Natsuki's detour notes

At Izu no Heso, choosing a treat helps shape the day.

Natsuki Tsukioka sees this station as a place to set the pace of an Izu trip through strawberries: a quick soft-serve break, lunch at the café, or a baumkuchen to take home. Add market vegetables and Izu gifts; if children get restless, head to Kawa no Eki, and if the sky is clear, go for the viewpoint. Once you choose what to eat, the route through central Izu starts to fall into place.

Take a strawberry break, shop for produce, and head to the river or viewpoint if the weather is good. Food makes it easy to plan a trip from Izu no Heso.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Izu no Heso sits just off the Ōhito-Chūō interchange on the Izu Chūō Road. It brings together Ichigo BonBonBERRY, the Izu Mura no Eki produce market, lodging, and tourist information. Its highlights are soft serve, parfaits, baumkuchen, and strawberry gifts made with Benihoppe strawberries, a local variety. Even on a short stop you can enjoy sweets and shop for produce; with more time, continue to the neighboring Kawa no Eki riverside park, Izu Panorama Park, Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace, or Kosaka Mikan Cooperative Orchard.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Start with the strawberry shops

Ichigo BonBonBERRY has separate retail, café, and stand areas, so you can choose according to your appetite. For a light stop, try soft serve or a shake; for a seated meal, choose a parfait or lunch; and for the journey home, look for baumkuchen or jam. Even a short visit can capture what makes this station distinctive.

02

A substantial produce and gift selection for the trip home

The Izu no Heso branch of Izu Mura no Eki brings local vegetables, fruit, Izu specialties, and processed foods together in one market. It works both before a trip toward the coast or hot spring areas and on the return journey, when you can pick up chilled foods and longer-lasting gifts.

03

Close to the interchange for a break and a reset

The station is just off the Ōhito-Chūō interchange on the Izu Chūō Road and within walking distance of Takyō Station. Parking, toilets, tourist information, sweets, and shopping are all in one place. It is also a convenient meeting point before heading toward Shuzenji, Izu Nagaoka, or Numazu.

04

Pair it with the riverside park for outdoor time after eating

In the adjoining area, Kawa no Eki Izu Shiroyama has broad riverside grounds overlooking the Kano River and Mount Shiroyama, with a play area, event space, dog run, and café. After sweets and shopping at the roadside station, families and visitors with dogs can head there to stretch after the drive.

05

Strawberries in winter and spring; mandarins in autumn and winter

Strawberry sweets are available year-round, while winter through spring is a likely time for events and limited menus. From autumn into the start of the new year, Kosaka Mikan Cooperative Orchard is generally in season, giving you a choice between sweets at the station and a longer fruit-picking outing. Mikan are Japanese mandarins.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A stop while traveling on the Izu Chūō Road

Take a 30-minute strawberry break

After parking, use the toilets first, then choose soft serve or a drink at the Ichigo BonBonBERRY stand. If someone wants a gift, add a baumkuchen or jam from the shop; even a short visit will feel distinctive to this station.

Parking → toilets → stand → shop → departure

The café's last admission and the stand's weekend and holiday hours can change. Check official information if arriving late in the day.

Before or after heading toward Shuzenji or Izu Nagaoka

Combine the café and produce market around lunchtime

If you want to sit down to eat, make Ichigo BonBon Café the center of your stop. After a parfait or seasonal lunch, browse vegetables and gifts at Izu Mura no Eki. You can eat and shop in one place.

Café → Izu Mura no Eki → tourist information desk

At weekend lunchtime, leave room to switch from the café to the stand, shop, or produce market if the café is busy.

A driving break with toddlers through primary-school children

Follow sweets with outdoor play for children

After strawberry soft serve and a little shopping at the station, head to Kawa no Eki Izu Shiroyama. Its riverside grounds, play area, dog run, and event space let you separate eating time from time to move around.

Roadside station → Kawa no Eki Izu Shiroyama → return journey

Watch the sun in summer and the ground after rain; with dogs, check which indoor areas do not allow them.

A day when you want a classic Izu view

Extend a clear-day visit to the viewpoint

Make a quick stop for sweets and shopping, then drive to Izu Panorama Park. At Ao Terrace, the main draw is the view of Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay. You can also see the viewpoint while the weather is clear and return to the station for gifts afterward.

Roadside station → Izu Panorama Park → return to the station for more shopping

The ropeway's final uphill departure, wind conditions, and visibility vary by day. Check operating information shortly before a view-focused visit.

Adults, three-generation groups, and autumn or winter detours

Choose history or fruit by season

Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is easier to plan year-round; Kosaka Mikan Cooperative Orchard suits autumn through the start of the new year. Use the station as a base for toilets and shopping, and choose either a history visit or fruit picking to avoid packing in too much.

Roadside station → Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace or Kosaka Mikan Cooperative Orchard

Check the orchard's opening season and the furnace's closed days and visiting hours in their official notices.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Check the location of nursing and diaper-changing facilities in advance and keep the stop short.

With sweets and shopping the main attractions, a short stop for parking, toilets, and a little shopping may work better than a long stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A soft-serve break and a short spell of outdoor play at Kawa no Eki work well.

Keep the stand or shop as alternatives to a long café wait. Plan to hold hands near roads and in the parking area.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Strawberry sweets and Kawa no Eki can make a satisfying visit.

Sweets alone may leave children with energy to spare. Add outdoor play beside the Kano River for a fuller driving break.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Strawberries, the produce market, Kawa no Eki, and the furnace can become a day of learning.

Link the food to where the fruit is grown, the Kano River, and Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace to explore the area's character.

Spaces used for events

Seasonal fairs at Ichigo BonBonBERRY

Winter through spring is a likely time for strawberry harvest festivals, limited parfaits, and chocolate or matcha fairs. Some products are limited in quantity, so check official channels and social media when planning a food-focused visit.

Farm to Table

Strawberry-picking events at the operator's own farm were advertised from January through April 2026. After those dates, check for regular menu options and whether an event is planned for the next season.

Roadside station anniversary festival

In late November 2025, an anniversary festival featured local products, food trucks, performances, and joint activities with the neighboring Kawa no Eki. Check whether another major autumn event is planned.

Kosaka Mikan Cooperative Orchard

Its approximate opening season, October 1 to January 5, lets you pair strawberry sweets with mandarin picking. Check the orchard's information for opening status and prices.

Izu Panorama Park

On a clear day, extend the trip to the views, flowers, footbath, and café. Ropeway operation, the last uphill departure, strong winds, and visibility all affect the visit.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Visitors often remember it as a strawberry station

Reviews and travel accounts often emphasize the strawberry sweets, gifts, and red shop décor more than the roadside station's name. On a first visit, Ichigo BonBonBERRY makes a good starting point.

Do not rely on the café alone at weekend lunchtime

Popular parfaits and café tables can mean a wait at busy times, but the stand, shop, and produce market offer alternatives. Decide whether to sit down or have a quick sweet according to how hungry your group is.

Treat seasonal events as possibilities, not permanent offerings

Strawberry-picking events and harvest festivals in 2026 had limited dates. For a winter or spring visit, check official channels and social media for current strawberry events.

Watch for outdated cycling-facility information

Older guides may still suggest visiting MERIDA X BASE, but its Izunokuni City facility closed on September 30, 2025. For a current visit, focus on strawberries, the market, lodging, and Kawa no Eki.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Ichigo BonBonBERRY's shop, café, and stand have different hours. For an evening stop, check the café's last admission first.
  • At weekend lunchtime, leave room to switch from a café wait to the stand, shop, produce market, or Kawa no Eki.
  • If an older guide recommends MERIDA X BASE, revise your plans in light of its announced closure on September 30, 2025.
  • For Kawa no Eki, consider summer sun, the ground after rain, and conditions for visitors with dogs.
  • At Izu Panorama Park, weather, wind, and the ropeway's last uphill departure can change the experience.
  • Kosaka Mikan Cooperative Orchard is a seasonal stop, generally open from October to the start of the new year. Outside that period, focus on the station's sweets and produce market.
  • Produce varies by season and delivery. Bring a cooler bag if shopping is a main goal.
