Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Matsudai Furusato Kaikan marks the entrance to the Matsudai area, where National Route 253 meets Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line. Browse terraced-field rice, local sake and snow country specialties at the Furusato gift shop; pick up drinks or snacks at the 24-hour FamilyMart; and, at lunchtime, try a set meal made with Hoshitoge terraced-field rice and local ingredients at the reopened Kikuya Kitchen. Eat, shop and ask for local information here, then continue to Matsudai Nohbutai, Matsudai Castle Ruins Park, the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces or Shibatoge Onsen. The station works best as a starting point for the wider area, rather than as a large shopping complex.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A rail station and roadside station together at the entrance to Matsudai

The station adjoins Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line and is easy to reach by car from National Route 253. Whether arriving from the Muikamachi Interchange or Joetsu, you can stop here for a break, shopping and visitor information before or after exploring the snow country's rural hills.

02

Start with terraced rice, local sake and snow country foods

At the Furusato gift shop, look for rice from the Hoshitoge terraces, sake from around Tokamachi, anbo, shinko mochi and foods made with snow-stored carrots. Anbo and shinko mochi are local sweets. This is a place to pick out a few local flavors on your journey, rather than a large farmers' market.

03

Kikuya Kitchen for lunch, with a 24-hour convenience store outside its hours

Kikuya Kitchen has announced that it has reopened, serving meals made with Hoshitoge terraced-field rice and local ingredients. Its hours focus on lunchtime and may change. If you are coming specifically to eat there, check the official notices; if it is closed, FamilyMart inside the building offers snacks.

04

Add Nohbutai, the terraces or an onsen for a half-day outing

Matsudai Nohbutai is on the south exit side of the station, linking rural art and food with a walk toward Matsudai Castle Ruins Park. The Hoshitoge Rice Terraces and Shibatoge Onsen are also a short drive away, making it easy to extend a quick stop into half a day among snow country scenery. An onsen is a Japanese hot spring bath.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 20–40 minute shopping break

Buy terraced rice and sake on a short stop

After parking, use the restroom, then browse terraced rice, local sake, anbo and shinko mochi at the Furusato gift shop. Rather than covering a huge farmers' market, choose a few tastes of Matsudai to remember the trip by.

Parking → Restrooms → Furusato gift shop → FamilyMart → Depart

Opening hours may be shorter in winter or toward evening. Stop earlier if buying souvenirs is essential.

A half-day drive for adults, or combined with a rail trip

Walk to Nohbutai after lunch

Have lunch at Kikuya Kitchen, then head to Matsudai Nohbutai on the south exit side. It brings together art, Satoyama Shokudo and walking information for the Matsudai Castle area, so you can leave the car and explore on foot.

Roadside station → Kikuya Kitchen → Matsudai Nohbutai → Toward Matsudai Castle Ruins Park

Nohbutai has Tuesday and Wednesday closures, and its winter schedule and artwork viewing periods vary. Some outdoor works cannot be seen when there is snow.

Spring and autumn reflections, early-morning photography and rural scenery drives

Prepare for the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

Before heading to the terraces, get drinks and snacks, use the restroom and check road information. Hoshitoge draws crowds during the seasons when water reflects the sky and on mornings with a sea of clouds. Its parking and viewpoints can be unavailable in winter, so prepare at the station before setting off.

Roadside station → National Route 253 → Toward Ikejiri → Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

The terraced landscape includes privately owned fields tended by farmers. Follow the tourism association's guidance on parking, access, early-morning noise and winter roads.

Rainy days, winter driving fatigue and three-generation outings

Finish a snow country drive at the onsen

Buy souvenirs and snacks at the station, then continue to Shibatoge Onsen Unkai. Its open-air bath looks toward the mountains and terraced fields, offering a taste of Matsudai's scenery even when you have no energy left for a scenic walk.

Roadside station → Shibatoge Onsen Unkai → Homeward journey

Day-use bathing is closed on Wednesdays, and shorter bathing hours have been announced for winter. Allow extra travel time on snowy roads.

Spaces used for events

Official notices have described a kei-truck market held for the Matsudai Kannon Festival, along with taiko drumming, performances and fireworks. Kei trucks are small pickup trucks used as market stalls. For an upcoming event, check the station's official notices and Tokamachi City's traffic restrictions before making plans.

A signature winter event in Matsudai. Official notices have described a March event with food stalls and special activities. Expect snowy roads and busy parking; the roadside station is a practical place to stock up and meet your group.

Nohbutai's art, food, farming and snow-play programs vary by season. It is within walking distance of the roadside station, so check what is open that day when planning nearby events.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • If coming for Kikuya Kitchen, check official notices for reopening updates, shortened hours and closures.
  • Gift shop hours can change in winter and around New Year. For souvenirs, aim for a stop around midday.
  • For the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces, follow the tourism association's guidance on private land, parking, early-morning noise and winter closures.
  • In winter, expect snow and ice on National Route 253 and nearby mountain roads; leave room in your schedule rather than packing in both the onsen and terraces.
  • Nohbutai closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and artwork viewing periods vary. Check its opening day before walking there after a meal.
  • The roadside station connects directly to Matsudai Station, so rail passengers can plan a short shopping and visitor-information stop around train times.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make Kikuya Kitchen your first lunch option for dishes using Hoshitoge terraced-field rice and local ingredients. Hours are approximately 11:30–14:00, with Monday and Tuesday closures announced; check official notices before you go.

For food to take home, start with terraced rice, local sake, anbo, shinko mochi and snow-stored carrot products. Stock and seasons vary, so keep more than one option in mind.

If you miss the restaurant, the 24-hour FamilyMart can supply drinks, snacks and treats for the car before you head onto mountain roads or toward the terraces.

If walking to Nohbutai, also check whether Echigo-Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo is open. Having both the roadside station restaurant and Nohbutai's restaurant as options makes lunch easier to plan.

In winter, earlier closing times, snowy roads and shorter onsen hours may overlap. Buy souvenirs first, then order meals and bathing around their opening hours.
