Gakuto’s roadside notes

Three hours for lunch and two months for corn: timing shapes this stop.

Gakuto Chitose thinks of this as a station to time your visit around. The restaurant opens 11:00–14:00, and Takane Corn appears only around August and September. Catch those windows and you can have a ¥900 keichan chicken set meal, then pick up salt-free suna pickles and native Hibata soba at the same stop. About 50 minutes from central Takayama, this stop on National Route 361 lets you choose both lunch and something to take home.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hida Takane Kobo is a red-brick roadside station on National Route 361 in Nakabora, Takane-cho, Takayama. At the Hida-side gateway to Takane, it looks toward Mount Norikura to the north and Mount Ontake to the south. The shop stocks Takane Corn with a sugar content of at least 17%, suna (酸菜), a salt-free fermented pickle, Hibata soba made from a native buckwheat variety of Hiwada Plateau, and egoma (perilla seed) oil. The restaurant serves keichan chicken set meals and Hida Takayama ramen at modest prices from 11:00 to 14:00. Editor Gakuto Chitose sees it as a place to choose both lunch and something to take home between central Takayama and Nomugi Pass or Kaida Plateau.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A red-brick station at the Hida-side gateway to Takane

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism describes the red-brick building as standing at the Hida-side entrance to Takane-cho. According to the Gifu travel guide, Mount Norikura is visible to the north and Mount Ontake to the south. A white dragon head, recalling a dragon legend at Somagaike Pond on Hiwada Plateau, marks the site. Whether you take National Route 361 toward Kiso and Kaida Plateau or head for Nomugi Pass, this is a starting point on the Takane side.

02

Takane Corn and suna are reasons to stop here

Each ear of Takane Corn weighs at least 400 g and has a sugar content of at least 17%, sweetness compared with melon; this Takane specialty is called “phantom corn.” The official sales season is around early August to late September, and the station does not hold, reserve, or ship it. The shop also carries suna (酸菜), a salt-free pickle made by lactic fermentation of red turnips, Hibata soba from a native buckwheat variety of Hiwada Plateau, and locally produced egoma (perilla seed) oil.

03

A short restaurant window and modest prices

The official site lists restaurant hours of 11:00–14:00 and normal Tuesday closure; an official notice says Tuesdays are also open from August 1 to October 30, 2026. Dishes include Hida Takayama ramen for ¥750, a keichan chicken set meal for ¥900, a Hida beef croquette set for ¥780, chilled zaru soba for ¥800, and an egg-over-rice set for ¥450, all tax included. These are modest prices for a mountain roadside stop. Plan lunch in advance: you cannot eat here if you miss the service window.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive from Takayama toward Kiso and Kaida Plateau

Time lunch for the restaurant, then follow Route 361

The restaurant has a narrow 11:00–14:00 window, so set your departure time around it. Have a keichan chicken set meal or Hida Takayama ramen, choose something to take home from the shop, then continue.

Central Takayama → National Routes 41 and 361 (about 50 minutes by car) → lunch and shopping at the station → east on National Route 361.

Tuesday is normally a closed day (the official notice says Tuesdays are open from August 1 to October 30, 2026). Hours also vary by period, so check the latest official notice before visiting.

An August or September weekend drive

Stop specifically for Takane Corn

Takane Corn is sold only from around early August to late September, and daily quantities depend on the weather and harvest. It cannot be held, reserved, or shipped. If you especially want it, arrive early or phone ahead to ask about stock.

Shop at the station → restaurant (11:00–14:00) → Hiwada Plateau area or Nomugi Pass.

Some days have no deliveries. Consider year-round purchases such as suna or Hibata soba as alternatives.

A half-day pass drive

Stock up before Nomugi Pass

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism puts Nomugi Pass about 60 minutes away by car. The station displays many photographs of the pass. When the pass-side Otasuke Goya hut closes for winter, the official site says some products, including pass stickers, are sold here instead.

Meal, toilets, and shopping at the station → Nomugi Pass (about 60 minutes by car) → return or continue to the Shinshu side.

Nomugi Pass closes to traffic in winter. Weather and road conditions affect travel time in the mountains; check road information first.

A day with time to linger

Pair Shiozawa Onsen Shichihokan with two ways to enjoy soba

The Gifu travel guide says Shiozawa Onsen Shichihokan, about 10 minutes away by car, serves handmade Hibata soba. Buy buckwheat flour or dried noodles at the station, then try freshly made soba at the onsen facility to enjoy the same native buckwheat in two forms.

Station shop and information corner → Shiozawa Onsen Shichihokan (about 10 minutes by car) → Takane No. 1 Dam area or return.

The onsen facility has separate hours and closed days. If you plan to eat there, check both facilities’ official information.

A break of 30 minutes or less

Make a short stop while passing through

Gifu Prefecture lists the parking lot and toilets as available 24 hours a day. That makes them useful for a rest on National Route 361 even outside shop hours or when you are in a hurry.

Park → use the toilets → buy one item at the shop if open → depart.

Shopping and meals are available only during shop and restaurant hours. Mobile reception and fuel stops can be limited in the mountains, so consider filling up on the Takayama side.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The restaurant serves 11:00–14:00; miss lunch and it is closed

The official eat-and-shop page states 11:00–14:00 hours and normal Tuesday closure, with a dated exception from August 1 to October 30, 2026. The drive from central Takayama takes about 50 minutes via National Routes 41 and 361, so decide when to leave with the lunch window in mind.

Check the latest official notice.

Suna and Hibata soba are distinctive Takane purchases

According to the Gifu travel guide, suna is a traditional pickle made by fermenting red turnips with lactic acid bacteria and no salt; it can be eaten as is or added to miso soup. Hibata soba is a native Hiwada Plateau buckwheat named for spring field burning. The guide says its flour and dried noodles are prized even by soba shops in other areas.

Parking and toilets are open 24 hours; shop and restaurant have set hours

Gifu Prefecture lists the parking lot and toilets as available 24 hours a day. Parking has 48 standard-car spaces, five large-vehicle spaces, and two spaces for people with disabilities. You can stop for a break outside business hours, but shopping and meals require the shop and restaurant to be open.

Nomugi Pass closes in winter; choose destinations by season

Gifu Prefecture says Nomugi Pass closes to traffic in winter. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism puts the pass about 60 minutes from the station by car and Ciao Ontake Snow Resort about 40 minutes away. A pass-and-plateau trip suits summer to autumn; the ski-resort side is a winter alternative.
