How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Check first
Sightseeing boat service status

If the boat is your main plan, check today's departures, availability, and cancellations before you arrive. Weather and river conditions can change service, so leave room to switch to dining or shopping.

For a meal
Nigiwaitei rice balls and noodles

The restaurant generally opens at 10:00, with last orders 30 minutes before closing. Outside lunch hours, takeaway items or sweets from the shopping hall may be easier options.

For shopping
Yumekura rice, local sake, and Aga Town gifts

Browse flavors from Aga Town and nearby areas, including seasonal wild vegetables, rice, local sake, kōji (a fermentation starter), and medaka fish tsukudani (small fish simmered in a sweet-savory sauce).

With children
Make Agarīna a separate stop

This free indoor play area is on the roadside station grounds. Check its Tuesday closure and possible timed sessions on busy days when planning around meals.

Beyond the station
Tsugawa, Shōgun Sugi, and Mount Kirin

Even without a boat ride, Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki, the Shōgun Sugi cedar, and Kirinzan Park offer more ways to experience Aga Town.

Shiraishi's rest-stop notes

An easy stop before moving on, whether you ride the boat or not

Shiraishi (白石 結路) sees this as a large rest stop on National Route 49. First check parking, restrooms, opening hours, and boat service; then branch out to a meal, shopping, Agarīna, or Tsugawa. The Agano River view draws you in, but the real convenience is being able to rearrange your visit within the station if plans change.

Highlights

Roadside Station Aga no Sato is a riverside tourism stop on National Route 49 where you can take a restroom break, ride the Agano River Line sightseeing boat, shop at the Yumekura produce and souvenir hall, eat at Nigiwaitei, or use the indoor play area Agarīna. For a quick visit, pick up rice balls and local gifts; with more time, take the roughly 40-minute round-trip boat cruise through the Oku-Aga gorge, then head toward Tsugawa's Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki or Mount Kirin. Boat service depends on the weather and river conditions, so check its status first if the cruise is your main reason for visiting.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Take a boat ride as well as enjoying the river view

Aga no Sato stands out because you can go from the roadside station parking lot to a boat trip on the Agano River. The round-trip cruise departs from and returns to Aga no Sato and takes about 40 minutes. Treat it as a short sightseeing outing in its own right, alongside shopping.

02

Meals and gifts reflect the flavors of Aga Town

At Nigiwaitei, choices include freshly made rice balls, herring soba, dried-sardine ramen, chicken curry, and Aga no Sato pudding. At Yumekura, look for rice, local sake, kōji, seasonal wild vegetables, and regional sweets, making it easy to combine a break with shopping.

03

An indoor option for rainy days and families

The indoor play area Agarīna is on the same grounds, giving families a place to pause when a river view or boat ride is difficult. You can rearrange the boat, meal, shopping, and play area around the weather.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A sightseeing break of about two hours

Spend until lunchtime with the boat as your main outing

Check service before arrival, then arrange your meal and shopping around an available departure. The cruise takes about 40 minutes; add rice balls or noodles at Nigiwaitei and local gifts at Yumekura before or after it for a small sightseeing trip entirely within the station.

Parking → service status and boarding check-in → Agano River Line sightseeing boat → Nigiwaitei → Yumekura

If boats are full or suspended, switch to dining, shopping, or Agarīna rather than planning the whole stop around the cruise. Pets cannot board.

A 30–45-minute driving break

Make a short stop on National Route 49

On the way from Mikawa or Yasuda interchange to National Route 49, make a quick stop for parking, restrooms, and the shopping hall. Even without a cruise, the Agano River view, gifts from rice-growing country, and a light meal make for a useful pause before the next destination.

Parking → restrooms → Yumekura → Nigiwaitei or takeaway → departure

The official facility guide and tourism media give different parking capacities. For large vehicles or on busy days, follow directions on site.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Include playtime for children

On a bad-weather day or when children are tired after a long drive, make Agarīna a planned destination. They can move around in the free indoor play area, while a short meal at Nigiwaitei and shopping at Yumekura give the family manageable separate stops.

Parking → Agarīna → restaurant → shopping hall → departure

Agarīna closes on Tuesdays, and use may be limited to timed sessions when busy. A parent or guardian must accompany children.

An adult weekend drive

Extend the outing to half a day in Aga Town

After enjoying the river and food at the station, head to Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki in Tsugawa to explore local legends and the town on foot. For more nature, choose Shōgun Sugi or Kirinzan Park, where the river, giant cedar, snow camellias, and autumn foliage show different sides of the seasons.

Aga no Sato → Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki → Kirinzan Park; or Aga no Sato → Shōgun Sugi

Tsugawa requires a drive from the station. Allow for winter road conditions and crowds during spring and autumn events and flower seasons.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Baby changing seats are available; plan a short rest and meal rather than a long stay.

The official facility guide lists baby changing seats in both men's and women's restrooms. The cruise lasts about 40 minutes, so plan around feeding and naps.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Agarīna offers an indoor option on rainy or hot days.

A parent or guardian must accompany children in the play area. Check whether timed sessions apply when busy, and alternate play with a meal.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The boat, pudding, and indoor play area offer distinct activities.

The boat ride means sitting for roughly 40 minutes. If your child may get restless, use the restroom and have a light snack before boarding.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Combine an Agano River cruise, Agarīna, and Tsugawa's legends.

Pairing the boatman's guide with Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki brings both nature and local culture into one day's conversation.

Agarīna

Free. Closed Tuesdays (the following day if Tuesday is a public holiday) and over the New Year holidays, December 31–January 2.

Boat fares by age

The round-trip cruise (about 40 minutes) costs ¥2,000 for adults and ¥1,000 for children aged 11 and under. One child aged 5 or under rides free per adult, and infants ride free. Presenting a disability certificate gives half price; groups of 15 or more receive a 10% discount.

Before boarding

There is also a restroom aboard, but visiting one before boarding tends to make the trip easier with children.

Rainy days

Boat service changes with the weather and river conditions. If it is suspended, you can focus on indoor activities.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Today's boat service can shape your itinerary

The official website posts today's status for each departure. Boats may fill up or be suspended, so if the cruise is your goal, check departures first and move your meal or shopping before or after the ride as needed.

The roughly 40-minute cruise fits into a short outing

The round-trip cruise departs from and returns to Aga no Sato and lasts about 40 minutes. The boat operator also lists heating, air conditioning, and a restroom aboard, making it possible to enjoy the river during a drive without setting aside half a day.

A quick meal can showcase the rice-growing area

The official facility guide and tourism guide list freshly made rice balls, herring soba, dried-sardine ramen, and pudding. Choosing a lighter meal around the boat departure or children's needs can be more practical than waiting for a long restaurant meal.

Agarīna gives families an indoor option

The free indoor play area on the roadside station grounds offers a destination when rain, snow, or midsummer heat makes outdoor play difficult. Check its Tuesday closure and possible timed sessions before lunch.

The river and mountains change with Aga Town's seasons

The official website features fresh greenery, summer, autumn foliage, and winter snow-viewing cruises. Spring snow camellias and wild vegetables, autumn color, and snowy winter scenery are draws; also check boat service for weather and river levels, and winter roads and shorter opening hours.

Tsugawa connects the river outing with local legends

Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki and Kirinzan Park require a drive from the station, but follow naturally after a view of the Agano River. Choose the museum on a rainy day, or Kirinzan Park or Shōgun Sugi on a clear spring or autumn day, for a half-day outing beyond the station.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • If you plan to take the sightseeing boat, check the departure-by-departure status on the official homepage before leaving. If boats are full or suspended, move dining and shopping earlier.
  • The complex generally opens 9:00–17:00, closing at 16:30 in winter. The restaurant, shopping hall, boat, and Agarīna each have their own hours.
  • The official facility guide lists parking for 170 cars and two large buses; tourism media give a higher capacity. Follow on-site directions on busy days or when arriving in a large vehicle.
  • Boat service can change because of weather, strong wind, high water, or poor visibility. Winter brings snowy scenery, but also check road conditions and shorter opening hours.
  • Agarīna is free, but closes on Tuesdays and for the New Year holidays. On busy weekends and public holidays, time limits or rotating sessions may apply.
  • For trips into Aga Town's mountains, spring snow camellias, autumn foliage, and winter snow can affect travel time. For a short break, keeping the visit within the station is easier.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A proper lunch

Nigiwaitei rice balls and noodles

The main sit-down option around a boat ride. Choose between rice balls, herring soba (soba noodles topped with herring), dried-sardine ramen, and more.

Last orders are generally 30 minutes before closing.

A light sweet

Aga no Sato pudding

A convenient sweet when you do not want a full meal or just want a break with children.

To enjoy at home

Rice, local sake, Yamazaki Kōjiya fresh yellow kōji, and regional sweets

Yumekura stocks gifts from Gosen City, Agano City, and elsewhere in Niigata Prefecture as well as Aga Town. Leave time to choose something to eat at home.

Seasonal shopping

Wild vegetables, vegetables, and rice

Niigata Prefecture's guide places the wild-vegetable season around late April to late May and lists rice as a year-round specialty.

Fresh and seasonal products depend on deliveries.

On busy days

Keep more than one meal option in mind

When boat departures, lunch, and Agarīna's busy periods overlap, use the restrooms and shop first, then shift your meal time slightly.
