Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

See first

Vegetables from local farmers and seasonal produce offer a first taste of Gujo.

For a meal
Keichan set meal or curry keichan set meal

These chicken set meals are the restaurant's main choices for a Gujo-style meal.

For something sweet
Moroheiya or blueberry soft serve

Even on a short stop, a serving offers a taste distinctive to this station. Moroheiya is a leafy vegetable.

The facilities are useful for a break on rainy days or at night.

Go farther
Kodakara Onsen Enku no Yu and Kawa no Eki 373

After a meal, you can head to the hot spring; in summer, continue for ayu sweetfish and river activities.

Chiho's detour notes

One sweet treat, one circuit of the farmers' market: even a short stop in Minami leaves a taste to remember.

Chiho Kashiwagi sees this as a place to add a taste of Gujo without interrupting the flow of a Route 156 drive for too long. Whether you have a full keichan meal or just moroheiya soft serve, a circuit of Shunsai Market lets you take something of Minami with you.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Minami, a roadside station on Route 156 at the entrance to Gujo, brings Nagara River views, the Shunsai Market, a restaurant and Gujo souvenirs together in a short stop. Chiho Kashiwagi suggests adding keichan, moroheiya soft serve or something from the farmers' market to your trip instead of stopping only for a rest. Keichan is a local chicken dish.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A quick stop for food and shopping at the entrance to Gujo

This is not a large destination for an extended stay, but the farmers' market, souvenir shop, restaurant and sweets are close together, making it easy to add one treat to a toilet break. Stop before or after heading north on Route 156 to bring a taste of Gujo into the drive.

02

Nagara River views make a rest stop memorable

The Nagara River flows beside the station, and visitor reviews mention resting here while watching the river and the Nagaragawa Railway. Even a few minutes outside with the view can make the stop memorable.

03

There are options beyond a restaurant meal

Choices range from keichan and dote udon to miso simmered udon and soft serve. On busy days or near closing, switching to the farmers' market, souvenir shop or sweets can keep your plans flexible.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive toward Gujo Hachiman

Make it a Route 156 lunch stop

From the Minami Interchange, join Route 156 and combine a toilet break, restaurant meal and souvenir shopping at the station. Choose a keichan or curry keichan set meal for a taste of Gujo, then look around Shunsai Market after eating to make the most of a short stop.

Minami Interchange → Michi-no-Eki Minami → toward Gujo Hachiman

Parking is limited in scale, so at lunchtime it is easier to choose one main purpose for your stop.

A break of 30 minutes or less

Stop briefly for sweets and shopping

If you are skipping a meal, choose moroheiya or blueberry soft serve and pick up a Gujo souvenir in the shop. Take in the Nagara River view before leaving to make it a small detour rather than just a transit stop.

Park → toilet → sweets → souvenir shop → depart

Offerings vary with the season and time of day; close to closing time, prioritize the shop.

Rainy days or days when you want to rest

Extend the stop into a half-day with a hot spring

Have lunch and shop at the station, then head to Kodakara Onsen Enku no Yu for a half-day route with a hot spring bath. The connection with Enku also makes it a good drive for adults.

Michi-no-Eki Minami → Kodakara Onsen Enku no Yu → return journey

Check the hot spring's closed days and last admission time before adding it to your plans.

A summer family drive

In summer, continue to the river and ayu

Pick up a light meal or drinks at the station before heading to Kawa no Eki 373 or another Nagara River activity. Salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, BBQ and river play can turn station shopping into part of a summer outing.

Michi-no-Eki Minami → Kawa no Eki 373 → Kodakara Onsen Enku no Yu

River activities depend greatly on water level, weather and operating days. Be ready to stay away from the water when conditions warrant it.

Days planned around flowers in bloom

Visit the flower temple in spring or early summer

Keishoji Peony Garden is an easy detour from the station when peonies or hydrangeas are in bloom. You could see the flowers first, then return for a sweet treat, rather than spend too long eating at the station.

Keishoji Peony Garden → Michi-no-Eki Minami → along the Nagara River

Flowering times and admission fees vary by season; check current information shortly before a flower-focused visit.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Useful for a short nursing, diaper-changing or toilet break.

The tourism website lists a nursing room and diaper-changing facilities. Focus on an indoor break and an easy return to the car rather than a long stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A soft serve break and a look around the shop can be just right.

The station is not a place for extended play, so avoid a long restaurant wait and leave time to continue to Kawa no Eki 373 or the hot spring.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Nagara River views, soft serve and a hot spring can keep the visit varied.

In summer you can continue to riverside activities, but judge conditions by the weather and water level. Keep the station stop short, then let children be active at the next destination.

Elementary school children
★★★★☆

Add the Japan Manmannaka Center or stories connected with Enku.

Beyond eating, shopping and seeing the river, learning about Japan's center of population or seeing exhibits about Enku can make the region more memorable.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Its modest size works best when you choose a purpose

Visitors tend to use it as a practical roadside station rather than a large destination for a long stay. Pick one main purpose—lunch, sweets, shopping or a toilet break—to make the stop satisfying.

The restaurant has local flavors and familiar choices

Keichan, curry keichan, dote udon and miso simmered udon offer regional flavors. There are also udon, soba, curry and rice bowls, making it easier for families with different preferences to choose.

Sweets can be the main event on a short stop

Moroheiya and blueberry soft serve give the stop a distinctive flavor even when you skip the restaurant. For families with children or on hot days, sweets may fit the schedule better than a meal.

The farmers' market and prepared foods work on the way home too

Shunsai Market and the souvenir shop offer local farmers' produce and prepared dishes. On your way home from Gujo, choose separately what to eat in the car and what to open at home.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • If you are visiting for the restaurant, arrive a little before the lunch rush so you can plan eating and shopping separately.
  • The souvenir shop and restaurant close earlier from November through February, so see to sweets and shopping first on a winter evening.
  • The parking lot holds about 27 standard cars. On a busy day, decide whether the restaurant, sweets or shopping matters most.
  • For riverside outings, check rainfall, water level and heat, and be willing to stay away from the water.
  • On Gujo Odori or fireworks days, allow extra travel time on Route 156 and toward Gujo Hachiman, not just at the station.
  • For order-only items such as Gottsuo bento, check how to reserve before including them in your plans.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Stop for lunch

Keichan set meal, curry keichan set meal

These make a meal break on a drive along Route 156. At busy times, leave room in your plans to switch from the restaurant to shopping and sweets.

Warm up with something light

Udon, soba, dote udon, miso simmered udon

These suit a short winter break or a day when a riverside drive has left you cold. Miso simmered udon is offered only in winter; dote udon is udon served with a rich miso-based stew.

Take a break for sweets

Moroheiya soft serve, blueberry soft serve, zenzai

These are easy choices when a full meal feels too much. For families with children, a soft serve stop may fit more easily into a short break than a restaurant meal. Zenzai is a sweet red bean dish.

Shop for the road home

Produce from Shunsai Market, Gujo souvenirs, prepared foods

Look through produce from local farmers and prepared dishes for something to open at your lodging or at home. Even a short stop can leave you with a taste of the area.

Plan around an outing

Gottsuo bento

The official information features a bento lunch box available by order. Include it in plans for the flower temple, hot spring or river activities only when you can reserve it in advance.
