Taketo's stopover notes

Choose the day and season first, and this station becomes much easier to use.

Parking, toilets, a place to rest and opening hours are the four things Taketo Shinohara checks first. Montdeus Hida Kuraiyama is particularly useful for toilets and rest, while meals depend on the day and season. Avoid Wednesday in the green season and arrange food elsewhere on weekdays. With those decisions made, you can stop comfortably at the foot of Mt. Kurai.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Montdeus Hida Kuraiyama is a roadside station on Gifu Prefectural Route 98, the Miya–Hagiwara Line, at the foot of Mt. Kurai in Takayama's Ichinomiyamachi district. The building also serves as the center house for Takayama Municipal Ski Area. Bunseirei Park, Kuraiyama Sports Ground and the Kuraiyama walking trail share the grounds. With toilets listed as available 24 hours, a free rest area, information corner, children's room, library and theater, guide Taketo Shinohara recommends it for a reliable toilet stop, a rest and time indoors, rather than making a meal the main reason to visit. During the green season (April–November), the restaurant and café are listed as open on weekends and public holidays, while Wednesday is listed as the station's regular closing day. Choose your visiting day before planning around a meal.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The ski resort center house is also the roadside station

The station is a central facility of Takayama City's Kuraiyama Exchange Plaza, Montdeus Park, and doubles as the center house for Takayama Municipal Ski Area. It offers a place to park at the foot of Mt. Kurai and move between indoor rest space and the outdoors, beyond its shops and dining.

02

An easy place to plan a toilet and rest stop

Gifu Prefecture's roadside station guide lists toilets available 24 hours, as well as a free rest area and information corner. Route 98 runs through mountainous terrain, so having a place to stop even outside business hours is useful.

03

Meal availability depends on the day and season

The Hida Takayama Travel Guide lists the restaurant and café as open on weekends and public holidays in the green season (April–November) and every day in ski season (December–March). If you want to eat on a weekday drive, arrange another option as well.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A half-day drive

Take a short drive from central Takayama to the foot of Mt. Kurai

Gifu's official tourism site lists the drive from JR Takayama Station via National Route 41 as 20 minutes. The setting changes from city streets to mountain scenery without a long trip. At the station, check the information corner for local guidance, step out toward the plaza for a few minutes, then return.

JR Takayama Station and central Takayama → National Route 41 → Gifu Prefectural Route 98 (Miya–Hagiwara Line) → Michi-no-Eki Montdeus Hida Kuraiyama

Wednesday is listed as the regular closing day in the green season, shifting to the following day if Wednesday is a public holiday. Check ahead around those days.

A family drive when the weather is uncertain

Take an indoor break with children

The Chubu Regional Development Bureau and Hida Takayama Travel Guide list a children's room, library and theater among the facilities. They offer a change of scene indoors when outdoor play is difficult during a longer drive. The National Michi-no-Eki Association also lists a baby bed.

Park → toilets → indoor break → park and children's play area if the weather holds

Follow on-site signs for access and availability. Individual use may be unavailable on event days.

Outdoor time in the green season

Stretch your legs with a dog

Takayama City's facility guide lists the plaza parking area, dog run, park and exchange center as available. The Hida Takayama Travel Guide lists the dog run as free in the green season. Continue beyond the station building into the plaza to make more of the stop.

Individual use may be unavailable on event days. Check opening dates before visiting.

December–March

Use it as the ski season center house

In winter, the center house is listed as open daily, as are the restaurant and café. The facility guide introduces the restaurants Bunseirei (分水嶺) and Yamanami (やまなみ). A roadside station stop and a base for the ski slopes share one building here.
