Gakuto's detour notes

Choose bread or ayu, then walk to the river.

Gakuto Kanzaki sees this as a place to shop before heading outdoors. Choose handmade bread or wild ayu at Sanmaze Kobo, pay, then walk to Mizube no Yakata or the trail in Shinrin Park. With the shop and riverside close together, the stop can fill 30 minutes or a day. In winter, shorter opening hours and fewer opening days make it sensible to visit the shop first.

Highlights

Roadside Station Maze Miki no Sato stands on Gifu Prefectural Route 431, the Shimoyama-Namaru Line, beside the clear Maze River in Gero City. Next door, Sanmaze Kobo sells bread handmade by local women, frozen wild ayu (sweetfish) from the upper Maze River, seasonal vegetables, and winter yawai (nezushi), a local winter specialty. Maze ramen is served inside. Gakuto Kanzaki suggests choosing something at the shop before walking to Mizube no Yakata or Shinrin Park.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Sanmaze Kobo is a reason to stop here

Bread handmade by local women, frozen wild ayu from the upper Maze River, handmade sweets, seasonal vegetables, and winter yawai (nezushi): the selection described by Gifu's official tourism site and Gero City makes shopping a purpose of the stop in its own right. Maze ramen is served inside, so even a short break can include a local taste.

02

Walk straight from the station to the Maze River

Next door, Mizube no Yakata is a fishing center on the Maze River. Its activities include making gohei-mochi (grilled rice cakes) and pizza, catching amago trout by hand, making hanamochi rice-flour decorations, and ayu fishing. Shinrin Park, with a wood-chip trail for a walk among the trees, is in the same area. Shop at the station first, then turn a rest stop into a short outing.

03

Opening hours change with the seasons

Sanmaze Kobo opens 9:00–16:00 from April through December and 9:00–15:00 from January through March. Gero City also lists it as open only on weekends and public holidays in January and February. Check the day and hours before counting on the shop during a winter drive. The toilets are available 24 hours.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A day for shopping

Make the shop your destination

Focus on Sanmaze Kobo's handmade bread and frozen wild ayu. Pick bread to eat in the car and ayu or vegetables to take home; even a short visit can feel worthwhile.

Park → toilet → Sanmaze Kobo → depart.

Seasonal products and stock vary by day. Hours are 9:00–16:00 from April through December and 9:00–15:00 from January through March.

A half-day outing

Extend the visit to Mizube no Yakata and Shinrin Park

After shopping and eating at the station, head to Mizube no Yakata beside the Maze River. Activities include making gohei-mochi and pizza, catching amago trout by hand, and ayu fishing. Add Shinrin Park's trail for an outing beyond the station.

Station → Mizube no Yakata → Shinrin Park.

Activities and operating periods change. Check ahead if taking part is central to your plans.

A leisurely day out

Make a day of it with a hot spring

Spa Miki, about two minutes away by car, has open-air baths, bubble baths, water jets aimed at the lower back, waterfall-style showers, and a dry sauna. Shop at the station first and leave the baths for last to make managing your bags and time easier.

Station → Sanmaze Kobo → Spa Miki.

Check Miki no Sato's official information for the hot spring's hours and admission prices.

A 30-minute break on Prefectural Route 431

Take a short break while passing through

The toilets are available 24 hours, and there is an information corner and a free rest area. Even if you cannot stay long, a piece of bread offers a taste of the area.

Park → toilet → information corner or shop → depart.

The shop and cafe/light meals operate only during opening hours. Gifu Prefecture lists the footbath as closed, so leave it out of your plans. At night and in winter, expect the toilets and parking area to be the main facilities available.

A January–February drive

Check winter opening days first

Gero City lists Sanmaze Kobo as open only on weekends and public holidays in January and February, so do not count on weekday shopping. Plan for an opening day if shopping is the aim; on a weekday, use the station mainly for a break.

Check the day → rest at the station → visit the shop if open.

Snow and icy surfaces can change travel times on this mountain road. Check road conditions in winter too.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

The 24-hour toilets and free rest area make a short break convenient.

The shop and rest area are mostly indoors. Keep the stop short and plan to carry your child.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A short circuit of the shop and free rest area works well.

If you go down to the Maze River, put safety at the water's edge and underfoot first, and keep the walk short.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A walk to Shinrin Park's trail can help keep children engaged.

The wood-chip trail makes it easy to shop at the station before heading outside.

Primary school children
★★★★☆

Easy to combine with activities at Mizube no Yakata.

Activities include catching amago trout by hand, ayu fishing, and making gohei-mochi or pizza. Check the activities and dates ahead of time.

Toilets

A useful 24-hour toilet stop on a mountain road. Facilities for people with disabilities are also listed.

Indoor rest

During the information building's listed hours, it provides a place to rest and check information. Confirm access if the shop is closed.
