If you want to eat

Hida Kanayama miso, local sake from Okuhida Shuzo, and vegetables at Asatori Yokocho

Taketo’s stopover notes

Bath first or lunch first? Decide that, and this stop becomes easy.

Taketo Kobayakawa sees this station as a rest stop with a clear timetable. The baths open at 11:00, lunch runs from 11:00 to 14:00, Asatori Yokocho closes at 15:00, and the shop stays open until 20:00. Work backward from your arrival time and decide the order of bathing and eating; almost everything else is a short walk from the car park. If you still have energy, drive down to Kanayama-juku and walk its narrow lanes on the Kinkotsu route. Resting at the station before the town walk is easier on the legs.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hida Kanayama Nukumori no Sato Onsen stands on National Route 256 in Kanayama-cho, Gero City. It brings together a large indoor bath and open-air baths fed by a simple alkaline hot spring, a restaurant serving everything from Hida beef set meals to local chicken keichan, eight guest rooms, and the adjacent Asatori Yokocho farm stand. Taketo Kobayakawa suggests planning a visit around the parking for 33 cars and four large vehicles and the station’s 9:00–20:00 hours: bathe, have lunch, then take home local miso and sake.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

An open-air day-use hot spring right inside the station

The station operates large indoor and open-air baths for men and women, fed by a simple alkaline hot spring. Bath hours are 11:00–20:00, with last admission at 19:15; on Thursdays, cleaning delays opening until 13:00. The official list of conditions for which bathing is indicated includes neuralgia, muscle pain, frozen shoulder, and motor paralysis. After a long drive through the valley, you can go straight into the baths.

02

Lunch choices range from Hida beef meals to set meals in the ¥1,000s

The restaurant lists a Hida beef loin meal at ¥4,180; Hida beef sukiyaki and Hida beef short-rib sets at ¥2,640 each; a Hida pork tonkatsu set at ¥1,870; a local chicken keichan set at ¥1,320; and Hida pork cutlet rice bowl and special miso-simmered udon at ¥1,210 each. Keichan is a local seasoned chicken dish. Lunch runs 11:00–14:00. Dinner is served only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, 17:00–20:00 (last order 19:15); there is no weekday dinner service.

03

Stay overnight, with a farm stand and shop next door

There are eight guest rooms, with check-in from 15:00 and checkout by 10:00. The Japanese-style rooms are described as overlooking the clear stream below. The shop, open 9:00–20:00, sells Hida Kanayama miso and sake from Okuhida Shuzo. Adjacent Shunsen Asatori Yokocho is open 9:00–15:00 (closed over New Year) and sells vegetables and wild greens from farms around Kanayama.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A longer break while driving Routes 256 and 41

Lunch and a bath in about two hours

Arrive around 11:00 and both the restaurant (11:00–14:00) and baths (11:00–20:00) are open. Eat first and bathe afterward, then head straight back to the car.

Park → restaurant → baths → shop → depart.

On Thursdays the baths open at 13:00; the station closes on the third Thursday (or the preceding Tuesday if that Thursday is a public holiday).

A shopping-focused stop

Choose vegetables and wild greens at the farm stand in the morning

Adjacent Shunsen Asatori Yokocho runs 9:00–15:00. It stocks vegetables and wild greens from farms around Kanayama, and advertises apples in winter. Add miso and sake from the shop for a worthwhile take-home stop.

Park → Asatori Yokocho → shop (miso and sake) → depart.

Asatori Yokocho closes at 15:00 and over the New Year holidays. Stock varies by season and delivery.

A one-night trip without a packed travel day

Stay overnight and walk Kanayama-juku the next morning

Check-in for the eight guest rooms begins at 15:00. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, dinner is available on site from 17:00 to 20:00. Visit the Kinkotsu alley walk in Hida Kaido Kanayama-juku and the Kanayama Megaliths the next day to separate driving from walking.

Stay at the station → next morning, Kinkotsu alley walk in Kanayama-juku → Kanayama Megaliths → head home.

No dinner is served on weekdays. Check lodging and meal booking terms on the official website.

A late-day stop

For an evening arrival, focus on the baths and shop

Lunch ends at 14:00 and there is no weekday dinner service. Bath admission still runs until 19:15, and the shop remains open until 20:00. A bath and one purchase of miso or sake still make a useful break.

Park → baths → shop → depart.

Check whether you can arrive before last bath admission at 19:15. Call ahead if you may be late.

A half-day drive

Combine Yokotani Gorge or the megaliths with a half-day outing

The station’s sightseeing information highlights the four waterfalls of Yokotani Gorge to the north on Prefectural Route 86, the Kanayama Megaliths, and the huge and unusually shaped rocks of Kanayama-cho. Walk outdoors first and bathe on your return, so you can change after getting sweaty.

Station → Yokotani Gorge’s four waterfalls or Kanayama Megaliths → baths at the station → head home.

Mountain roads and waterfall paths take longer depending on the weather and footing. Plan your return around the baths’ last admission.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Most needs can be met indoors, and a baby changing bed is listed.

The National Roadside Station Association lists a baby changing bed. The route from parking to the facilities is short, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet and ramp are listed, making it easier to move around while carrying a child.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Works well if you can fit the lunch hours.

The restaurant runs 11:00–14:00. Keep meals and breaks short, and plan for family members to take turns bathing. The baths have a child admission rate; check the amount on the official website.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The hot spring and indoor heated pool offer options in poor weather.

The transport ministry’s facility listing includes an indoor heated pool and sports ground among the adjoining facilities. Their operators may differ from the station’s, so confirm opening days and fees before using them.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

The Kanayama Megaliths and Kinkotsu alley walk add things to explore.

Events to observe the sun’s movement at the Kanayama Megaliths take place several times a year, while the Kinkotsu walk in Hida Kaido Kanayama-juku is a guided tour through narrow lanes. On a walking day, leave the station’s baths until last.

Toilets

The transport ministry lists eight men’s fixtures, nine women’s fixtures, one accessible toilet, and a ramp.

For small children

Follow on-site signs for its location and available hours.

Meals

There is no weekday dinner; it is best not to make this your family’s only possible meal stop.

Time indoors

You can wait indoors during rain or heat.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Choose a parking space

The listing gives 33 car spaces, four large-vehicle spaces, and three accessible spaces. Capacity is modest, so choosing an easy-to-walk-from space may be quicker than waiting for one close to the entrance.

  2. 2
Decide whether to eat or bathe first

The baths open at 11:00 with last admission at 19:15; lunch ends at 14:00. Decide your order in the car park to avoid unnecessary walking inside.

  3. 3
    Save shopping for last

The shop stays open until 20:00. If you want to carry purchases for less time, choose miso or sake once, on your way out.

  4. 4
Use the station as a base for the town walk

The lanes on the Kinkotsu route are narrow and have slopes. Eat and bathe at the station, then drive down and walk only as far as comfortable before returning.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Plan this stop by its timetable

Baths 11:00–20:00 (last admission 19:15); lunch 11:00–14:00; dinner only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays; Asatori Yokocho 9:00–15:00; shop 9:00–20:00. What you can do depends on your arrival time, so check it before setting off.

Miso and local sake are the main take-home choices

The shop advertises Hida Kanayama miso and sake from local brewer Okuhida Shuzo. For vegetables and wild greens, go next door to Asatori Yokocho. Their closing times differ, so choose your order according to what you want to buy.

Seasonal choices change what you buy and where you walk

Asatori Yokocho stocks wild greens and seasonal vegetables, and advertises apples in winter. Nearby Naeshirozakura and Nakayama Shichiri cherry blossoms and walks to Yokotani Gorge’s waterfalls make different seasons worth exploring.
