How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Find parking near your destination and locate the toilets

The grounds are extensive; with children, deciding your route first reduces backtracking.

For a meal
Consider miso ramen, sushi, seafood rice bowls or bread

Each shop has different hours and closing days. Wood-fired pizza restaurant Kamaemon was listed as temporarily closed until further notice in the September 2026 official schedule. Keep a second lunch option for peak hours.

To take home
Vegetables, rice, kanzuri and Sea of Japan seafood

A cooler bag makes it easier to continue your trip after buying fresh fish.

With children
Let them move around on the lawn before eating

The lawn is generally open from sunrise to sunset; the cooking shelter is open 9:00–17:00. Both close in winter.

On a rainy day
Link Kubikino Information Center, the farm shop, bakery and a meal

Indoor food and shopping provide plenty to do without adding outdoor play.

Using the expressway
Check access from Arai PA and Smart IC in advance

You can walk from the upbound PA, but guidance says there is no direct access from the downbound PA.

Yuiro’s family route notes

At a large station, the first 10 minutes can make the rest of the day easier.

At Michi-no-Eki Arai, Yuiro Makabe starts by locating parking, toilets, the lawn and dining choices. If children need to get outside, visit the lawn first; on a rainy day, head for indoor meals and shopping. There is a lot of pleasure in choosing food here, and cutting down on backtracking makes the visit easier for the whole family.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Arai is worth more than a quick rest stop. Around the Kubikino Information Center are Shikisaikan Hidanan, Shikisaikan Myoko, Nihonkai Seafood Center, Campagna Arai, Shokudo Misa, Kitokito Sushi, a bakery, convenience store, hotel and lawn plaza. You can reach the area from Route 18 or the Arai PA/Smart IC side of the Joshinetsu Expressway. For a family drive, choose a parking area first, then use the toilets and lawn to stretch. At lunch, choose among miso ramen, seafood, sushi and bread; before leaving, shop for vegetables, rice, kanzuri (a fermented chili seasoning) and seafood from the Sea of Japan. On rainy days, focus on indoor meals and shopping; in fair weather, add the lawn or Hida Historical Village. It is a practical Myoko stop in any season.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Choose seafood and mountain produce in one stop

Alongside Myoko farm produce, rice, kanzuri (fermented chili seasoning), bread and light meals, Nihonkai Seafood Center offers seafood and crab, while Echigontei serves seafood rice bowls. It is a chance to shop for the sea while driving in the mountains. If you have a cooler bag, look at the fish and farm stalls before eating, decide what to buy, then choose lunch.

02

Plenty of food choices when family tastes differ

Options include Shokudo Misa miso ramen, Kitokito Sushi, Ramen Sho, Kamaemon, Echigontei, light meals at Campagna Arai and bread at PATRASHE. Kamaemon was listed as temporarily closed until further notice in the September 2026 official schedule. Popular places can draw crowds at weekend lunch, so keep bread, the food court, sushi, seafood or ramen as alternatives.

03

Choose parking and toilets first on this large site

The facilities spread out, including across Route 18, and first-time visitors may have a walk to their chosen shop. With children, locate the toilets and rest area in Kubikino Information Center, the lawn and your dining place before shopping to avoid backtracking.

04

Use the lawn on fine days and indoor dining and shopping in rain

The lawn suits a break for children or barbecue use, but closes in winter and is affected by weather. In rain or snow, make a shorter indoor route through dining, the farm shop, seafood center, bakery and information center. On fine days, add Hida Historical Village or Myoko Sunshine Land.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Weekend drives on Route 18; lunch breaks toward Myoko and Joetsu

Split lunch and shopping to suit the family

Use the toilets near Kubikino Information Center first, then choose a meal. With miso ramen, sushi, seafood, pizza and bread available, moving to a second choice can be easier than having everyone queue at one crowded restaurant. After eating, visit the farm shop and seafood center for something to take home.

Parking → toilets → check meal options → lunch → farm shop and seafood → Kubikino Information Center

Shokudo Misa and seafood places can attract weekend lunch crowds. Check each shop’s closing days and last orders, and keep bread or light meals in mind.

Families with preschool and primary-school children; breaks on long drives

Let children move before going to eat

When children are tired of the car, spend a short time on the lawn before rushing to eat. Toilets, lawn, meal and shopping make a workable sequence. In winter or rain, skip the lawn and link the information center with nearby indoor shops.

Park near the target area → toilets → lawn plaza → meal → farm shop and bread

The lawn is affected by sun, snow and wind. Bring hats and drinks in summer; in winter, switch to a short indoor visit.

Joshinetsu Expressway travelers between Nagano, Joetsu and Myoko

Use it like an expressway PA for a short essentials stop

The adjoining Arai PA and Smart IC make a short stop for toilets, a convenience store, a light meal or tourism information possible. If time is short, choose Kubikino Information Center, Lawson, the bakery or farm shop rather than trying to cover the entire site.

Check route from PA/Smart IC → toilets → light meal or tourism information → depart

Access conditions differ by expressway direction. Guidance says the downbound PA has no direct access, so check your route before travel.

Bad weather, snow and drives with grandparents

Choose an indoor meal and shopping route on rainy days

In rain, focus on indoor dining, the farm shop, seafood, bakery and information center rather than the lawn or a walk nearby. Choosing your shops before parking reduces exposed walks and backtracking across this large site.

Park near your destination → meal → farm shop and seafood → information center

Snow and road conditions affect walking distances in winter. Narrow your shop choices when traveling with children or older people.

Myoko and Joetsu sightseeing in fair weather; short family outings

Combine food at the station with a nearby attraction for half a day

Eat and shop at the station, then choose Hida Historical Village for history, Myoko Sunshine Land for an amusement park, or Lotte Arai Resort for nature activities. Starting at the station lets you handle meals and toilets before heading out.

Nearby attractions are affected by seasonal schedules and weather. Check official operating days before setting out.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Up to age 1
★★★☆☆

Toilets, nursing and a short indoor break are the focus.

Link Kubikino Information Center and indoor shops for a short visit. The site is large, so choose parking before moving with a stroller.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

A short run on the lawn can make mealtime easier.

There is room to move. In rain or winter, switch to indoor bread, light meals and a toilet break.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Lawn, bread, sushi and ramen offer enough variety to hold their interest.

There are plenty of shops when food preferences differ. On longer shopping visits, move around on the lawn first.

Primary-school children
★★★★★

Easy to add Hida Historical Village or the amusement park after eating.

On fine days, extend beyond the station to a history walk at Samegao Castle Ruins or Myoko Sunshine Land for a half-day outing.

Check first

This is a large station; decide where to return before dining or shopping.

On fine days

Depending on sun and wind, even 10–20 minutes before or after a meal can be a welcome change.

On rainy days

Skip outdoor play and use the bakery or information center for a rest.

Shopping

If buying fresh fish or prepared food, allow for the time you will spend on later stops.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Lawn plaza

Established in the east area in 2020, this plaza supports children’s outdoor play, exercise, reservation-based barbecues and disaster-response use. It closes in winter and depends on weather, so plan it as an option for a fine day.

Kubikino Information Center event gallery

Myoko Tourism Bureau says the center has an event gallery used for community activities. In rain, it is an easy place to combine tourism information with a break.

Seasonal sales at Shikisaikan Hidanan

Official notices feature farm-shop events such as summer vegetable sales and festivals, and autumn events for new rice and seasonal flavors. Farm produce events can be brief, so check the official notice shortly before visiting.

Role as a disaster-response roadside station

Michi-no-Eki Arai also provides disaster information and has regional hub functions through its lawn, parking, accommodation and dining. On an ordinary trip, the broad parking area and 24-hour facilities offer reassurance.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Plan for a wait if Shokudo Misa is the main reason for visiting

Travel and food reviews often mention the miso ramen, generous portions and crowds even on weekdays. Allow extra time if Misa is your priority; with children, keep bread or sushi as a second option.

Fresh fish and vegetables make a worthwhile shopping stop

Jalan, tourism articles and the seafood center’s official site point to interest in vegetables, fish, crab, seafood and grilled seafood. It is a memorable place to buy fish on the way back from Niigata or Joetsu.

Its size is an asset, but parking location matters

Reviews describe a large, long site with facilities on both sides of the road and recommend choosing parking carefully. On a first visit, parking near your target shop and toilets reduces walking.

Indoor dining and the lawn work well together with children

Family reviews mention children’s chairs and kids’ meals at restaurants; official guidance describes the lawn and cooking shelter. On a long drive, a short period of movement as well as a meal can help.

Expressway access is convenient, with different routes by direction

Official and Hokuriku roadside-station guidance highlights the nearby Arai PA and Smart IC, while warning that the downbound PA has no direct access. If stopping during an expressway journey, check the route including entrances from ordinary roads.

Seasonal events at the farm shop and lawn need a current-date check

Official notices as of July 2026 listed short events such as a fixed-price summer vegetable sale, a summer vegetable festival and a police band performance. Check current notices before planning around an event.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • This is a large station. Decide on your target shop, toilets and meeting place first to reduce backtracking.
  • For Shokudo Misa or seafood at lunch, consider a bakery, food court, sushi or ramen as a backup if crowded. Kamaemon was listed as temporarily closed in September 2026.
  • If buying fresh fish, consider a cooler bag, ice packs and the time you will spend on stops before getting home.
  • The lawn suits families on fine days but closes in winter and is affected by weather. Choose indoor stops on rainy days.
  • When approaching from the expressway, check the route between Arai PA/Smart IC and the ordinary-road side in advance.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Try a Joetsu-area flavor

Shokudo Misa miso ramen / pork-soup set meals

A substantial lunch choice. Its miso ramen with garlic and onion draws visitors to the station itself.

It can get busy; switch to another meal option if the wait does not fit your plans.

Shop for Sea of Japan food

Crab / fresh fish / sashimi / grilled seafood / seafood rice bowls

Nihonkai Seafood Center and Echigontei let you combine seafood shopping and a meal, including on the way back toward Nagano.

Selection changes with deliveries, weather and season. A cooler bag helps with onward stops.

Take local ingredients home

Myoko rice / local vegetables / wild mountain vegetables / fruit / kanzuri / processed foods

At Shikisaikan Hidanan, Shikisaikan Myoko and Campagna Arai, choose local foods to use at home. Kanzuri is a fermented chili seasoning.

Morning-picked and seasonal produce may sell out later in the day. Look around before eating if there is something you want.

Choose a child-friendly or light bite

PATRASHE bread / food-court snacks / soft-serve ice cream / convenience store

Useful when restaurant waits are long or children are getting hungry. Family members can choose different places and still enjoy a station break.

Bread is sold until supplies run out; an earlier visit offers more choice.

Let family members choose different meals

Sushi / ramen / pizza / seafood / beef bowls

Adults can choose seafood, children bread or a light meal, and grandparents sushi, for example. The large range is an advantage of this station.

Kamaemon wood-fired pizza was listed as temporarily closed until further notice in the September 2026 official schedule. Shops are spread out, so agree on a meeting place and time.
