How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Start here
Original Hida mugwort udon

Made at the station using only the first locally harvested mugwort of spring, this is a Gifu Prefecture recommended souvenir. Buy fresh noodles in the shop or eat the dish at Yomogian.

For a meal
Yomogian's udon and Hida beef hoba miso set meal

Plain udon is ¥730, tempura udon ¥1,050, and the Hida beef hoba miso set meal ¥2,400 (all tax included). You can also switch the noodles to shiratama udon.

For shopping
Mugwort shochu, mugwort daifuku and appo

The official site describes mugwort shochu, a Japanese distilled spirit, as unusual even nationwide. In Hida, mochi rice cakes are called appo.

For a morning stop
Freshly picked vegetables at Rakuichi Hiroba

Seasonal vegetables arrive every morning from June to early November. Freshly picked tomatoes and corn are highlights.

For outdoor activity
Asahi-no-Sato ground golf course

Beside the station, this 3,000 m² course has eight holes and Korean lawn grass throughout. Mount Norikura can be seen in the distance. Telephone reservations are required.

Gakuto's detour notes

Choose a mugwort treat before continuing along Route 361.

Gakuto Okumura sees this station as a place to shop around a single theme: mugwort. There are fresh mugwort udon noodles made at the station, unusual mugwort shochu and seasonal mugwort tofu. In the morning, add vegetables picked that day from neighboring Rakuichi Hiroba. Even if you skip the restaurant, a shop visit gives you a reason to stop.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hida Asahi-mura is a roadside station in Asahi-cho, Takayama, about 20 km southeast of central Takayama on National Route 361. Its signature original Hida mugwort udon is made at the station using only the first locally harvested mugwort of spring. At Yomogian (蓬庵), you can eat the udon or a Hida beef and hoba miso set meal; the shop sells mugwort shochu and mugwort daifuku rice cakes. Next door, the Rakuichi Hiroba farmers' market stocks vegetables picked that morning each day from June to early November. The station closes on Wednesdays, and its facilities switch to shorter winter hours from November 21 to April 20.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Mugwort ties the station together

Both the shop and restaurant center on high-quality local mugwort from the first spring harvest. Choices include original Hida mugwort udon, mugwort shochu, mugwort tofu, mugwort daifuku and mugwort konnyaku. If you are deciding what to take home, mugwort gives the selection a clear theme.

02

The farmers' market comes alive in the morning

Next door, Rakuichi Hiroba sells local produce labeled with the grower's name and address. Seasonal vegetables arrive each morning from June to early November, and the official site says some customers come as soon as it opens. It is a worthwhile destination if you pass through in the morning.

03

The history of Route 361 is part of the journey

National Route 361 in front of the station was once known as the Edo Kaido and Buri Kaido, a main entrance route to Hida leading toward Nomugi Pass. Views of Mount Norikura and Mount Ontake from Asahi-cho, and the scenery from Suzuran Kogen, make the road itself part of the stop.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A day based in central Takayama

Fit lunch into a Takayama sightseeing trip

About 30 minutes by car and 20 km southeast of central Takayama, the station lets you leave the city crowds for mugwort udon or a Hida beef hoba miso set meal at Yomogian. Pick up a mugwort product at the shop, and the drive becomes time for both a meal and a souvenir. Hoba miso is miso grilled on a magnolia leaf.

Central Takayama → National Route 361 → Michi-no-Eki Hida Asahi-mura → central Takayama or toward Nomugi Pass

Closed Wednesdays (or the following day if Wednesday is a national holiday). Check the day before planning a meal here.

Mornings from June to early November

Visit for the morning farmers' market

Rakuichi Hiroba opens at 8:30. Look for freshly picked tomatoes and corn, seasonal wild vegetables and red turnips before heading on. Even a short stop brings Asahi-cho produce into the trip; this also suits a day when you can eat your purchases at your lodging.

Morning departure → Rakuichi Hiroba → shop → National Route 361

Seasonal fresh vegetables are mainly available June to early November. Winter opening shifts to 9:00.

A half day focused on mountain scenery

Pair the stop with views of Mount Norikura and Suzuran Kogen

The official site highlights views of Mount Norikura and Mount Ontake from Asahi-cho and panoramas from Suzuran Kogen. A meal and toilet stop at the station can fit naturally before heading up toward the highland.

Michi-no-Eki Hida Asahi-mura → toward Suzuran Kogen → toward Akigami Onsen or return route

Weather and road conditions change travel times in the mountains. During winter snow, be prepared to shorten the plan.

An active day from April to November

Add a session of ground golf

The adjacent Asahi-no-Sato ground golf course has eight holes on Korean lawn grass, with a gazebo in the middle. The cooperation fee is ¥500 for nonresidents and rental equipment costs ¥200 per set; you can play up to two rounds. Fit a session before or after a meal. Ground golf is a Japanese club-and-ball target game.

Michi-no-Eki Hida Asahi-mura → Asahi-no-Sato ground golf course → meal at Yomogian

Reserve by phone from one month ahead. Closed Wednesdays; the season runs from snowmelt to snowfall.

A full day in Asahi-cho

Continue to a campground or nearby highlands

Asahi-cho has Kurumijima Campground and Akigami Onsen. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism also lists Bijo Kogen about 10 minutes by car from the station and Kakureha Kogen about 20 minutes away. Shop and check the information corner at the station before setting out to plan your supplies and time.

Michi-no-Eki Hida Asahi-mura → Bijo Kogen or Kakureha Kogen → toward Kurumijima Campground

Kurumijima Campground has a separate operator and contact from the station. Check each facility's information for your visit date.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism lists infant facilities and a wheelchair-accessible toilet with a ramp. Follow signs on site for facility details, and allow for a short visit.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Keep eating, a brief walk in the park and returning to the car as separate short steps.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Mugwort is made into a signature product here

The official site states that original Hida mugwort udon is made at the station using only high-quality mugwort from the first local spring harvest. It is also a Gifu Prefecture recommended souvenir, so decide whether to buy fresh noodles to take home or eat the dish at the restaurant.

The farmers' market identifies its growers

The official site says Rakuichi Hiroba labels its produce with growers' names and addresses. Seasonal vegetables arrive each morning from June to early November, and some customers come as soon as it opens. A morning visit gives you the best reason to stop.

Route 361 was known as the Edo Kaido and Buri Kaido

The official site says National Route 361 in front of the station was once known as the Edo Kaido and Buri Kaido, a main approach to Hida leading toward Nomugi Pass. Knowing that history makes the road itself part of the visit.

The vegetable selection changes with the seasons

The official shipping guide lists orina greens, crown daisy and wild vegetables in spring; eggplant, cucumber, tomato, blueberry and corn in summer; leeks, red turnips, taro and Chinese cabbage in autumn; and perilla seeds, soybeans, cold-dried daikon and dried mugwort in winter. Shopping here changes with the season.

The bus from Takayama Station does not run every day

The official access guide warns that the route bus from Takayama Station does not run on weekends or national holidays and advises checking service. For a trip without a car, check the Nohi Bus Asahi Line timetable first.
