Natsuki's Minamiizu notes

A station for planning your family's next move, not a play stop.

Natsuki Yoshimi sees this station as a place to pause and reset a Minamiizu itinerary: toilets for the children, a sweet at the cafe, market shopping, then the hot spring if it rains or the river or sea if it is fine. Put those stops in the order that works for the family, and Shimogamo Onsen Yunohana becomes a useful junction.

Highlights

Roadside Station Shimogamo Onsen Yunohana is a stop on National Route 136 linking Yumigahama, Cape Irozaki and Shimogamo Onsen in southern Izu. Its main draws are a farmers' market supplied by more than 500 producers, sweets made with melons grown using hot spring heat, and early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers along the Aono River. The town says the station's footbath has closed. For a soak, head instead to a day-use bath within walking distance; use the station for shopping, toilets, visitor information and a quick sweet. Natsuki Yoshimi suggests a family sequence of market, toilets and riverside walk, followed by a bath or the sea, instead of trying to keep children occupied at the station for a long stay. For navigation, the Japanese address is 静岡県賀茂郡南伊豆町下賀茂157-1.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Buy produce from Minamiizu's fields and sea along your route

The Minamiizu Yunohana farmers' market centers on vegetables, fruit, seafood and handmade bread delivered daily by local producers. Treat it as a place to choose seasonal food alongside local shoppers, rather than just a shop for bulk souvenirs.

02

Get a taste of Shimogamo Onsen with melon soft serve

At the cafe counter, look for soft serve made with melons grown using hot spring heat. It offers families a quick sweet break even when there is no time for a full meal.

03

Walk to the Aono River from behind the station in spring

Early-blooming Kawazu cherry trees and rapeseed flowers bring spring color to the Aono River. Cherry blossom season gets busy, but families can use the station for toilets and shopping before setting out on foot.

04

Go to Gin-no-Yu Kaikan for a bath, rather than the station

Despite the onsen in the station's name, the town says its footbath service has ended. For a hot spring finish, plan a separate stop at Gin-no-Yu Kaikan, a day-use bath within walking distance.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A shopping break before Yumigahama or Cape Irozaki

Pick up Minamiizu's seasonal foods before heading to the sea

On entering Minamiizu via National Route 136, make a quick round of the toilets, tourist information and farmers' market. Browse vegetables, citrus, dried fish and bread, and separate what you will eat in the car from what you will open at your lodging.

Roadside station → farmers' market and cafe → Yumigahama or Cape Irozaki.

Fresh foods and light bites vary with deliveries and sellouts, so expect fewer choices late in the afternoon.

A blossom-viewing drive from February to early March

Make the Aono River the main event in spring

During the Minami Cherry Blossom and Rapeseed Flower Festival, the station becomes a gateway to flower viewing. With children, use the toilet and get drinks first, walk by the river before it gets crowded, then return for a sweet.

Station toilets → Aono River walk → farmers' market and sweets → hot spring or journey home.

Parking, nearby roads, visitor contributions and illuminations during blossom season can change each year.

Families with children, three generations, or a day without beach time

On rainy days, focus on shopping and the hot spring

When outdoor walks are difficult, take a short break at the station's market and cafe before moving on to Gin-no-Yu Kaikan. If children get restless, moving sooner to a place with bathing or a meal may be easier than a long stay at the station.

Roadside station → farmers' market and cafe → Gin-no-Yu Kaikan.

Gin-no-Yu Kaikan normally closes on Wednesdays; check its official guidance for holidays and busy periods.

A day for a station stamp, toilets and a little shopping

For a short stop, set aside expectations of an on-site bath

The station's name can give the wrong impression that a footbath or bath is available here. Use the farmers' market, tourist information, cafe and toilets, and visit another facility for a hot spring bath.

Park → toilets → farmers' market → cafe or departure.

The town says the footbath service has ended; older travel information may be out of date.

A Minamiizu drive with a destination suited to the season

Choose the sea in summer, flowers and hot springs from winter into spring

In summer, use the station to stock up before or after Yumigahama or Cape Irozaki. From winter into spring, link it with cherry blossoms, rapeseed flowers and Shimogamo Onsen. Let the season guide the destination beyond the station.

Summer: station → Yumigahama. Winter–spring: station → Aono River → Gin-no-Yu Kaikan.

Beach swimming, the blossom festival and nearby hot springs run on seasonal schedules; check the organizers' latest information just before visiting.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for toilets, quick shopping and a break between car rides.

This is not a place for extended play. A brief visit to the market and toilets while carrying your child is easier. During cherry blossom season, the crowds may make carrying a child easier than using a stroller in some places.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Pair a sweet with a short riverside walk for a change of pace.

Try onsen melon soft serve or bread, then walk a little way along the Aono River if the weather is fine. On a rainy day, switch sooner to an indoor option such as Gin-no-Yu Kaikan.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Spring blossoms, rapeseed flowers and a supply stop before the sea are easy to enjoy.

Add the Aono River, rapeseed fields or Yumigahama to the station stop to keep the trip engaging. Taking care of food and toilets first helps the next leg go smoothly.

Primary school children
★★★★☆

Talk about market produce, onsen melons and the landscape on the way to Cape Irozaki.

Vegetables, seaweed, melons grown with hot spring heat and the journey to the southernmost tip of the Izu Peninsula make this more than a rest stop.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Beware of old information if you want the footbath

The town says the station footbath service has ended. For a bath, plan a separate visit to Gin-no-Yu Kaikan rather than expecting one at the station.

In spring, the station area itself becomes a busy destination

During Kawazu cherry blossom and rapeseed flower season along the Aono River, the station area becomes a flower-viewing base. Parking and pedestrian flow differ from an ordinary shopping stop; use the toilet and get drinks first.

Onsen melon soft serve is a strong reason for a short stop

Cafe information and visitor accounts point to soft serve made with onsen melons as an easy choice, including for families without time for a full meal.

Use it as a junction for Minamiizu destinations

The town describes the station as an intermediate stop for destinations including Yumigahama, Cape Irozaki and Cape Hagachizaki. From here, choose the sea, a hot spring or blossoms rather than treating the station as the end of the trip.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The farmers' market is generally open 9:00–16:00. Deliveries and sellouts affect the selection of fresh food and light bites.
  • Tourist information is generally open 9:00–17:00. Use it to plan flower viewing, swimming and the route toward Cape Irozaki.
  • The town says the footbath service has ended. If you want a hot spring, plan Gin-no-Yu Kaikan as a separate stop.
  • During cherry blossom season, parking, nearby roads, visitor contributions and illuminations can change. Check the latest Minamiizu Tourism Association guidance.
  • If you are continuing to the sea or a hot spring, consider a cooler so fresh food bought at the market does not sit in the car for hours.
  • Travel in southern Izu can take longer than the distance suggests. Leave room in the schedule rather than squeezing in Yumigahama, Cape Irozaki and the Shimoda area all at once.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Sweets

Onsen melon soft serve

A first choice for a short break with children; the melons are grown using heat from Shimogamo's hot springs.

Farmers' market

Seasonal vegetables / citrus / pickled plums / flowers

These shelves feel close to everyday local shopping. Choose separately what you will eat at your lodging and what you will open after returning home.

Seafood

Dried fish / seaweed / funori seaweed

Take a taste of the region home even on a day spent along Minamiizu's coast. Funori is an edible red seaweed.

Light bites

Bread / onigiri rice balls / cafe drinks

Settle hunger before heading to the beach or flower viewing. The morning is a better bet before items sell out.

When it's crowded

Market takeaways / cafe soft serve

Buy something and continue to your next stop rather than waiting to have a full meal at the station.
