Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Asahi is the gateway to the large Asahi Midori no Sato complex. Browse Iwafune Koshihikari rice, wild-grape products, and Murakami salmon products in the local-products hall, then eat salted, air-dried salmon or Asahi pork at the restaurant. With more time, warm up at Mahoroba Onsen; families can head to the heated pool at Asahi Kireikan or the covered multipurpose plaza. The roadside-station facilities have been under renovation since May 2026. Check parking, nighttime toilets, large-vehicle access, and the information corner before visiting.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Plan your visit around the current renovation

From May 11, 2026 until around September 2027, the main roadside rest facilities and some parking spaces are unavailable. Large vehicles cannot park, and notices also restrict use of the multipurpose toilet at night. The local-products hall, restaurant, Mahoroba Onsen, Asahi Kireikan, farm stand, and covered plaza continue to operate. Come with a meal, shopping, or bathing in mind as well as a break from Route 7.

02

Taste Murakami through Iwafune rice, shio-biki salmon, and Asahi pork

The restaurant uses Iwafune Koshihikari rice and serves shio-biki salmon set meals, Asahi pork loin tare-katsu rice bowls, and Midori no Sato set meals. Shio-biki is salmon salted and air-dried in Murakami's tradition; tare-katsu is a cutlet dipped in sauce. In the local-products hall, browse Iwafune rice, wild-grape wine and jam, salmon products, local sake, and Murakami carved lacquerware. The farm stand carries wild vegetables, mushrooms, and seasonal produce. It is especially useful for combining lunch and shopping.

03

A rest stop with a hot spring, pool, and covered plaza

Mahoroba Onsen offers day-use bathing and a free rest area after a long drive. Asahi Kireikan has a 25 m heated pool, waterslide, Bade zone (spa pool area), sauna, and training room. The covered multipurpose plaza offers room to move regardless of the weather. Rain, heat, or a winter drive need not limit your break to one activity.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A midday drive from Niigata City toward Yamagata

Turn a Route 7 lunch stop into a taste of Murakami

A toilet stop can be brief, but here you can combine Iwafune Koshihikari rice, shio-biki salmon, Asahi pork, wild vegetables, and seasonal produce. Eat at the restaurant, browse salmon products, local sake, and wild-grape products in the local-products hall, then pick up vegetables at the farm stand. Eating and shopping in one stop makes it easy to sample northern Niigata.

From Asahi-Mahoroba IC, take Route 7 for about two minutes. Make a short circuit of lunch, shopping, and toilets.

Parking and toilet routes differ during construction. Large vehicles should plan another rest stop.

Long journeys, days spent driving into the evening, or travel toward Yamagata

Break up a long drive at the hot spring

Mahoroba Onsen offers day-use bathing, a free rest area, and massage chairs. Its soft-feeling water, outdoor bath, and tatami rest area offer a chance to unwind during a drive.

After dining or shopping, go to the Mahoroba Onsen reception desk, which also handles check-in for the Honwakan lodging facility.

Construction notices say the route to the onsen may be hard to follow. Its hours also changed in July 2026.

Rainy days, midsummer or winter drives, and families with primary-school children who want to move around

Indoor options help families with children

Asahi Kireikan has a heated pool, waterslide, Bade zone (spa pool area), and spa zone. The covered multipurpose plaza is used for sports and events. Both offer ways for children to move around when it is difficult to spend long outdoors.

Eat and shop at the roadside station, then move to Asahi Kireikan or the multipurpose plaza.

The pool slide requires a height of at least 120 cm and is listed as closed in winter. Check conditions for the day of your visit.

Adults, families interested in food culture, and rainy-day detours

Spend half a day exploring Murakami's salmon culture

After tasting shio-biki salmon and Iwafune rice at the station, continue to Iyoboya Museum for Murakami's salmon culture. Exhibits include a view of a branch of the Miomote River, and the salmon history adds context to your meal before a walk along the machiya streets.

Michi-no-Eki Asahi → Iyoboya Museum → Murakami machiya street. A half-day detour by car.

Iyoboya Museum generally closes at 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. If you arrive late in the day, visit the museum first.

Sunny days, seaside sunsets, or a longer hot-spring outing

Continue to the coast and finish at Senami Onsen

Asahi Midori no Sato sits among the hills, while a drive toward Senami Onsen and the shore adds another side of Murakami. Mountain produce, salmon culture, and a coastal sunset can all fit into one day. The station makes a useful turning point for a northern Niigata drive.

Michi-no-Eki Asahi → central Murakami → Senami Onsen and the coast. Check sunset time for an evening visit.

Adding the coast increases the driving distance. In winter or rough weather, watch road conditions and wind.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

Shopping and a short break are manageable, but check parking routes and nighttime multipurpose-toilet restrictions during construction. The restaurant's multipurpose toilet is an option during its opening hours.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

This is not primarily an outdoor-play stop, but Asahi Kireikan or the covered plaza can offer room to move when available. Check pool-use rules in advance.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The heated pool, covered plaza, restaurant, and farm stand combine well for this age. Indoor options make rainy-day plans easier to adjust.

Primary-school children
★★★★★

The Asahi Kireikan pool, covered multipurpose plaza, and half-day trip to Iyoboya Museum make this an especially flexible stop for this age group.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Check where to park during construction

Some spaces are unavailable, and large vehicles cannot park. In a standard vehicle, choose a space near the onsen, restaurant, or farm stand to reduce walking.

  2. 2
Choose toilets according to the time of day

Temporary toilets are available, but the multipurpose toilet has nighttime restrictions. By day, toilets in the restaurant and other facilities may also be options; locate them first.

  3. 3
If the restaurant is busy, shop first

There can be a lunchtime wait. The local-products hall, farm stand, cafe, and onsen rest area give you ways to change the order of your visit.

  4. 4
Allow time if finishing at the onsen

Since July 2026, Mahoroba Onsen has been listed as open until 20:00, with last admission at 19:30. If arriving in the evening, plan the order of dining and bathing.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Construction affects how to use the site

Official notices restrict the road rest facilities, information corner, some parking, large-vehicle parking, and the multipurpose toilet at night. The local-products hall, restaurant, onsen, farm stand, and Asahi Kireikan remain open, so choose your destination within the complex before arriving.

Bathing turns a short stop into a longer break

Mahoroba Onsen lists a free rest area, massage chairs, and an outdoor bath. Check the construction route and revised hours if the onsen is your main destination.

Continue into Murakami to understand its salmon culture

After shio-biki salmon and Iwafune rice at the station, Iyoboya Museum and the machiya streets connect the meal with Murakami's salmon culture, traditional townhouses, and seaside hot springs. The station works well as a starting point for a half-day trip.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • From May 11, 2026 until around September 2027, the main roadside-station facilities are under renovation. Restrictions affect the information corner, road rest facilities, some parking, large-vehicle parking, and the multipurpose toilet at night.
  • Official guidance says the local-products hall, general information desk, restaurant, Mahoroba Onsen, Asahi Kireikan, farm stand, and covered multipurpose plaza remain open.
  • The rapid EV charger is broken; an official notice said in September 2026 that no repair date had been set.
  • It is about a two-minute drive from Asahi-Mahoroba IC via Route 7. The official news also carries road information when nighttime closures affect the Nihonkai-Tōhoku Expressway.
  • When the restaurant is full, put your name on its waiting list. It does not accept seat reservations during Golden Week, Obon, and September's Silver Week holidays.
  • Mahoroba Onsen's outdoor bath may be unavailable in winter or when water temperature is unsuitable. Check notices inside or ask at reception.
  • Mahoroba Onsen and Asahi Kireikan are scheduled to close temporarily November 9–18, 2026 for maintenance of the hot-spring source well.
  • The farm stand is listed as open 8:00–16:30 from April through October and 8:00–15:30 from November through March. Go early for a better choice of wild plants, mushrooms, and vegetables.
  • An official notice says lights in the multipurpose dome are not working. Check reservations and the warning if visiting at night or for an event.

Sit down for a full meal

Shio-biki salmon set meal / Asahi pork loin tare-katsu rice bowl / Midori no Sato set meal

A good choice for a Murakami-style lunch in one stop: Iwafune rice paired with salmon, pork, or wild vegetables.

Expect possible waits at lunchtime and on holidays. Official guidance asks guests to write their name on the waiting list when the restaurant is full.

Have something light

Cafe corner / Murakami green-tea soft serve / seasonal light meals

If you do not want a full restaurant meal, pair shopping with a sweet taste of Murakami.

The cafe generally opens 9:00–16:00. Hours can change; late in the day, check the restaurant and local-products hall notices.

Shop to take food home

Iwafune Koshihikari rice / wild-grape wine / wild-grape jam / salmon products / local sake

There is plenty to choose for a meal at home. Rice, salmon, sake, and wild-grape products offer a clear taste of Murakami and the Asahi area.

Farm produce and seasonal goods vary by time of day. Go early if you hope to find wild vegetables or mushrooms.
