Highlights

Mokkuru Shinshiro stands at the junction of the Shin-Tomei Expressway's Shinshiro Interchange and National Route 151, at the gateway to Oku-Mikawa. Beneath its arched wooden roof, start the morning with a tamago kake gohan breakfast—rice topped with egg—then try wild boar ramen or gohei-mochi, a grilled rice cake, at lunchtime. Shop for local vegetables and Oku-Mikawa souvenirs. A dog run for small dogs, toilets usable around the clock and tourist information make it a practical rest stop for drivers, families and people travelling with dogs. If you have time, add the Shitaragahara and Nagashino historic sites, Sakurabuchi Park or Yuya Onsen for a half-day of Shinshiro history and nature.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A clear reason to stop in the morning

Being just off Shinshiro Interchange, it may look like a quick toilet stop, but mornings are a particular draw. If you can arrive in the 8 o'clock hour, start with the tamago kake gohan breakfast, rice with an onsen egg (a gently cooked egg), and leave more time for an Oku-Mikawa drive afterward. If you come at lunchtime, choose wild boar ramen, gohei-mochi grilled rice cakes, chicken-toro snacks or vegetables from the produce market. The options change with the time of day.

02

A wooden station building and Oku-Mikawa shopping open the trip

True to the name “Mokkuru,” the timber arched roof leaves an impression. Local vegetables, eggs, gohei-mochi, game meat and Oku-Mikawa souvenirs bring a sense of the region to the shopping. The tourist information center is here too, making it easy to plan a visit to Mount Horaiji, Yuya Onsen or Nagashino before setting off.

03

An easy place to plan a rest

There is a free dog run for small dogs, terraced-field-style benches, toilets with around 24 fixtures, a multipurpose toilet, a diaper-changing table and a nursing corner. With young children or a dog, it helps to find the toilets and a place to rest before eating. At busy times, leave room to switch from a sit-down meal to produce shopping or a snack.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A morning drive into Oku-Mikawa from Nagoya or Toyohashi

Start your trip with rice and egg after leaving Shinshiro Interchange

If you arrive in the 8 o'clock hour, build the start of your trip around Mokkuru breakfast. Have an onsen egg, rice, miso soup and toppings before heading toward Mount Horaiji or Yuya Onsen. Breakfast just off the expressway is especially useful with children or after a long drive.

Shin-Tomei Expressway's Shinshiro Interchange → Mokkuru Shinshiro → Mount Horaiji or Yuya Onsen

For breakfast, allow a margin before the 10:30 end time.

A Route 151 lunch break focused on roadside-station food

Make an Oku-Mikawa lunch stop with game meat and gohei-mochi

Wild boar ramen, gohei-mochi, chicken-toro snacks and local vegetables make even a short stop feel rooted in Shinshiro. Holiday lunchtimes can be busy, so decide on site whether to sit down for a meal or choose snacks and the shop.

Park → toilets → food court or snacks → shop

Popular foods and produce may run low later in the day.

Travellers with small dogs seeking a break on a long journey

With a dog, make a short stop a proper break

A dog run for small dogs occupies part of the terraced-field bench area, giving a dog time to walk after a car ride. People can use the toilets and shop while the dog gets a change of scene. It is not a large play area, but it works for a travel break.

Park → dog run → shop or bench break

For dogs of about 10 kg or less; hours are 10:00–16:00.

Half a day outdoors with preschool or primary school children

With children, get organized here before heading to a park

Mokkuru Shinshiro is strong on food and rest stops. For playground time, pair it with Shinshiro Comprehensive Park or Sakurabuchi Park. Eat and use the toilets here, then drive to a park. With young children, plan toilet and water breaks around the drive, and seek shade on hot days.

Mokkuru Shinshiro → Shinshiro Comprehensive Park / Sakurabuchi Park

Park parking can get busier with seasonal events or changing weather.

Adult trips, learning with primary school children and rainy-day detours

History lovers can link Shitaragahara and Nagashino

Combine the Shitaragahara Historical Museum near Shinshiro Interchange with the Nagashino Castle Ruins Historic Preservation Museum farther north for a half-day of roadside-station food and Sengoku-period history. Their indoor exhibitions also make this workable on hot or rainy days. Eating at the station first leaves more energy for the displays.

Mokkuru Shinshiro → Shitaragahara Historical Museum → Nagashino Castle Ruins Historic Preservation Museum

The museums are generally closed on Tuesdays; plan to enter by 16:30.

An adult drive, a hot spring stay or a day lasting until evening

Add Yuya Onsen for an Oku-Mikawa trip

A meal and shopping can complete the stop, but continuing to Yuya Onsen turns it into more of an Oku-Mikawa outing. The hot spring town, the Itajiki River and Yuya Garden offer a chance to park and walk a little. Autumn leaves and summer riversides give the detour different seasonal character.

Mokkuru Shinshiro → Yuya Onsen and Yuya Garden

Hours and closing days vary by hot spring facility. Watch for seasonal or holiday parking charges.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

A nursing corner and diaper-changing table make it a reassuring rest stop.

Best for meals, toilets and getting organized before travel, rather than play.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

There is time for a short break between food and shopping, but Shinshiro Comprehensive Park or Sakurabuchi Park is better for active play.

At busy times, find the toilets and consider seating first.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Familiar foods such as gohei-mochi and rice with egg pair well with a park visit.

After eating, head out to play rather than expecting a long play session at the station.

Primary school children
★★★★☆

Shitaragahara and Nagashino history, Forest Adventure and Sakurabuchi Park make a half-day plan easy to put together.

Check age requirements, closing days and reservations for museums and activities.

Toilets

A useful first stop before or after a long drive.

Nursing

Find its location on arrival, especially when busy.

Outdoor play

Consider Shinshiro Comprehensive Park or Sakurabuchi Park.

With a dog

Check its hours and approximate weight limit.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Easy to park soon after leaving the expressway

Very close to Shinshiro Interchange, the station works as either the first or last break on a long drive. On holidays, watch for parking congestion; parking farther from the building may be easier than trying to get close.

  2. 2
Plan toilet and meal breaks separately

Toilets are convenient, while meals can be busy depending on the hour. Use the toilets first, then find a seat or order, and shop afterward for a calmer stop.

  3. 3
Expect brochures to be the main weekday tourist information

Staff may be absent from the Oku-Mikawa Tourist Information Center on weekdays. Consultation is easier on weekends and public holidays; on weekdays, pick up brochures to choose your next destination.

  4. 4
Check closing days before adding a hot spring or museum

Hours vary among Yuya Onsen facilities, and the museums are generally closed on Tuesdays. The roadside station is easy to visit on its own, but check the next destination's hours when planning a half-day outing.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Spaces used for events

Official news and Mokkuru newsletter

The official site announces fairs, events and the Mokkuru newsletter. Ingredient-themed fairs, such as peach or clam fairs, can become a reason to visit.

Official Instagram

A way to follow events, fairs, new products and what is on sale that day. Treat prices and offerings in posts as information from the time of posting.

Space beside the dog run

Sometimes used for anniversary events and stalls, changing the feel of a holiday visit.

Oku-Mikawa Tourist Information Center

A starting point for Mount Horaiji, Yuya Onsen and nearby events. In-person advice is more likely on weekends, public holidays and during Obon; on weekdays, brochures may be the main resource.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Allow time for parking and food at holiday lunchtime

Television coverage and reviews suggest that parking tends to fill on weekends. Its convenient position near Shinshiro Interchange also attracts visitors, so keep snacks and produce shopping as options if you are set on lunch here.

Rice and egg at breakfast can set your departure time

The 8:00–10:30 morning meal offers a clear goal before driving into Oku-Mikawa. Some notices say it may end early, so arrive early if breakfast is the purpose of your stop.

For signature foods, think about sharing as well as size

Oversized gohei-mochi and chicken-toro are among the foods people remember. Families or groups may find it easier to share snacks and browse the produce market than to have everyone queue for the same meal.

For dogs, even a little walking matters

The free run for small dogs offers a change from car travel. At 90 square meters of artificial turf, it works better as a place for a short break than for a long play session.

Choose nearby stops by history, parks or hot springs

Shitaragahara and Nagashino suit a history visit; Sakurabuchi and Shinshiro Comprehensive parks offer outdoor play; Yuya Onsen makes an adult-focused finale. Adding one stop after eating at the roadside station can make a more relaxed Shinshiro outing than trying to fit them all in.
