Taketo’s detour notes

Check the hours first, then take your time.

Taketo Mizuno sees this station as a place to get ready before exploring Tanigumi. Once you have allowed for Tuesday closures and shorter winter hours, there is little reason to hurry. The 26-space car parking area is not large, so choose a spot with comfortable walking access rather than insisting on one close to the entrance. Have a bowl of chuka soba, pick up a prepared venison product in the hall, then take a breather in the park before heading to Kegon-ji Temple.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yume Sansan Tanigumi is on Prefectural Route 40, the Sando–Motosu Line, about 2.5 km west of the Tanigumi intersection. The product hall focuses on gibier (game meat), including sliced venison, venison hamburg steaks and venison jerky, alongside locally grown vegetables. At Tanigumi Shokudo, you can have chuka soba (Japanese-style Chinese noodles) or rice bowls and noodles made with domestic pork. The parking area and toilets are available 24 hours a day, and the adjacent Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park gives you room to get out of the car and walk a little. Nearby are Tanigumisan Kegon-ji Temple, Ryokaizan Yokokura-ji Temple and Tenno-rin, a grove planted by Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun. It is an easy stop to pair with temple visits or a walk in the mountain countryside.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Gibier is the product hall’s signature

Along with sliced venison, there are processed products such as venison hamburg steaks and venison jerky. Start at the gibier display to get a feel for the station, rather than browsing every souvenir first. When buying chilled or frozen items, consider how long they will take to get home.

02

Chuka soba and domestic pork at Tanigumi Shokudo

Chuka soba, a Japanese-style Chinese noodle dish, leads the restaurant menu. Other options include rice bowls and noodles featuring domestic pork, house-made gyoza dumplings and a tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) set meal: substantial choices on a mountain-area drive.

03

An adjoining park makes a longer break possible

Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park adjoins the station, and Satoyama BBQ uses the barbecue house in the park. You can eat, take a short walk and get some fresh air before driving on.

04

A starting point for Kegon-ji and Yokokura-ji temples

Nearby are Tanigumisan Kegon-ji Temple, Ryokaizan Yokokura-ji Temple and Tenno-rin, the grove planted by Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun. The station is a convenient place to eat and shop before or after visiting the temples.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A half-day temple drive

Pair the stop with a visit to Tanigumisan Kegon-ji Temple

Eating lunch and shopping at the station before heading to Kegon-ji means you need not rush around the temple approach. The restaurant opens at 11:00; if you arrive in the morning, browse the product hall and park first.

Station (product hall and Tanigumi Shokudo) → Tanigumisan Kegon-ji Temple → Ryokaizan Yokokura-ji Temple or the drive home.

Tanigumi Shokudo, the product hall and Satoyama BBQ close on Tuesdays. Check temple visiting hours separately.

A shopping trip

Stop for gibier

Sliced venison, prepared products such as venison hamburg steaks, and venison jerky are the product hall’s focus. Stock varies by day, so leave room to discover what is on the shelves.

Park → product hall → browse locally grown vegetables → depart.

A cooler gives you more options for chilled or frozen products. Stock changes from day to day.

A drive on Prefectural Route 40

Take a break before or after the mountain roads

Parking and toilets are available 24 hours a day, with designated accessible parking spaces and a ramp. This makes the station useful as a rest stop even outside business hours.

Park → toilets → short walk in Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park → depart.

You cannot shop or eat at the product hall and restaurant outside their opening hours.

A day paced to your companions

Spend some time in the park

The adjoining Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park lets you spend waiting time or time after a meal outdoors. It gives you more ways to pace the visit than staying inside the station buildings.

Station → Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park → shop in the product hall → depart.

Outdoor plans depend on the weather. On a rainy day, focusing on the product hall and restaurant may be easier.

A leisurely day with a group

Plan a visit to Satoyama BBQ

Satoyama BBQ uses the barbecue house in Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park and advertises meat and locally grown vegetables for a visit without bringing barbecue equipment. It is an option for a planned outing rather than a quick stop.

Station → Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park barbecue house → product hall → drive home.

Check the official site for conditions, operating period and how to book. It closes on Tuesdays.

★★★☆☆

You can break the visit into short stretches: eat, walk a little in the park and return to the car.

Children can move around in the adjacent Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park, but outdoor plans depend on the weather.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The park gives you ways to spend time at the station itself.

The restaurant opens at 11:00. If you arrive early, visit the park and product hall while you wait.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

The gibier display and a detour to Kegon-ji Temple offer things to talk about.

Venison in the product hall offers a way to discuss the surrounding mountain area. Allow travel time if you extend the trip to the temple.

Toilets

Listings give eight men’s fixtures and six women’s fixtures, plus one accessible toilet and a ramp.

Parking

The car park is not large. On holidays, it may be easier to park where space is available than to seek a spot near the entrance.

Outdoor play

The visit depends on the weather. On rainy days, plan around the product hall and restaurant.

Meals

Closed on Tuesdays. For a family meal, allow for another option if the timing does not work.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Check the day and hours first

Tanigumi Shokudo, the product hall and Satoyama BBQ close on Tuesdays. Winter hours also change, so checking the official information before leaving makes the day easier.

  2. 2
Choose a comfortable place to park

The 26-space car parking area is not large. There are two designated accessible spaces and a ramp. Choose comfortable walking access rather than simply the closest space to the entrance.

  3. 3
    Decide whether to eat first

Restaurant hours are relatively short: 11:00–15:00, until 14:00 in winter. If you arrive around lunch, eat first; if the timing does not work, visit the product hall first.

  4. 4
Walk only as far as feels comfortable in the park

The adjacent Tanigumi Ryokuchi Park is a pleasant place for a short walk and a breather. Check the weather and footing, and keep the walk brief if that suits you.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Check Tuesdays and winter hours ahead of time

Tanigumi Shokudo, the product hall and Satoyama BBQ close every Tuesday, and winter opening hours and closing days may change. The information exchange hall is listed as open daily, while parking and toilets are available 24 hours a day, so the station remains useful for a break on a closing day.

Gibier is a clear theme here

The station sells sliced venison, processed products such as hamburg steaks, and venison jerky. Gifu Prefecture’s tourism information also highlights these game-meat products, making them a useful starting point if you are undecided about a souvenir.

Start with the chuka soba at the restaurant

The restaurant description leads with chuka soba, a Japanese-style Chinese noodle dish, followed by rice bowls and noodles featuring domestic pork. House-made gyoza dumplings and tonkatsu set meals offer choices for either a light or a more substantial meal.

Plan around a modest parking area

Listings give 26 car spaces, one large-vehicle space and two designated accessible spaces. Capacity is limited compared with a large facility, so during busy travel periods it may be quicker to take an available space than to look for one beside the entrance.

There are destinations beyond the station

Nearby are Tanigumisan Kegon-ji Temple, Ryokaizan Yokokura-ji Temple and Tenno-rin, the grove planted by Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun. Combining the stop with temple visits or a walk in the mountain countryside can make for a fuller day.

Before your visit

  • If buying chilled or frozen venison, bring a cooler to give yourself more choice.
