Check first
Closure and redevelopment updates

Do not expect operating facilities on site. Check Kashiwazaki City's redevelopment page and the hours of nearby businesses before setting out.

If it is sunny
Koibito Misaki and Oumigawa Station

Continue to places with views of the sea, Yoneyama Bridge, and sunset so the outing extends beyond the hill.

If it rains
Kashiwazaki Collection Village

Visit Chigo no Ie, Kurofune-kan, and Ai Mingei-kan, primarily indoors. Check Wednesday and winter closures.

For food
Go to an operating seaside business

The roadside station itself is closed; check nearby seafood, souvenir, and light meal businesses before going.

With children
Keep the hill stop short

The hill's planned play equipment is not in use. Plan toilet stops, meals, indoor visits, and coastal walks at separate places.

The editor’s detour notes

Think of this as a coastal route families can use today, not an operating station.

The editor starts with what can actually be used now. The hill has no operating shop or restaurant, but arranging toilets, meals, rainy day options, and breaks for children at nearby places makes the Oumigawa sea and bridge an enjoyable detour. Keep planned facilities separate from what is available on the present trip.

1

Keep the hill stop short

Check current conditions and enjoy the view of the closed site.

2

Eat by the sea

Find fresh fish, snacks, and souvenirs at operating nearby businesses.

3

Go indoors in rain

Make Kashiwazaki Collection Village the main stop.

4

Head to the coast in sunshine

Add views from Koibito Misaki, Oumigawa Station, and the beach.

Highlights

Roadside Station Kaze no Oka Yoneyama, on a hill in Kashiwazaki City's Oumigawa area, is currently closed. Rather than coming for a shop or restaurant, combine views of the Sea of Japan and Yoneyama Bridge with Oumigawa's coast and Kashiwazaki Collection Village. Kashiwazaki City aims to reopen it in fiscal 2030 as a place for views and relaxation, with a planned observation deck, lawn, large play equipment, dog run, and food truck area. With children, check conditions on the hill, then head toward operating seaside businesses for meals and shopping. In good weather, add Koibito Misaki and Oumigawa Station.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A hill with views, awaiting reopening rather than serving as an operating station

The roadside station itself has been closed since 2015. Come for views of the sea and Yoneyama Bridge from the hill, then continue to nearby museums or the coast. Do not count on the station for lunch or shopping as you would at an operating roadside station.

02

Plans for a family friendly hill, targeting fiscal 2030

Kashiwazaki City's redevelopment plan includes a road rest facility with toilets, parking, an observation deck, lawn, large play equipment, a dog run, a food truck area, flowerbeds, and planting. Rather than a permanent commercial facility, the plan envisages weekend vendors and events; views and outdoor play are expected to be the main attractions after reopening.

03

Plan meals, shopping, and rainy days around nearby places

Nearby options include Kashiwazaki Collection Village, Oumigawa Station, Oumigawa Beach, Koibito Misaki, and seaside seafood and souvenir businesses. Choose the coast and cape on a clear day, or Collection Village in rain or strong wind. Use operating businesses for food and shopping while the roadside station remains closed.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 30 to 60 minute stop to check current conditions and enjoy the view

See the closed hill, then head toward the sea

Rather than using the roadside station as an operating facility, see where the hill is and learn about the redevelopment, then continue to Koibito Misaki or Oumigawa Station. On a clear day, the Sea of Japan and red Yoneyama Bridge make even a brief stop memorable.

Hill area → Koibito Misaki → Oumigawa Station or Oumigawa Beach

Conditions on site may change. If there is construction or access is restricted, do not enter the grounds; use a nearby viewpoint instead.

Indoor visits for families, including those with grandparents

Make Collection Village the focus on a rainy day

Weather can change the experience of the Oumigawa hill considerably. In rain or strong wind, visit Chigo no Ie, Kurofune-kan, and Ai Mingei-kan at Kashiwazaki Collection Village first, then go to an operating nearby business for food.

Kashiwazaki Collection Village → nearby restaurant → Koibito Misaki if the weather improves

Collection Village is generally closed on Wednesdays and in winter. It closes earlier in November.

A seaside outing with primary school age children or older

Combine the visit with Oumigawa Beach in summer

Oumigawa Beach lies just below Oumigawa Station. During its opening season, make swimming or play near the river mouth the main activity and keep the hill visit to a look at the scenery. Plan meals, changing, and showers around facilities at the beach.

Oumigawa Station → Oumigawa Beach → Koibito Misaki → return journey

The beach season is generally early July to mid August. Check the day's information on lifeguards, parking, beach huts, and weather.

A preview visit for those looking forward to the planned fiscal 2030 reopening

Look ahead to a family friendly hill after reopening

Kashiwazaki City's plan includes an observation deck, lawn, large play equipment, dog run, food truck area, and flowerbeds. For now, explore the surrounding area where permitted and imagine the future views of the sea and bridge and a place for children to rest.

Read Kashiwazaki City's redevelopment updates → view the hill where permitted → eat and shop nearby

The plan and timing may change. Check the city's latest information just before visiting.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★☆☆☆

The roadside station itself is closed, so do not rely on it for nursing or diaper changes.

If you need indoor facilities, arrange a stop at Kashiwazaki Collection Village or an operating nearby facility first, and keep any hill visit brief.

Ages 2 to 3
★★☆☆☆

Use this as a short transition between car stops, not as a playground now.

Large play equipment and a lawn are planned for after redevelopment. For now, do not schedule a long play stop here.

Ages 4 to 6
★★★☆☆

A short stop to see the sea, bridge, and trains can work well.

Add Koibito Misaki, Oumigawa Station, or Oumigawa Beach for variety. Switch to indoor exhibits in strong wind or rain.

Primary school age
★★★★☆

Oumigawa Station, Yoneyama Bridge, and the Fukuura Eight Views add interest to the area.

In swimming season, choose Oumigawa Beach; on fine days throughout the year, Koibito Misaki; and in rain, Collection Village.

Toilets

The roadside station itself is closed. With children, use an operating nearby facility before heading to the hill.

Meals

Choose an operating seaside business, central Kashiwazaki, or a beach hut during Oumigawa Beach's opening season.

Rainy days

Make Kashiwazaki Collection Village the main destination instead of relying on the hill or coast.

Play after reopening

The lawn, large play equipment, and dog run are in the redevelopment plan. Check when and which areas actually open.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Planned observation deck

The plan makes use of views toward the Sea of Japan, Yoneyama Bridge, and Mount Yoneyama. Clear days and evenings could be especially rewarding.

Lawn and large play equipment

These planned facilities would give families a reason to stay. They are not yet open; for play now, head to nearby beaches or indoor facilities.

Food truck area

The plan favors events and weekend vendors over permanent commercial facilities. After reopening, check vending dates before visiting for food.

Dog run and flower covered hill

The plan allows space for visitors with dogs and seasonal flowers. Consider warmth or sun protection when coastal winds are strong.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Views and outdoor play are planned to take priority over permanent shops

In an update from June 2026, Kashiwazaki City set fiscal 2030 as the target for reopening, with plans for an observation deck, lawn, large play equipment, food truck area, and dog run. As of May 2026, no permanent commercial facility was planned, so check event vendors and nearby businesses for meals and shopping.

Collection Village is a rainy day option

Kashiwazaki Collection Village consists of Chigo no Ie, Kurofune-kan, and Ai Mingei-kan. It makes a useful indoor stop in the same Oumigawa area. Check its Wednesday and winter closures; when the weather turns, putting it before a coastal visit makes family plans easier to adjust.

Extend a clear day to Koibito Misaki and Oumigawa Station

Koibito Misaki is a scenic spot overlooking the Sea of Japan and Sado Island, while Oumigawa Station is known for its proximity to the sea. Linking the bridge, cape, station, and shore offers a fuller feel for Kashiwazaki's coastline than a hill stop alone.

In summer, Oumigawa Beach can be the main stop for children

Oumigawa Beach is just below JR Oumigawa Station and is generally open from early July to mid August. Its pebbles and sand, play near the river mouth, beach huts, and temporary toilets mean a summer family visit depends more on beach preparations than on the closed roadside station.

Plan meals and shopping at operating businesses

There are nearby facilities selling Sea of Japan seafood and souvenirs, but renovation and redevelopment can change their hours. Keep lunch flexible and have an operating shop, central Kashiwazaki, or a summer beach hut in mind so hungry children do not derail the day.

Wind and season change the coastal experience

In fine weather the hill and cape offer strong views, but wind, rain, winter museum closures, and swimming season crowds change how a visit works. From spring through autumn, consider flowers and the coast; in winter and early spring, check indoor opening dates and allow less outdoor walking.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The roadside station itself is closed. Do not plan on a shop, restaurant, or the usual roadside station rest facilities there.
  • Kashiwazaki City is targeting a reopening in fiscal 2030. Follow its updates on construction, access, and changes to the plan.
  • Plan to eat and shop at operating nearby businesses or in central Kashiwazaki; leave your lunch timing flexible.
  • In rain or strong wind, Kashiwazaki Collection Village is a more comfortable main stop for families.
  • In summer, check Oumigawa Beach's opening period, parking, beach huts, lifeguards, and showers before going.
  • Koibito Misaki and Oumigawa Station offer strong views in clear weather; keep visits short in winter or rough weather.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Shopping
Sea of Japan seafood and souvenirs
Check whether nearby Nihonkai Fresh Fish Center related businesses are open before visiting
  • Light meals
Mackerel sandwiches and beachside grilled snacks
Availability depends on the opening and renovation status of nearby businesses
  • Rainy day
A break after Kashiwazaki Collection Village
Make the museum visit the main activity and eat at a separate business
  • Seasonal
Summer beach huts at Oumigawa Beach
Visit when the swimming beach is open and the huts are operating
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Operating seaside businesses

The roadside station restaurant is unavailable. Plan to eat at an operating seaside seafood or souvenir facility, another nearby restaurant, or in central Kashiwazaki.

Nearby businesses may also be renovating or operating seasonally, so check the specific shop.

Shopping

Fresh fish, seafood products, and Echigo souvenirs

Shop at nearby Nihonkai Fresh Fish Center related businesses or produce and souvenir outlets in the city, rather than at Kaze no Oka Yoneyama. A cooler bag helps on the summer journey home.

A break for children

Sweets, snacks, and indoor exhibits

Do not linger at the closed hill. Head to Collection Village or an operating restaurant, especially when it is rainy or windy.

Summer by the sea

Beach huts at Oumigawa Beach

This is an option only during the beach season. On a beach day, prioritize changing facilities, showers, parking, and heat precautions as well as food.

After reopening

Food trucks and weekend vendors

Kashiwazaki City's plan favors events and weekend stalls over permanent shops. After reopening, checking vendor dates may be useful.
