How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Start here
Farm produce and local specialty shops

Seasonal vegetables, shiitake, Odai tea, mochi sweets, Miyagawa ayu sweetfish and woodcraft are all on offer. A lap around the shops before eating makes it easier to decide what to buy.

For a meal
Station bento or Oishika Burger

Choose Magokoro Shokudo for a seated meal or the food stand for a quick bite. Go early for weekday-only or limited-quantity items.

For sweets
Odai tea sweets and mochi

Naisho mochi, Pocchari mochi, Futokoro mochi and tea sweets suit a break in the car or a gift to take home; mochi is a Japanese rice cake.

For more information
Okuise Terrace

At the tourism information center next door, pick up brochures and find woodcraft, dam-card distribution information and seasonal events before setting off. A dam card is a collectible information card about a dam.

To get outdoors
Misedani Dam or Miyagawa River SUP

Walk to Misedani Dam for a short outing, or extend a half-day trip to stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on Okuise Lake or to Forestpia.

Minato's notes on food stops

Browse the shops before you eat. Okuise is enjoyable for the flavors you take home, too.

Minato Chitose sees this station as more than a lunch stop. Odai tea sweets, traditional mochi, seasonal vegetables, Miyagawa ayu and the stand's burger let even a short break leave you with a local flavor. If the restaurant is busy, try the stand; if afternoon produce is sparse, choose mochi or tea sweets. Being able to choose again is part of the appeal.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Okuise Odai is a gateway to Okuise food, just off National Route 42 from the Omiya-Odai interchange on the Kisei Expressway. In the morning, browse seasonal vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, Odai tea and mochi sweets at the farm and specialty shops. At lunch, try the daily station bento and handmade side dishes at Magokoro Shokudo, or make a shorter stop for an Oishika Burger or Ouchiyama soft serve from Magokoro Yatai. Misedani Station is within walking distance. Add the neighboring Okuise Terrace, Misedani Dam about 5 minutes away on foot, or a short drive to SUP on the Miyagawa River or Okuise Forestpia for a half-day outing beyond shopping.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

An Okuise farm shop worth visiting early

The station stocks seasonal vegetables and shiitake from Odai and neighboring areas, Odai tea, Miyagawa ayu sweetfish and woodcraft. The tourism association says fresh vegetables can sell out in the morning, so shoppers may prefer to browse before lunch.

02

A restaurant and food stand for lunch or a small bite

Magokoro Shokudo serves today's station bento with handmade side dishes, noodles and set meals. Magokoro Yatai specializes in a local burger on an Odai tea bun, Ouchiyama soft serve and fried snacks. The restaurant, stand and ready-made dishes in the shop give you three choices if lunch is busy.

03

Easy links to places beyond the station

Misedani Station is a 10-minute walk away, the Omiya-Odai interchange is a few minutes' drive away, and Okuise Terrace is next door. Misedani Dam is about 5 minutes away on foot, a SUP reception point is within about 5 minutes by car, and Okuise Forestpia is around 20 minutes by car. It is easy to head into nature after eating and shopping.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 30–45-minute break on National Route 42

Make a short morning shopping stop

After parking, use the restroom first, then visit the farm produce and specialty shops. Browse vegetables, shiitake, mochi and Odai tea sweets; consider your journey home when choosing anything needing refrigeration. Even without a restaurant meal, soft serve from the stand or a snack from the shop can bring a taste of Okuise to your stop.

Parking → restrooms → farm produce → specialty shop → food stand or departure

Farm produce and limited-quantity items are best sought in the morning. Choices may be fewer in the afternoon, so allow for tea sweets or mochi instead.

A lunch break for adults

Eat lunch at the restaurant and take sweets home

Choose today's station bento, noodles or a set meal at Magokoro Shokudo. Afterward, buy Naisho mochi, Pocchari mochi and tea sweets at the specialty shop. Handmade local side dishes followed by tea sweets make this a good way to sample several specialties in one visit.

Restaurant → specialty shop → Okuise Terrace → departure

The restaurant is listed as closed Fridays, with last orders at 15:00. For a late lunch, consider the food stand or prepared dishes instead.

A 15–30-minute post-meal walk

Walk from the station to Misedani Dam

After shopping, check dam cards and tourist information at Okuise Terrace next door, then take a short walk around Misedani Dam. The waterside view turns a roadside break into an Okuise outing.

Station → Okuise Terrace → Misedani Dam area → back to station

In summer, watch the sun and stay safe near the water; after rain, mind your footing. Walk during daylight.

A summer drive with family or friends

Extend a half-day outing to the Miyagawa waterside

Have lunch or a snack at the station. If you can book, head to Verde Odai Tourism for SUP; for a slower day, try the hot spring and barbecue at Okuise Forestpia. The station works as a meeting point for supplies, restrooms and tourist information.

Station → Miyagawa SUP or Okuise Forestpia → buy sweets on the return journey

Water activities and barbecues depend on the season, reservations and weather. You can keep the day's meal at the station and check the operators' latest activity information before going.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or under
★★★☆☆

Suitable for a restroom stop and short shopping visit.

An accessible restroom is listed with a diaper-changing table. A short stop for feeding, changing and shopping is more practical than a long stay at the station.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A soft serve from the stand and a short walk can help keep children engaged.

The shops have many items, so keep children close. After eating, take a brief walk toward Misedani Dam or drive to a waterside park or activity venue for a change of scene.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Mochi, soft serve and a dam walk give children small goals.

Eat and shop at the station, then in summer extend the day to a Miyagawa waterside activity or Forestpia. Always keep an adult close to children near the water.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Works well with SUP or nature-school programs.

Check age and shared-board rules for Okuise Lake SUP before booking. The station can serve as a place to eat, shop and use the restroom before meeting your group.

Lunch rush

The restaurant tends to draw a wait even on weekdays. Have the food stand, prepared dishes or sweets as alternatives.

A waterside day

Bring a change of clothes, towel, shoes that can get wet and sun protection. Check weather and reservations for SUP or river play.

Shopping

A cooler bag helps if you buy fresh produce, mochi or dairy products.

A rainy day

Indoor shopping and meals are still options. Skip waterside walks and activities if conditions are poor; use Okuise Terrace to gather information instead.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose a parking spot

Around 50 car spaces are available. Around lunchtime it may be busy, so use the restroom and browse the shops first rather than rushing your meal.

  2. 2
Choose the restaurant or food stand

Choose the restaurant for a seated meal or the stand for a quick bite. Later in the day, check last orders and closing days.

  3. 3
Get more information at Okuise Terrace

Useful for nearby sights, dam cards and seasonal events. It is a short walk and helps you choose your next stop.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Okuise Waiwai Market and Waiwai events

Official and prefectural listings describe events centered on seasonal foods and specialties such as detarame-yaki, a local grilled dish. Frequency and details vary, so check official notices and the tourism association's events shortly before your visit.

Okuise Forestpia summer and autumn programs

For 2026, the tourism association lists barbecue lunches with hot spring access, seasonal summer lunches, fishing and fish-catching experiences. They fit a half-day plan after eating or shopping at the station and then driving over.

Osugidani Nature School river and forest programs

Programs include summer-holiday river play, day camps and nature experiences for elementary school children in the Miyagawa area. Allow travel time from the station before the meeting time.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The farm shop is most rewarding in the morning

The tourism association says fresh vegetables sometimes sell out by morning's end. Reviews also often mention the range of local vegetables and shopping visits, so browse the shop soon after arriving if buying produce is a priority.

Remember tea, mochi and the venison burger

The station's specialty listings include Odai tea sweets and mochi such as Naisho and Pocchari; the food stand offers an Oishika Burger with an Odai tea bun and venison patty. These 3 categories make a useful starting point on a first visit.

Shopping and meals remain options in rain

The restaurant, specialty shop and Okuise Terrace offer mostly indoor options. Reviews mention sheltering from rain during a break; if the weather turns, skip the waterside walk and focus on shopping and sweets.

With children, plan an outing beyond the station

Family information lists 24-hour restrooms, a diaper-changing table and resting space at Okuise Terrace. For a longer activity, divide the day between the station and a Misedani Dam walk, SUP or Forestpia.

Okuise Terrace helps shape the rest of the trip

Run by the tourism association, Okuise Terrace is next to the station. It has brochures, local products, event information and details on Misedani Dam cards. Stop there after eating to discover Odai options for your next destination.

The seasons change the options for produce and river outings

From spring through autumn, options include Miyagawa SUP and Forestpia barbecues; summer brings river play, while autumn brings mushroom and new-rice shopping. The station is generally closed January 1–2, and shortened hours may be announced in late December, so check shortly before a year-end or New Year drive.
