Gakuto’s stopover notes

Buy bread, sit down and eat it. That alone makes the stop worthwhile.

Gakuto Fujishiro sees this station as a place to break up a long drive on Route 41. It lists parking for 65 standard cars, and the toilets are open 24 hours. Buy a piece of fresh bread or a gelato and eat it seated at the restaurant; the pause helps you feel ready for the road again. For something to take home, try fruit from the farmers’ market or 100% juice pressed at the station.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hida Kaido Nagisa is a roadside station in Kugunocho Nagisa on National Route 41, roughly halfway between central Takayama and Gero Onsen. Its building evokes a Jomon-period pit dwelling, and a red lookout tower marks the site. Inside are a farmers’ market with fruit and vegetables brought in by Kuguno growers, 10–15 varieties of handmade bread baked daily, and Togenkyo gelato made with local fruit. The on-site apple and tomato juice workshop can sometimes be seen in operation. The restaurant focuses on Jomon udon, a noodle dish, tempura made with amago and iwana river fish, and Hida beef set meals. Parking and toilets are available 24 hours, making this a useful break on a long drive along Route 41.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A building that announces your arrival in Kuguno

The station building is modeled on a Jomon-period pit dwelling, with a red lookout tower as its landmark. Kuguno is known for its Jomon heritage, including the Donoue archaeological site, and the station takes “Jomon” and “harvest” as its themes. It is easy to spot from Route 41, giving you a reason to pull over before you even go inside.

02

Kuguno fruit, fresh and processed

Apples, peaches, pears and tomatoes grown in the cool upland climate anchor the farmers’ market. Gifu Prefecture’s tourism guide says 17 growers bring in apples, so you can compare varieties. The station’s juice workshop turns local apples and tomatoes into 100% juice.

03

Bread and gelato make a short break more enjoyable

The station bakes 10–15 kinds of handmade bread daily. Togenkyo gelato comes in flavors including local apple and blueberry, alongside classic milk. You can eat gelato bought at the shop at a restaurant table, giving you a chance to sit down even on a brief stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 30-minute stop en route

A quick break for bread and gelato

Park, use the toilet, then choose a piece of fresh-baked bread and sit down to eat it. Bread can sell out by lunchtime, so if you pass through in the morning, check the bakery first for the best selection.

Park → toilet → bread and gelato → depart.

The shop is open 8:30–17:00. Early morning or evening visits may be limited to the toilets and parking.

A drive spanning lunchtime

Have lunch at the restaurant

The menu includes Jomon udon, the Mahoroba set meal, a Hida beef set meal, tempura set meal and Nagisa set meal. There is also a weekday daily lunch special, and chilled soba and udon are advertised in summer. The official site says you may bring shop-bought gelato to your restaurant table for dessert.

Park → restaurant → farmers’ market → depart.

The restaurant is open 8:30–16:00, with last orders at 15:45. If you arrive during the 15:00 hour, eat first.

A shopping-focused visit

Stop to buy Kuguno fruit

Kuguno farmers bring produce to the market daily, so the selection changes. Look for peaches in summer; apples such as Tsugaru, Kosui pears and European pears in autumn; then new rice and chestnuts. The station’s 100% juice is a sturdy, easy-to-carry option for the trip home.

Park → farmers’ market → local products corner → juice workshop → depart.

Availability varies by day. If you want a particular fruit, check the official station notices for recent arrivals before leaving.

A long drive of half a day or more

Break up the drive between Takayama and Gero

The station is about 30 minutes along Route 41 from either Takayama IC on the Chubu Jukan Expressway or Gero Onsen, putting it roughly midway between them. A stop before or after the Miya Pass section makes the onward drive easier. Toilets and parking are available 24 hours, whatever time you travel.

Takayama IC (or Gero Onsen) → National Route 41 → station break → destination.

This is a mountain road, and winter conditions can change both the road surface and travel time. Allow extra time in the snow season.

A day with spare time

Take a short detour beyond the station

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism lists Meoto Falls Park as about 3 minutes away by car and fruit farms as about 10 minutes away. Shop and rest at the station first, then make a brief side trip to see Kuguno’s terrain and orchard scenery. These short distances make the detour easier to fit into an itinerary.

Station → Meoto Falls Park (女男滝公園) → return to National Route 41.

Nearby facilities’ hours and road conditions can change. Check each destination before setting off.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose a parking spot

Parking for 65 standard cars is listed, along with designated parking spaces for people with disabilities and a ramp. A level space that is easy to walk from may be more comfortable than simply choosing the closest one to the entrance.

  2. 2
Visit the toilets and shop first

Some toilet fixtures remain open 24 hours. The farmers’ market, bakery, gelato and local products corner are in the same building, so you can browse without unnecessary backtracking.

  3. 3
Sit down to eat before departing

Gelato from the shop may be eaten at a restaurant table. Sit and enjoy what you bought, then rest before returning to Route 41 for the next leg.

Seasons at the farmers’ market

The selection shifts from peaches in summer to apples, Japanese and European pears in autumn, followed by new rice and chestnuts. Winter brings limited-quantity apple pie sold by advance reservation only.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The building itself introduces Kuguno

The pit-dwelling-inspired exterior and red lookout tower are easy to spot from Route 41. Kuguno has Jomon heritage at the Donoue archaeological site, and the station is themed around “Jomon” and “harvest.” Its appearance hints at what you will find inside, making a first visit easier.

There is more bread to choose from in the morning

The bakery makes 10–15 varieties daily, but the official site says its popularity can lead to sold-out items by lunchtime. If bread is the goal, a morning stop offers a better selection.

About halfway between Takayama and Gero

The official guide puts the station about 30 minutes along Route 41 from both Takayama IC on the Chubu Jukan Expressway and Gero Onsen. It is also listed as about 15 minutes from Kuguno Station on the JR Takayama Line. This makes a useful break on the long Route 41 drive, with toilets and parking available 24 hours.

The fruit selection changes by season

Official notices have listed peaches in summer; Tsugaru apples, Kosui pears and Bartlett European pears in early autumn; then newly harvested glutinous rice and chestnuts. In winter, apple pie made with local apples is sold in limited quantities by advance reservation only. The best time to visit depends on what you hope to buy.

EV fast charging became paid in June 2026

An official notice says a new paid fast charger replaced the free charger installed by Takayama City. The listed rate is ¥44/kWh including tax, payable by credit card or electronic payment. An additional fee applies if the vehicle remains connected for 5 minutes or more after charging ends.
