How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, on arrival
Check what you want to take home at the product hall and fresh market

For Meiho Ham, tomato ketchup, keichan and seasonal vegetables, it helps to plan space in your luggage and how to keep chilled items cool.

For lunch
Aim for Kissa Meiho, with snack stalls as alternatives on busy days

The cafe offers local set meals, and the station has many snack tenants. At lunchtime on holidays or during autumn foliage season, keep more than one option in mind.

For a short break
Make a short circuit of the outdoor toilets, product hall, Surusumian and park

The car park and outdoor toilets are listed as available 24 hours. Outside shop hours, plan on a rest stop without shopping or dining.

With children
Combine the nursing room in the south toilet building with a park walk

There are facilities for diaper changing and nursing, and the Yoshida River is close by. Keep river play brief and check weather and water levels.

For a seasonal visit
Moss phlox in spring, fresh green leaves in early summer, autumn colours, and onsen or skiing in winter

The Seseragi Road is especially appealing in different seasons, but winter brings ice and snow. Check road conditions and Meiho Tourism Association updates.

If staying until evening
Finish at Meiho Onsen Yuseikan

It is about 15 minutes away by car. If bathing is your aim, check the official notice for Wednesday closures and special hours.

Morisaki's rest-stop notes

Choose what to eat here, then go and see the river.

Morisaki sees Meiho as more than a popular roadside station. On arrival, he first takes a quick look at the toilets, product hall, fresh market and dining options. Will it be Meiho Ham or keichan, a quick snack, or food to keep chilled and take home? Once that is decided, there is time to enjoy the Yoshida River from Surusumi no Sato Park.

Lunch, shopping, then a riverside break: knowing the order makes a Seseragi Road detour easier.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Meiho (Surusumi no Sato Park) lies midway along the Hida–Mino Seseragi Road between Gujo Hachiman and Hida Takayama. Browse Meiho Ham, Meiho tomato ketchup, keichan (seasoned chicken), wild vegetables and summer tomatoes in the product hall, then choose a meal or snack at Kissa Meiho, Meiho Meat, Onisuke or Kuromugi. Beyond eating and shopping, the park offers views of the clear Yoshida River, making a driving break into a short visit to Meiho.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Plenty of places to eat, beyond Meiho Ham

Buy Meiho Ham, Meiho tomato ketchup, keichan (seasoned chicken) and Meiho game meat at the product hall; try a keichan set meal or Meiho Ham cutlet at Kissa Meiho, a Meiho frankfurter or croquette at Meiho Meat, or freshly made rice balls at Onisuke. Even if you miss lunch, snacks and takeaway offer a taste of Meiho.

02

The fresh market and park make this more than a shopping stop

Shinsenichi Meiho changes with the seasons: wild vegetables in spring, tomatoes and cucumbers in summer, new rice and root vegetables in autumn, and Chinese cabbage and daikon in winter. After shopping, walk down to Surusumi no Sato Park for views of the Yoshida River and mountain village scenery and a break from driving.

03

Reconsider your next stop between Gujo Hachiman and Takayama

The station is about 15 minutes from Gujo Hachiman Interchange, on the Seseragi Road toward Takayama. Meiho Onsen, Meiho Ski Resort, the Kunita Family Moss Phlox and the Meiho Museum of History and Folklore are within reach, letting you choose a meal, walk, hot spring or seasonal flowers according to time and weather.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive from Gujo Hachiman toward Takayama; a holiday lunch

Make a Seseragi Road lunch break a chance to compare Meiho foods

After browsing Meiho Ham, keichan and tomato ketchup in the product hall, choose a set meal at Kissa Meiho, a Meiho frankfurter at Meiho Meat, rice balls at Onisuke or soba at Kuromugi. With several places to eat, you can adjust your plans if there is a queue or a shop is closed.

Car park → product hall → Kissa Meiho or another tenant → fresh market → Surusumian

Parking and food queues can coincide at lunchtime and during autumn foliage season. Leave purchases that need chilling until last, or bring an insulated bag.

A short break, families with children, visitors with dogs and a change of scene on a long drive

Walk down to the Yoshida River after shopping to unwind from driving

Surusumi no Sato Park is a short walk from the station car park, with views of the clear Yoshida River and the mountain village. Even a 5–15 minute walk while waiting for food or after shopping offers a break from the car.

Outdoor toilets → product hall or snack → Surusumi no Sato Park → Surusumi statue

Weather, water level and footing affect the riverbank. Keep small children back from the water and shorten the visit after rain.

Seasonal photography, travel with grandparents and an unhurried Meiho visit

Build a half-day trip around spring moss phlox or autumn foliage

The Kunita Family Moss Phlox is a spring attraction; early summer brings fresh greenery and autumn brings colour to the Seseragi Road. Eating and using the toilets at the station before moving on gives you a place to pause if the flower or foliage sites are crowded.

Michi-no-Eki Meiho → Kunita Family Moss Phlox or Seseragi Road → Meiho Onsen Yuseikan

The moss phlox grows on private residential land, and peak bloom and parking arrangements change from year to year. Autumn brings more traffic; winter requires preparation for ice and snow.

Days headed to Meiho Kogen, Meiho Ski Resort or Meiho Onsen

Stock up before camping, skiing or visiting the hot spring

Meiho Meat is useful for fresh meat and barbecue supplies, the fresh market for vegetables, and the product hall for Meiho processed foods. Buy ingredients before a hot spring or camping trip, then add souvenirs on the way back.

Meiho Meat → fresh market → product hall → Meiho Kogen or Meiho Onsen

Plan cooling and packing for meat and processed foods in summer and items carried home in winter. Hot spring and nearby facility hours may differ during ski season.

Days when you want a shorter outdoor walk; adults interested in local life

On a rainy day, shop, eat and visit the museum

If rain shortens your Yoshida River walk, focus on the product hall and Kissa Meiho, then drive a few minutes to the Meiho Museum of History and Folklore to learn about local life. The stop gives more context to Meiho than a quick purchase of ham or keichan alone.

Product hall → Kissa Meiho → Meiho Museum of History and Folklore → hot spring

The museum opens on limited days, with different arrangements on winter weekdays. Keep outdoor transfers short in the rain.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★★☆

Suitable for nursing, diaper changing and a short break.

The nursing room in the south toilet building, outdoor toilets and product hall are useful. Keep a park outing short with a carrier or stroller; check water levels and footing near the river.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Can enjoy a short park walk but needs close supervision at the water's edge.

Surusumi no Sato Park offers a change of scene while waiting for food. Takeaway or rice balls make it easier to adapt when the wait for seats is long.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The Surusumi statue, park, river views and snacks offer variety.

See the statue of the celebrated horse Surusumi, then walk down into the park for a short outing with a purpose. In summer, children may want to play by the river, so check water levels and prepare a change of clothes.

Primary-school children
★★★★★

Easy to extend a food, history and nature stop with a hot spring or skiing.

Try Meiho Ham and keichan, then visit the museum or Seseragi Road, or Meiho Ski Resort in winter, to turn a rest stop into an introduction to the area.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Meiho Summer Festival

The official announcement scheduled the 2026 festival for July 25, with a beer garden, fair stalls, drumming, participatory games and Gujo Odori dancing. An event visit affects parking and the length of your stay differently from an ordinary lunch stop.

Surusumi Birthday Festival and local events

Events linked to the celebrated horse Surusumi and other Meiho gatherings are updated through station and tourism association notices. They offer a way into local history beyond the statue.

Spring flower visits

The Kunita Family Moss Phlox generally peaks around mid-April, although flowering has come earlier in some recent years. As it is on private residential land, check bloom updates, parking and visitor etiquette before going.

Seseragi Road fresh greenery and autumn foliage

The road is known for early-summer greenery and autumn colours around late October to early November. Traffic increases in popular periods, and winter brings ice and snow, so check road information and dress for the conditions.

Meiho Kogen and ski resort seasons

Winter brings skiing at Meiho Ski Resort; the green season brings camping and barbecues. The station is useful for ingredients, snacks, toilets and shopping before or after a hot spring visit.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

On holiday lunchtimes, several food options help

Visitor accounts suggest that parking and eateries tend to get busy on holidays and in autumn foliage season. Aim for Kissa Meiho, but be ready to switch to a Meiho frankfurter, rice balls, gohei mochi or soba.

Meiho Ham is for eating here as well as taking home

Alongside the product hall selection, try Meiho Meat's frankfurters or ham fry, or Kissa Meiho's ham cutlet or ham steak. If buying chilled goods, plan for an insulated bag before you arrive.

Walking down to the Yoshida River offers breathing room even at a busy station

Visitor accounts often remember the riverbank and park as well as the shopping. A short outdoor walk, even on a busy day, suits a break from long-distance driving or helps children reset.

In spring and autumn, plan around the whole road as well as the station

The Kunita Family Moss Phlox, Zenbei cherry tree and Seseragi Road autumn colours make Meiho a seasonal destination. Use the station as a base for food, toilets and shopping so you can adjust your route when flower or foliage sites are crowded.

With children, consider both the facilities and the river

The nursing room, diaper changing facilities and outdoor toilets are reassuring, and the park is close; at the river, supervise children according to water level and footing. Walk while waiting for food, or focus on indoor stops on rainy days.

Winter still offers a useful break, with road and business hours to check

The product hall, cafe, toilets and routes to the hot spring and ski resort remain useful in winter. Ice and snow affect the Seseragi Road, and the hot spring and ski resort can have seasonal or special hours; check current road and facility notices before travelling.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Bring an insulated bag and ice packs when buying Meiho Ham, meat or other chilled goods; it makes the return journey easier.
  • For lunch, keep several options in mind, such as Kissa Meiho, Meiho Meat, Onisuke, Kuromugi, Genki and Saki, so you can adjust to crowds.
  • Surusumi no Sato Park is a short walk away, but avoid pushing on to the riverbank after rain or when water levels rise.
  • Peak moss phlox in spring and autumn foliage vary each year. Check Meiho Tourism Association bloom and foliage updates before setting expectations.
  • The Seseragi Road can have ice and snow in winter. Check winter tyres, allow extra time and consult the hot spring and ski resort's operating notices.
  • Event visits take longer than an ordinary rest stop. Plan parking, toilets, food and the time needed for the return journey.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Main choice for lunch

Kissa Meiho keichan set meal / Meiho Ham cutlet / Meiho Ham steak / Meiho game meat

Kissa Meiho suits a sit-down meal or a family with different tastes. It lists 50 seats, barrier-free access, Wi-Fi and some takeaway options.

There can be waits at lunchtime and during autumn foliage season, so consider snack tenants too.

A light bite outdoors

Meiho frankfurter / Meiho Ham fry / handmade croquette / gohei mochi (grilled rice cake with sauce) / mitarashi (sweet soy-glazed dumplings)

Meiho Meat and the tenants offer a taste of the area even on a short stop, when there is no time for a restaurant meal.

Popular snacks can attract queues or sell out at some times of day.

Food for the car or park

Onisuke rice balls / Meiho Bakery / local sweets / soft-serve ice cream

Pick up easy-to-carry snacks before or after walking down toward the Yoshida River. Eating outdoors can be convenient with children or dogs.

Take rubbish home or use designated bins. At the riverbank, consider wind, insects and summer heat.

Meiho foods to take home

Meiho Ham / Meiho tomato ketchup / Meiho keichan chicken / Meiho game meat / Meiho doburoku (cloudy unfiltered sake)

The product hall is a good place to shop by the Meiho name. Gift, nationwide shipping and online shop options can carry the experience to your table at home.

Bring an insulated bag and ice packs for chilled or frozen goods. Shopping bags and ice packs are listed as paid items.

Look for seasonal produce

Spring wild vegetables / summer tomatoes, cucumbers and corn / autumn new rice and root vegetables / winter Chinese cabbage and daikon / log-grown shiitake mushrooms

Shinsenichi Meiho reflects the area's water and temperature swings. It is also useful for buying vegetables before camping.

Seasonal stock varies with deliveries and weather. There may be more choice in the morning.
