuku and local fish
Seafood souvenirs to browse at Osakana Center; offerings depend on the season and the catch.
  • Sweet treat
    Hisui ice cream
An easy taste of Oyashirazu even on a short break.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
A full meal

Cod soup set meal / seafood rice bowl / crab tempura rice bowl

Seafood is the main lunch draw. Decide whether you want an easy meal at Restpia or to eat beside the sea at Isaribi.

Isaribi closes Wednesdays; seasonal dishes may sell out or be temporarily unavailable.

A light bite

Mozuku soba / hisui ramen / hisui ice cream

These are alternatives when you want to avoid a heavy meal during a long drive. They still give your short stop a coastal flavor.

Check the signs at each shop for ordering methods, including any meal-ticket machine.

Buy food to take away

Crab / rock oysters / mozuku / local fish

At Osakana Center, choosing fish for dinner or home is part of the fun. Ask about preparation or shipping if you want to enjoy the purchase after the trip.

Fresh fish varies by season, catch and time of day. A cooler bag makes buying easier.

Choose a season

Spring red snow crab / summer rock oysters / autumn salmon roe / winter monkfish and cod soup

The seafood worth seeking changes with the season. If seafood is the main reason for your visit, choosing one target beforehand helps focus the trip.

The seasons are only a guide; the catch and shop openings take priority.

A fallback when it is busy

Shop souvenirs / fresh-fish sales / beach walk

A plan built around one restaurant can fail if it is closed or crowded. If you cannot eat there, you can buy fish, look at the sea or visit the jade display instead.

Check waves and wind before going onto the beach; it may be best to stay back.
