Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A gateway to the Kiso Road between Mino and Kiso

The Nakatsugawa Tourism Association describes Shizumo as a gateway to Kiso. If you are heading north on National Route 19 toward Kiso or Shiojiri, this is a place to eat and shop before crossing the prefectural border.

02

Build a meal or shopping stop around goheimochi

The station names goheimochi and imoyakomochi as specialties. The restaurant offers set meals, the snack counter sells goheimochi by the skewer, and the shop sells its sauce. Decide whether you want something to eat now or ingredients to take home.

03

A Higashiyama Kaii print gallery next door

The adjacent Nakatsugawa City Higashiyama Kaii Kokoro no Tabiji Museum permanently exhibits prints donated by the artist. Add about 30 minutes to your stop to visit the gallery on the station grounds.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A day heading north on National Route 19

Eat before entering the Kiso Road

The restaurant opens 8:30–18:00, with last orders at 17:20. Choices include goheimochi and imoyakomochi set meals, sauce katsudon (a pork cutlet rice bowl), and soba associated with the Kiso Road. Places to eat become more spread out after the prefectural border, so eating here can make the onward drive easier to plan.

Park → restaurant → shop → head toward the Kiso Road.

The restaurant closes on Wednesdays, or the following day if Wednesday is a public holiday. For a Wednesday stop, plan around the snack counter and shop.

A day to gather souvenirs in one place

Make shopping the main event

The shop carries pounded daifuku rice cakes, local karasumi rice sweets, soba manju, pickled nozawana greens and Kiso greens, local sake from Nakatsugawa and Kiso, and Kiso cypress products. Chestnut-paste daifuku and hoba-maki leaf-wrapped sweets are seasonal; sunki pickles are offered in winter.

Park → shop → snack counter → depart.

Seasonal products vary by time of year. Check the station's official information shortly before visiting if you want a particular item.

A half-day drive

Add a visit to the print museum

The adjacent Nakatsugawa City Higashiyama Kaii Kokoro no Tabiji Museum is open 9:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. It normally closes on Wednesdays, or the following day when Wednesday is a holiday. The city's current adult admission is ¥330. About 30 minutes after eating and shopping can turn a rest stop into a small itinerary.

Station → Higashiyama Kaii Kokoro no Tabiji Museum → Kiso Road or Magome area.

Hours, closure days, and admission may change; check Nakatsugawa City's guidance. The museum also closes from December 27 to January 5 and may close temporarily.

A long-distance drive

Take an early-morning or nighttime break

Parking and toilets are listed as available 24 hours a day. Even when the shops are shut, you can use the station as a rest stop.

Park → toilets → rest → depart.

Shopping and dining have limited hours. If you intend to eat, plan your arrival around the opening hours.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

A nursing room and toilets make this useful for a short break.

The official site lists nursing-room hours as 9:00–17:00. Follow the conditions posted on site and plan a short stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Break the visit into eating, a quick circuit of the shop, and returning to the car.

This is not a place for extended indoor play. Beside National Route 19, hold children's hands when moving through the parking area.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Goheimochi or soft-serve ice cream gives children a clear treat to look forward to.

If the restaurant wait looks long, switching to the snack counter may keep the day's plan on track.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Adding the neighboring print gallery makes this more than a rest stop.

The Higashiyama Kaii Kokoro no Tabiji Museum normally closes on Wednesdays. On an open day, the stop offers a chance to talk about this area's role as the entrance to the Kiso Road.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The Mino–Kiso boundary gives you a reason to stop

The Nakatsugawa Tourism Association calls Shizumo a gateway to Kiso. Treating it as a pause before or after crossing the prefectural border on National Route 19 can help shape the journey, beyond a simple break.

Goheimochi and imoyakomochi are the specialties

The station's official site puts goheimochi and imoyakomochi first among its food choices. Choose a set meal in the restaurant, one goheimochi skewer at the snack counter, or sauce from the shop according to how long you have.

The shop has a strong Kiso selection

Alongside Japanese sweets such as pounded daifuku and local karasumi, you can find pickled nozawana greens, Kiso greens and red turnips, soba, sake from Nakatsugawa and Kiso, and Kiso cypress products. It suits a day when you want to collect souvenirs in one place.

The parking lot has designated entry and exit sides

The station's access guide says the Kiso side is entrance-only and the Nagoya side exit-only. Coming from Nagoya, pass the first exit and enter from the Kiso-side right-turn lane 150 m farther on.

The day of the week changes your options

The restaurant closes every Wednesday, or the next day if Wednesday is a public holiday. The neighboring Higashiyama Kaii Kokoro no Tabiji Museum also normally closes on Wednesdays, moving its closure to the next day when Wednesday is a holiday. On a regular Wednesday, plan around the shop and snack counter.
