A Route 8 lunch break
Arrive before noon for tarajiru
If you want the restaurant, go there as soon as you arrive. Warm up with a tarajiru cod soup or simmered offal set meal, then see the overnight-dried genge fish and border-area souvenirs in the shop. Even a 30–60 minute stop can make a satisfying break.
Parking → Restaurant → Shop → Road information → Departure
The restaurant generally closes earlier than the shop. For a late lunch or winter visit, check official notices.
Sunny days with calm waves
Make a short seaside trip to look for stones at Ichiburi Coast
Use the station's toilet and get a drink, then make the short trip to Ichiburi Coast. Jade hunting is more enjoyable as a walk observing stones' weight and color than as a promise of finding jade. Return to the shop for seafood to take home.
Station → Ichiburi Coast → Shop → Kaido no Matsu pine if time allows
Shorten the beach walk in high waves, strong wind, or rain. Keep young children away from the water's edge.
A half-day drive for adults
Add the Oyashirazu cliffs and old highway history
For more than a meal and shopping, head toward the Oyashirazu Community Road and Brick Tunnel. Seeing how close the sea and cliffs are, and learning why the old road was difficult to cross, gives the station's name a stronger place in your journey.
Station → Oyashirazu Community Road → Oyashirazu Pier Park
Some walking-path sections close in winter, and footing varies. Choose suitable shoes and check the weather.
Days unsuitable for beach walking
On a rainy day, focus on border souvenirs and the Jade Hometown Museum
In rain or strong wind, compare Niigata and Toyama souvenirs at the station and keep the visit to the restaurant or a little shopping. For more local interest, go to the Jade Hometown Museum inside Oyashirazu Pier Park to see the scale of its large jade indoors.
Station → Shop → Oyashirazu Pier Park → Jade Hometown Museum
Indoor facilities have their own opening hours. Coastal weather can change quickly, so avoid forcing in an outdoor walk.
Travel from Niigata to Toyama or from Toyama to Niigata
Buy souvenirs before or after crossing the border
Close to the Toyama border, the station lets you shop for souvenirs from both sides at once. Choose sweets for colleagues or family, local sake, or processed seafood here, leaving the next stop free for sightseeing.
Parking → Shop → Toilets → Return to National Route 8
